The 2009 ACM Awards--Winners

Posted Sun Apr 5, 2009 9:02pm PDT by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

Check out the fashion hits and misses of the night here.

Aaaaand we're back for another country-soaked weekend in Sin City, folks. Las Vegas has the annual distinction of hosting the Academy of Country Music Awards for quite a few years running--a more peanut-butter-and-jelly combo than one might think. The best aspect of the country genre is its ability to be simulaneously down-to-earth yet covered in stardust, and what city does that better than you-know-where? Besides, well, Nashville of course.

To that end, here's our annual "who won vs. who shoulda won" rundown. Quick aside: Wherefore art thou, Tim McGraw? But anyway, let's get on with the nuts and bolts.

ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR:
Carrie Underwood deserved the win, if only for the massive secrecy surrounding her dress and all that. (Just kidding. She always looks great, no matter what she wears, so who cares?) No, really--in all seriousness, it's kind of nice to see someone break Kenny Chesney's winning streak, and a gal at that. Underwood's ability to cross-pollinate the pop genre on a real, adult level is refreshing, and deserving of an epic award.

TOP MALE VOCALIST:
The usual suspects. Kenny again (mildly low-pro in the past 12 months), George Strait doing his best thing (i.e., keeping on keeping on), Toby Keith god lovin' her. Keith Urban pulled a fair advantage this year, what with his high-profile dad status of one of the cuter babies of last year, plus excellent buildup to his new 2009 record. In the end, however, Brad Paisley and his smoking guitar work took the award.

TOP FEMALE VOCALIST:
All about the Carrie this year, despite formidable opposition by the other crossover chickie (Taylor Swift), Ms. Saucy (Miranda Lambert), breakout hitmaker Heidi Newfield, and critical pick Lee Ann Womack. My gosh--I just realized all these women are very, very blond. What does this mean, subliminally? Anyway, a fair win for Carrie, as she's reaching the largest mature audience out there.

TOP VOCAL GROUP:
It's not really fair to pit anyone against Rascal Flatts--even if we are talking upstart talents such as Lady Antebellum and the Lost Trailers, who have been marinating in buzz long and hard enough to have lost feeling in their toes at this point. Or Little Big Town, ditto, not quite as on the crescendo. However, the Flatts are one of those acts that really should be in Entertainer of the Year status and keep getting bumped into group category wins--for about ten zillion wins straight. Which makes it a little hard on those who compete against them. But, as it were. (BTW--Jay DeMarcus: "Now I know how Brooks & Dunn feel"--ha ha ha ha! LOL! That was good.)

TOP VOCAL DUO:
Sugarland can't quit. Of late, they're not only scaring the likes of Montgomery Gentry, they've been knocking down the formidable Brooks & Dunn door. Sure would be nice to see our fave raunchy pals Big & Rich win (Taxman! John Rich! Yeah!), and it's fun to see "Cheater, Cheater" Joey + Rory nominated as well. But hey, can't deny that Jennifer Nettles continues to be skinny, sexy, and damn good video/audio.

TOP NEW ARTIST:
Zac Brown Band put up a hell of a fight. Dang, "Chicken Fried" really held on there for months, didn't it? And Jake Owen made some impressive chart moves as well. However, I can anecdotally record that my 11-year-old niece and her friends have a "We Heart Julianne" club in which they collect every scrap of evidence that Ms. Hough lives and breathes. Plus, she's a good time. Sunshine, good looks, dancing with the stars--a very nice package indeed. No hard feelings on this win whatsoever.

TOP NEW MALE ARTIST
Jake Owen took this one, which is a bit of a surprise given the Grammy attention paid toward Jamey Johnson. Well, good for Jake. He's been deserving of this sort of attention for a couple years now.

TOP NEW FEMALE ARTIST
Julianne Hough again, but she wasn't up against formidable competition. No offense, Ashton Shepard and Sarah Buxton. There just wasn't a chance.

