The 2009 ACM Awards--Winners

Posted Sun Apr 5, 2009 9:02pm PDT by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

Check out the fashion hits and misses of the night here.

Aaaaand we're back for another country-soaked weekend in Sin City, folks. Las Vegas has the annual distinction of hosting the Academy of Country Music Awards for quite a few years running--a more peanut-butter-and-jelly combo than one might think. The best aspect of the country genre is its ability to be simulaneously down-to-earth yet covered in stardust, and what city does that better than you-know-where? Besides, well, Nashville of course.

To that end, here's our annual "who won vs. who shoulda won" rundown. Quick aside: Wherefore art thou, Tim McGraw? But anyway, let's get on with the nuts and bolts.

ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR:
Carrie Underwood deserved the win, if only for the massive secrecy surrounding her dress and all that. (Just kidding. She always looks great, no matter what she wears, so who cares?) No, really--in all seriousness, it's kind of nice to see someone break Kenny Chesney's winning streak, and a gal at that. Underwood's ability to cross-pollinate the pop genre on a real, adult level is refreshing, and deserving of an epic award.

TOP MALE VOCALIST:
The usual suspects. Kenny again (mildly low-pro in the past 12 months), George Strait doing his best thing (i.e., keeping on keeping on), Toby Keith god lovin' her. Keith Urban pulled a fair advantage this year, what with his high-profile dad status of one of the cuter babies of last year, plus excellent buildup to his new 2009 record. In the end, however, Brad Paisley and his smoking guitar work took the award.

TOP FEMALE VOCALIST:
All about the Carrie this year, despite formidable opposition by the other crossover chickie (Taylor Swift), Ms. Saucy (Miranda Lambert), breakout hitmaker Heidi Newfield, and critical pick Lee Ann Womack. My gosh--I just realized all these women are very, very blond. What does this mean, subliminally? Anyway, a fair win for Carrie, as she's reaching the largest mature audience out there.

TOP VOCAL GROUP:
It's not really fair to pit anyone against Rascal Flatts--even if we are talking upstart talents such as Lady Antebellum and the Lost Trailers, who have been marinating in buzz long and hard enough to have lost feeling in their toes at this point. Or Little Big Town, ditto, not quite as on the crescendo. However, the Flatts are one of those acts that really should be in Entertainer of the Year status and keep getting bumped into group category wins--for about ten zillion wins straight. Which makes it a little hard on those who compete against them. But, as it were. (BTW--Jay DeMarcus: "Now I know how Brooks & Dunn feel"--ha ha ha ha! LOL! That was good.)

TOP VOCAL DUO:
Sugarland can't quit. Of late, they're not only scaring the likes of Montgomery Gentry, they've been knocking down the formidable Brooks & Dunn door. Sure would be nice to see our fave raunchy pals Big & Rich win (Taxman! John Rich! Yeah!), and it's fun to see "Cheater, Cheater" Joey + Rory nominated as well. But hey, can't deny that Jennifer Nettles continues to be skinny, sexy, and damn good video/audio.

TOP NEW ARTIST:
Zac Brown Band put up a hell of a fight. Dang, "Chicken Fried" really held on there for months, didn't it? And Jake Owen made some impressive chart moves as well. However, I can anecdotally record that my 11-year-old niece and her friends have a "We Heart Julianne" club in which they collect every scrap of evidence that Ms. Hough lives and breathes. Plus, she's a good time. Sunshine, good looks, dancing with the stars--a very nice package indeed. No hard feelings on this win whatsoever.

TOP NEW MALE ARTIST
Jake Owen took this one, which is a bit of a surprise given the Grammy attention paid toward Jamey Johnson. Well, good for Jake. He's been deserving of this sort of attention for a couple years now.

TOP NEW FEMALE ARTIST
Julianne Hough again, but she wasn't up against formidable competition. No offense, Ashton Shepard and Sarah Buxton. There just wasn't a chance.

TOP NEW VOCAL GROUP
Eli Young Band and the Lost Trailers both were nice and buzzy, but again--not really formidable competition in the face of the brute damn force of Ze Zac Brown Band. Not much to comment on except, "Easy win."

