Annie Lennox And Sting Explain Their Oscar Nominated Songs

Yahoo! Music, Mar 2, 2004 5:00 pm PST
Annie Lennox, who took home the Best Original Song Oscar Award for "Into the West" from The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King, said she was thrilled just to be part of the film. During a backstage interview at the Academy Awards, Lennox said that director Peter Jackson and the rest of the crew were already working on final edits when she entered the project.

"Everybody was exhausted when I first came in because it was just before the edit, and Peter had this horrendous job to cut four hours of footage down to three, and I had the privilege of watching that, " Lennox said.

Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King picked up 11 awards on Sunday (February 29) night.

Last June, Lennox released her first album in eight years, called Bare, which featured the single "Wonderful."

Sting, who was also nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar Award, performed at the 76th Annual Academy Awards ceremony with Alison Krauss. Sting and Krauss sang "You Will Be My Ain True Love" as a duet, though Krauss sings the song solo on the Cold Mountain soundtrack.

Sting told LAUNCH that he never regretted not singing the song in the movie himself: "I wrote it for the female character," Sting said. "In other words, it's the sort of unspoken song that brings the Inman character back from hell, back to her, and so it was always a woman's song. Alison did a beautiful job on it--very plaintive and haunting."

Sting kicks off a four-show stand Tuesday (March 2) at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.