TOP NEW VOCAL GROUP
Eli Young Band and the Lost Trailers both were nice and buzzy, but again--not really formidable competition in the face of the brute damn force of Ze Zac Brown Band. Not much to comment on except, "Easy win."

SINGLE OF THE YEAR
Okay, now we can get back to comparing some close calls. Jamey Johnson was the star Grammy nom boy and all that, and "In Color" is a great tune. Competing against stalwarts Brad Paisley and Trace Adkins is some tough row to hoe, though. Not sure if Miranda Lambert and HeidI Newfield are up to the plate in this category although both singles did smoke and steam. If pressed, we would have guessed Brad would have taken the honor, but it was nice to be surprised and have Trace pull through.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Taylor Swift. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah. It was. Just shut up and admit it.

SONG OF THE YEAR
Jamey Johnson. He had to win something--all that hype couldn't be for nothing, right? Nah, just jesting--good tune. Interesting that this category was almost identical to single of the year, no?

VIDEO OF THE YEAR
We had some decent contenders here, with the best probably being Carrie or Taylor running around in fancy dresses looking aching and longing. In the end, though, can you really beat a cute as hell video featuring ANDY GRIFFITH? It would be like beating...America. Good win, Brad. Good work.

VOCAL EVENT OF THE YEAR
Aw. Come on. Brad Paisley plus Keith Urban? You might as well just hang it up and go home.

Until next year, podners. Or, well, until later this year anyway, when we recap the CMA awards. Stay Country!

why dont we see people like tim mcgraw, randy howser, george jones, toby keith, and the real country music singers, i dont care for taylor swift, she seems as if she is downing the male population. i also like jeff bates, jason michael carroll, and alan jackson. george strait is by far one of best singers out there.

I love Carrie and I'm truly enjoying Julianne. Carrie so deserved the awards last night. I am getting tired of Taylor. She was good at first and she does have some good songs but I agree with Yahoo Music Lover. All she writes about are her boyfriend problems and for someone that is only 19 - she sure has had a lot. Makes you wonder what she does in her spare time. Also, did you see her when she first arrived at the awards ceremony - she was dressed like she was in her late 20's. If she doesn't come out with a song about something other then her latest break-up - I think she's not going to last.

Like Tigger, I am an "old school" country music fan. Raised on the likes of Alabama, Oakridge Boys, and my favorite..the undisputed KING of country, George Strait. I have seen that man in concert so many times, and he does the same thing each time. Stands in place,Plays his guitar, and sings some of the best songs country has to offer. He is the man that all these wannabe country pop singers should take a few notes from.

64. R8R FAN -
HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!! WHAT CRAP!!!!! WHAT WAS THIS MTV MUSIC AWARDS??? TAYLOR SWIFT, ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? CARRIE UNDERWOOD IS GOOD FOR ONE THING, OPEN UP WIDE!!!!!!

65. Rachel -
The people on here obviously don't know what true country music is. If you believe that Carrie Underwood really deserves that award then you don't know real country. I agree with the people that say her career is a joke! I will give her some credit, she has a very beautiful voice. But entertaining? NO! The only reason you people like her is because she was on American Idol. She is completely overrated, and of course the people that are saying "no she isn't" is because you people believe this is country music. GARTH BROOKS GET OUT OF RETIREMENT BEFORE COUNTRY MUSIC ITSELF IS GONE AND TURNED TO POP!

Ok Lexxilu, you know the only opinion in that house that counts is Elsies!!

67. williamonmagnolia -
Carrie Underwood is a class act, all the way - great voice, smart, mature beyond her years, and will be around for a looooong time. Not sure about all the other young artists, though - feels a little teenybopperish to me.

68. Tigger -
I agree nightkap25

although jones and waylon are my favorites Strait will be the undisputed greatest counrty singer of all time in 50 years, passing even hank williams (sr.).