SINGLE OF THE YEAR
Okay, now we can get back to comparing some close calls. Jamey Johnson was the star Grammy nom boy and all that, and "In Color" is a great tune. Competing against stalwarts Brad Paisley and Trace Adkins is some tough row to hoe, though. Not sure if Miranda Lambert and HeidI Newfield are up to the plate in this category although both singles did smoke and steam. If pressed, we would have guessed Brad would have taken the honor, but it was nice to be surprised and have Trace pull through.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Taylor Swift. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah. It was. Just shut up and admit it.

SONG OF THE YEAR
Jamey Johnson. He had to win something--all that hype couldn't be for nothing, right? Nah, just jesting--good tune. Interesting that this category was almost identical to single of the year, no?

VIDEO OF THE YEAR
We had some decent contenders here, with the best probably being Carrie or Taylor running around in fancy dresses looking aching and longing. In the end, though, can you really beat a cute as hell video featuring ANDY GRIFFITH? It would be like beating...America. Good win, Brad. Good work.

VOCAL EVENT OF THE YEAR
Aw. Come on. Brad Paisley plus Keith Urban? You might as well just hang it up and go home.

Until next year, podners. Or, well, until later this year anyway, when we recap the CMA awards. Stay Country!

I thought Carrie should had won Video of the Year. Congrats to every winner!

22. Nicole -
Carrie does not deserve to be entertainer of the year. She needs to pay her dues in country music first. Winning american Idol does not count. You have to work your way from the bottom and loss a few recording contracts before you deserve the big prize, I demand a recount.

23. __A_YAHOO_USER__ -
Ah the Country awards...Oh, no wait, the pop-country awards. Wait...the HOOK Pseado-Country Awards is more like it.

24. James A -
I get sick of seeing little girls who sing about their psychotic tendencies. I guess to everyone that is good music. But if a male sings about it, look out! he is a stalker, a psycho, a creep. Get real. It is a double standard. The future of country music is going to be real lame. Especially when George Strait, Toby Keith, and Brad Paisley hang it up

25. Wendell L -
Must agree the real country seems to be fading away, some of the new acts are ok, but the Gary stewarts and George Jones and waylon Jennings who made country, are either passed on or forgotten, oh and if kenny chesney can sell out 14 football fields, Well MR Stright can sell out that many a day

26. Redneck in Tx. -
The farce that is the ACM,s wouldn,t know a country song if it bit em' in the ass. Not a single winner of any of the major categories have ever even lived a country song. You got more real country talent right here in Ft. Worth Texas than the whole damn state of Tennesee. Come on folks let,s put the "o" back in country and make it real again. No more NashVegas!!!!!
"I would rather be a fencepost in Texas, than the King of Tennesee"

27. Joe -
Congratulations to Brad Paisley and his 3 wins (more than anybody). He should have won EOTY. Oh well. Carrie should have to give back the award because of that monstrosity she wore.

28. james m -
Horay for Sugarland. Too band one of my favorates Miranda Lambert didn't win but Carrie did deserve it. And why the hell is Miley there anyway, she is not country no matter what the evil empire (Disney) try to sell her off as.

29. houston -
THAT'S RIGHT!!! COUNTRY IS GOING DOWN HILL FAST! I USE TO LISTEN TO NASHVILLE COUNTRY BUT NOW I NEVER TURN ON MY RADIO AT ALL, TEXAS COUNTRY IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO THOSE GUYS WRITE ABOUT WHAT THEY LIVE AND WHAT THEY LOVE! EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET IT TOGETHER AND PLAY TEXAS COUNTRY ALL THE TIME! NO MORE KENNY, KICK HIM OUT AND PLAY SOME RANDY ROGERS, OR JASON BOLLAND, OR RECKLESS KELLY, OR WADE BOWEN! ANYTHING BUT NASHSVILLE COUNTRY!

What did Carrie do to deserve EOY? Oh, wait, that's right, she openned for Keith Urban - she didn't even headline her own tour. Again, what a joke, she should be embarassed. I am loosing faith in the ability of these shows to truly award talent.

