The 2009 ACM Awards--Winners

Posted Sun Apr 5, 2009 9:02pm PDT by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

Check out the fashion hits and misses of the night here.

Aaaaand we're back for another country-soaked weekend in Sin City, folks. Las Vegas has the annual distinction of hosting the Academy of Country Music Awards for quite a few years running--a more peanut-butter-and-jelly combo than one might think. The best aspect of the country genre is its ability to be simulaneously down-to-earth yet covered in stardust, and what city does that better than you-know-where? Besides, well, Nashville of course.

To that end, here's our annual "who won vs. who shoulda won" rundown. Quick aside: Wherefore art thou, Tim McGraw? But anyway, let's get on with the nuts and bolts.

ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR:
Carrie Underwood deserved the win, if only for the massive secrecy surrounding her dress and all that. (Just kidding. She always looks great, no matter what she wears, so who cares?) No, really--in all seriousness, it's kind of nice to see someone break Kenny Chesney's winning streak, and a gal at that. Underwood's ability to cross-pollinate the pop genre on a real, adult level is refreshing, and deserving of an epic award.

TOP MALE VOCALIST:
The usual suspects. Kenny again (mildly low-pro in the past 12 months), George Strait doing his best thing (i.e., keeping on keeping on), Toby Keith god lovin' her. Keith Urban pulled a fair advantage this year, what with his high-profile dad status of one of the cuter babies of last year, plus excellent buildup to his new 2009 record. In the end, however, Brad Paisley and his smoking guitar work took the award.

TOP FEMALE VOCALIST:
All about the Carrie this year, despite formidable opposition by the other crossover chickie (Taylor Swift), Ms. Saucy (Miranda Lambert), breakout hitmaker Heidi Newfield, and critical pick Lee Ann Womack. My gosh--I just realized all these women are very, very blond. What does this mean, subliminally? Anyway, a fair win for Carrie, as she's reaching the largest mature audience out there.

TOP VOCAL GROUP:
It's not really fair to pit anyone against Rascal Flatts--even if we are talking upstart talents such as Lady Antebellum and the Lost Trailers, who have been marinating in buzz long and hard enough to have lost feeling in their toes at this point. Or Little Big Town, ditto, not quite as on the crescendo. However, the Flatts are one of those acts that really should be in Entertainer of the Year status and keep getting bumped into group category wins--for about ten zillion wins straight. Which makes it a little hard on those who compete against them. But, as it were. (BTW--Jay DeMarcus: "Now I know how Brooks & Dunn feel"--ha ha ha ha! LOL! That was good.)

TOP VOCAL DUO:
Sugarland can't quit. Of late, they're not only scaring the likes of Montgomery Gentry, they've been knocking down the formidable Brooks & Dunn door. Sure would be nice to see our fave raunchy pals Big & Rich win (Taxman! John Rich! Yeah!), and it's fun to see "Cheater, Cheater" Joey + Rory nominated as well. But hey, can't deny that Jennifer Nettles continues to be skinny, sexy, and damn good video/audio.

TOP NEW ARTIST:
Zac Brown Band put up a hell of a fight. Dang, "Chicken Fried" really held on there for months, didn't it? And Jake Owen made some impressive chart moves as well. However, I can anecdotally record that my 11-year-old niece and her friends have a "We Heart Julianne" club in which they collect every scrap of evidence that Ms. Hough lives and breathes. Plus, she's a good time. Sunshine, good looks, dancing with the stars--a very nice package indeed. No hard feelings on this win whatsoever.

TOP NEW MALE ARTIST
Jake Owen took this one, which is a bit of a surprise given the Grammy attention paid toward Jamey Johnson. Well, good for Jake. He's been deserving of this sort of attention for a couple years now.

TOP NEW FEMALE ARTIST
Julianne Hough again, but she wasn't up against formidable competition. No offense, Ashton Shepard and Sarah Buxton. There just wasn't a chance.

TOP NEW VOCAL GROUP
Eli Young Band and the Lost Trailers both were nice and buzzy, but again--not really formidable competition in the face of the brute damn force of Ze Zac Brown Band. Not much to comment on except, "Easy win."

SINGLE OF THE YEAR
Okay, now we can get back to comparing some close calls. Jamey Johnson was the star Grammy nom boy and all that, and "In Color" is a great tune. Competing against stalwarts Brad Paisley and Trace Adkins is some tough row to hoe, though. Not sure if Miranda Lambert and HeidI Newfield are up to the plate in this category although both singles did smoke and steam. If pressed, we would have guessed Brad would have taken the honor, but it was nice to be surprised and have Trace pull through.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Taylor Swift. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah. It was. Just shut up and admit it.

SONG OF THE YEAR
Jamey Johnson. He had to win something--all that hype couldn't be for nothing, right? Nah, just jesting--good tune. Interesting that this category was almost identical to single of the year, no?

VIDEO OF THE YEAR
We had some decent contenders here, with the best probably being Carrie or Taylor running around in fancy dresses looking aching and longing. In the end, though, can you really beat a cute as hell video featuring ANDY GRIFFITH? It would be like beating...America. Good win, Brad. Good work.

VOCAL EVENT OF THE YEAR
Aw. Come on. Brad Paisley plus Keith Urban? You might as well just hang it up and go home.

Until next year, podners. Or, well, until later this year anyway, when we recap the CMA awards. Stay Country!

Country Music is no more. All the REAL singers dont get the attention they deserve. Once Toby, Alan, Randy, Trace ect r forgotten country will be no more. It is getting old listening to Underwood, Swift ec they okay but they r not ' Real Country" Give the awards to who they r do like Toby ect

42. houston -
I can sum up all of this with a few words, Waylon Jennings, Hank Sr, Willie Nelson, Haggard, Jones, Strait, Bring that kind of music back!! like the guys in Texas are doing! live it, write it, sing it!!