69. adambomber -
The American Country Music Awards? If you consider Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, Rascall Flatts, and all these wannabes country, you clearly have a mental disorder. Brad Paisley & Trace Adkins are true country music singers. It was good to see them win last night.

GARTH BROOKS GET OUT OF RETIREMENT BEFORE COUNTRY MUSIC ITSELF IS GONE AND TURNED TO POP!

Garth brooks is part of the reason we have these pop stars. I went to OSU shortly after he did and I like some of his stuff and he was a great showman/entertainer but he is not fit to carry either george's (Jones or Strait) jock strap, let alone be mentioned as an "old school 'counrty singer.

Favortie moments last night included George Straight's amazing performance - should have won Album of the Year, Toby Keith and Brad Paisley - those were really terrific country performances. Carrie Underwood was as usual right on the mark - classy, timeless and beautiful.Lee Ann Womack was superb. Taylor Swift seems like a nice kid, but she can't sing!

72. Yahoo! Music User -
Excuse me. how old are you guys? Frankly I love all of them, including the old-timer Reba and the new-comer Carrie. And what is amazing is Reba loves Carrie too!! Of course the "new" country doesn't compare with the "old" country, but that doesn't mean "old" country quits! They are all VERY talented, including Taylor. By the way, I love how she handles her emotions(that we all have) rather than the way teens around the U.S. have, whats the teen pregnancy rate again? Anyway, I do agree that we definitely need to seperate the two genres. But if we had an OUNCE of the talent and BEAUTY of these two girls would we really be on our computers hating on them? Get real. I think a little green bug might be biting your butt.

73. Lyssa -
I think Carrie Underwood won this award and Kellie Pickler presented Entertainment Of The Year, but, Jessica Simpson, Bon Jovi, Sheryl Crow, The Eagles and Jewel did not attend the awards last night because they are on tour in either Europe or whatever or maybe they are in the studio working on their new pop albums and some rock albums.

74. williamonmagnolia -
Entertainer of the Year should have gone to Brad Paisley. He wroked tirelessly this year and has created some amazing music these last couple of years. I like Ms. Underwood, but that award should have been a few years down the line for her.

75. Eric -
First off....while country isn't what it was a few years ago, there are still some great artists. Dierks Bentley and Miranda Lambert are throw-backs. Talents like Ashton Shepherd, Eric Church, Chris Knight, Brad Paisley, Craig Morgan, James Otto, Heather Myles, etc, etc.
Those who still idolize George Strait, Kenny, or most of Alan Jackson's music need to take their head's out of the sand. Just because he's wearing a hat and/or boots does not make them "country". George and Alan are legends, but put out albums with one or two decent real songs with a bunch of other fluff. Be open-minded and remember what those artists USED to sing...The Chair, The Fireman, Wanted, or Midnight in Montgomery.

76. the pink baker -
The ACM and CMAs have NEVER been about "talent", its always been a popularity contest. Why are y'all so surprised????? I no longer listen to country, but I'm glad someone knocked Kenny off his high horse, the man acted like he was the reason country music was popular. Get a life people, no one really cares about who wins or loses.

77. Tigger -
we are not haters i like underwood and lambert both, but at this time i see no one who will reach the status of ledgend (and yes I am old enought to remember both strait and jackson debutes). From the first time he sang EVERYONE knew strait would follow in the footsteps of the greats.

78. Yahoo! Music User -
beethoven and bach were talented too, but do you still listen to them? fact is some will be legends forever while the rest give the people what they want in this century. b&b died and so did their big fans, yet their music is still here for our enjoyment, but what would they think about randy travis or clint black and yes, george strait or even jones? or better yet in 100 years dig up george and ask him what he thinks of what country music will be then. fact is times change and the music changes with the times. enjoy the transition. we live in great times for music. get your cumberbun out of a wad.

79. Yahoo! Music User -
Taylor Swift rocks!