31. robert -
congrats to winner

32. patrice -
I think the awawrds were pretty lame.I think the cma's are much better. I dont understand why miley cyrus was singing.Hosting a award show with her dad is one thing but there are plenty of people who could have performed. Also i am a carrie fan but are you kidding me entertainer that should be based on your concert sales and attendance. What little she has headlined hasnt compared to selling stadiums out.Sorry but if they didnt want kenny to win then should have let keith win b/c he was probably 2 in concert sales.Thank you god for once again keeping that no talent waste toby from winning anything. He cant sing and surely cant act. Oklahoma needs to hire him as there trash man b/c thats all he is good for!!!!!!

33. bluejeangirl -
Julianne needs to stick to dancing.....she can never be better than Alison kraus and CArrie underwwod..

just some pop idol

No wonder I do not like country music...who wants to hear a song about TICKS..ewwww silly and stupid...
no heart in these songs..

34. Yahoo! Music User -
i dont mind the young in country its chaging is it for the better maybe not but it still has its roots unlike rock and pop everyone sounds the same country has so many different ppl its one of the most listened to genre's for a reason oh and way to go taylor

35. Fabricio -
I would love for all of the music labels to stop making their little comments on how great all the blonde singers are! Guess what, Julianne Hough, Carrie Underwood, Heidi Newfield (Insert Blonde Singer Here) are all the same, I call them Twinkies, they are mass produced and full of sh&^. When did country become so lame? Now we are going to have to listen to Miley Cyrus on country radio? Not me I tell you. I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK! I WANT PEOPLE TO STOP CONSIDERING CARRIE UNDERWOOD AS COUNTRY! I WANT SUPREMELY TALENTED AND HARD-WORKING BANDS LIKE THE ZAC BROWN BAND TO WIN A FREAKING AWARD! Thank you ACM for teaching me that real country is gone!!!

36. Dan -
Amen, I appreciate the support of those that agreed with me about Country Music and how it is dying fast. Being a native Houstonian, I was raised on Ernest Tubb and my hero, Gene Watson. Today's country is going to be tomorrow's dream because the youth of today are being exposed to the commercialization of what is called "country music". True - true country reflects on life and times and is sang with feelings with country instruments to support it. Listen to ole Hank to get that true soul of country music. By the way, being from Texas, music folks from Tennessee need to pay more visits to the great state of Texas because they would be surprised how much true country music is being played on radio and country bars. If you're going to sing country, live it before you sing about it.

Glad to see some negative comments about Taylor Swift. While she is
a very beautiful young lady, she can't sing and it shows when you see
her singing live on these awards shows. I would guess that they do the
same thing at her concerts as they do for Brittany. Yes, the good old
prerecorded songs that she gets to pretend to sing. The only reason she
won album of the year was sales. It was probably the biggest selliing country
cd for the voting period. Why it was is a mystery.
The other big disappointment last night was Underwood's win. I'm so tired
of seeing this conceited, egotistical snob winning. I can't wait until her
first loss and seeing her have a hissy fit.

38. jerseygirl -
I have to defend Brad Paisley winning. Someone said they're sick of the
same people winning. This is only Brad's second win. That's no where near
the records of Brooks & Dunn, the Judds, Reba & others.

39. Mike -
Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift have ruined country music. Im sure people like Waylon Jones and Hank are damn ashamed of this "new" country. Ill take people like Jamey Johnson Shooter Jennings and Hank 3 that write real country music. As Shooter said a few years ago Lets put the O back in [profane]ry.

40. Mamabluebell -
I agree that country is going more country rock. I love George Strait. I wish he could have won. I like Carrie but she should have to pay her dues and not get to the top that quick.

Terrorist attack feared after Jackson arrest

AP
Tue Dec 22, 2009 4:57pm PST

AP - Police concerns that media-hungry terrorists would attack Michael Jackson's trial as a "soft target" led to a request for federal help, according to FBI files kept on the late pop star. The documents also … More »