43. Susan -

I would truly love to know how country stalwarts like George Strait, Reba,
Loretta Lynn, Alabama & others who paid their dues feel about these
much less talented singers like Carrie & Taylor win awards they didn't
earn. Though I like Sugarland, even they still haven't paid their dues yet
but they are light years better then the two ladies.
The only ones that really deserved winning last night were Brad Paisley,
Rascal Flatts, Jamey Johnson & Trace Atkins. That's not including the new
artists.

I want to start a foundation for the preservation of country music. Maybe we could choke out the influence of Nashville that is destroying the genre I love. Billy Ray Cyrus would not be invited either... He is a joke, how could one man stoop so low as to turning his daughters success into a medium for plugging his own career. He was a joke to begin with.

48. Courtney -
"Trashville" country is a joke. eli young, along with just about any other texas or red dirt country band, is easily 100 times better than zac brown. you talk about country music dying?? tune in to 949theoutlaw.com or 959theranch.com and tell me what you think then. country music isn't dying....it's moving to texas.

49. megan h -
i think that rascal flatts should have been for entainer of the year

50. LTH -
I have been lucky enough to see Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, and Carrie Underwood in concert! I honestly cannot rate them against one another, all being unique and amazing. However, in my heart of hearts? No one tops Brad Paisley for his down to earth persona, and unbelievable guitar skills. He deserved to win in all categories!!!

51. TomI -
LTH - you need to see a Kenny show.......

UGH, I hate when people glorify the crossover stuff into pop. Country is country and not pop. It has been given its own genre for a reason and an artist that straddles the fence does not deserve the country honors. So, please respect a man that is nearing three decades of doing such a thing and keeping country, country. Thank heaven for George Strait who should receive more honors.

Anyone age 40-60 can without doubt clearly see the massive changes that have come about in the country music industry.
When they began to walk the level of video stepped into a whole new ballgame.
When numbers of them married "celebrities" this placed them personally in a different level of life - therefore can no longer relate to the true blue issues of normalcy.
Many "winners" have ridden on the coattails of their spouses or vice versa to vamp or revamp own status.....miley used her dad and then he used her....carrie, juliann, kelly used other programs to feather their caps.
In truth, most did not come thru any level of true country to be where are at this time.
But for whatever reason, were given the career break - too bad most never really realize how much have been blessed with....instead go to their heads, hence faith, tim, miley etc and seem to become something claimed were totally against.
The attire at the awards alone is enough to make you want to walk away from any support - terry from sugarland with fear that would flash to the world during thank yous, miley and wanna be rocker look and actions, so many of these young women who are barely out of puberty dressing like 50 year olds....where are their parents for pete's sake?!
Anyway, from the looks of things really takes no talent - just connection....and a video or friend inviting you to theirs.
You guys could change the world for the better - give it a try by starting with thanks to the One who gave you a gift and then using it with purpose!!

Toby Keith, wow 1st year back to a award show and he gets an award. I mean ya he has got other awards but he wasnt there becasue of the Dixie Chicks the little thing they did to toby. Toby is the bomb.

55. Maureen -
OMG. I love Trace and he is country and he won! Woo Hoo! He was humble and funny and I was glad to see him finally get some recognition for his work. Did you see the audience at the end of his song? Not a dry eye in the house! He has the sexiest voice and the grit of his songs too! He is funny and tender in his music. Sorry, I like him and was happy for his winning!

56. Tigger -
Luke the Drifter, the Possum and the Hag are the gods of country music while King George, and Alan Jackson are the ledgends keeping the torch lit. These country pop artist like McGraw remind me of Kenny Rogers and others who were more main stream in the 1980's. They may have sold more at that time but will never ever attain ledgendary status.

As for the women give me patsy cline, Loretta Lynne or Tanya Tucker any day over Shanya Twain or Faith Hill.

I will say my son had me listen to Melissa Lamberts first ablum and it was pretty good and Underwood's "before He Cheats"sounded like something Cline or Tucker might have done.

Iam so greatful for the "classic country" station in Little Rock since it is the only way Jones or Cash is ever played.

57. MR. CHAMP TO YOU -
Does anyone know who won song writer of the year??

58. Seraph -
Taylor Swift won album of the year? Come on.

59. Raymond K -
In my ever so humble opinion, it's all about marketing and record sales. I watched the first season of "Gone Country" with John rich. He chose Enrique Iglesias (I think that was his name) as the winner because of how the girls responded to him while he was singing. Rich said that he would seell alot of records because of his stage appearance. both music and acting have gotten away from "talent". It's all about how the production companies can make as much money as possible.. Granted, business is about making money. But, if you're going to award somebody for talent - Let there be talent! I had to mute Mile C. because the nasally pop voice just didn't work for me. I think Taylor is a darling little girl, but the "White Horse" video where she's "crying" at the end...I'm sorry, but experience some life before trying to sell me the "broken heart" feelings. I think folks took notice about the reaction to Jennifer Nettles' "Stay". There was some true life emotion. thanks for putting up with my dribble... Ray

60. MARY -
I enjoyed most of the awards, except I wish Taylor would quit swinging her hair around like a little two year old girl. Grow up. Leave Billy Ray at home. George Strait was as good as ever. Keep up the good work.

Underwood aims for family fun with variety show

AP
Sat Dec 5, 2009 2:43pm PST

AP - The variety show was once a television staple, and Carrie Underwood thinks it might be time for a resurgence. The country music star hosts Monday's "An All-Star Holiday Special" on Fox, and believes it's… More »
