The 2009 BET Awards: A Tribute To MJ

Posted Sun Jun 28, 2009 9:02pm PDT by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

It can't come as a surprise to anyone that the 2009 BET Awards will go down in history as being all about the legacy of one entertainer.

Guess which entertainer? Yes, you guessed correctly.

In what must have taken a monumental effort of teamwork, flexibility, and ingenuity—the annual awards program overhauled whatever original plans it had and hastily centered its entire focus on a tribute to the late Michael Jackson, who passed away unexpectedly last Thursday.

The telecast ran an extra 30 minutes in order to accommodate all of the tribute material.

The tone for the evening was set by a quote from Jackson's father, Joe, who called his son "the greatest star in the world" and told reporters outside the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, "I wish he could be here."

The pre-awards show, generally a fashion fest for stars to show off their latest designer finds, turned into a touching tribute of its own, with hosts Terrence J. and Rocsi asking everyone for their favorite Jackson moment or song.

The mega-stars of the evening seemed honored to take a backseat to Jackson's memory. Host Jamie Foxx opened the show with a request to "celebrate," providing the crowd with a shaky attempt at moonwalking and a re-enactment of Jackson's iconic "Beat It" choreography—complete with red jacket and glove.

Many of the performers of the evening incorporated homages to Jackson: Most notably, Ciara sang his "Heal The World," Best Male R&B winner Ne-Yo performed "Lady In My Life," and New Edition ran through a medley of Jackson 5 hits.

A chant of "Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson," ran through the auditorium as four-time nominee and Best New Artist winner Keri Hilson performed.

Winners of the awards thanked the late Jackson in their speeches, as well. Five-time-nominated Beyonce, who won for Best R&B Female Artist, called Jackson her "hero."

Legendary R&B band the O'Jays, whose classic music won the Lifetime Achievement award, even graciously shared their moment and paid their respects, as singer Eddie Levert touchingly noted how much he'd miss Jackson.

In a tremendous surprise, Jackson's sister Janet took the stage, making her first public appearance sincer her brother's death, and spoke on behalf of her entire family, thanking fans for their love and support. Following her appearance, Ne-Yo and Jamie Foxx took the stage to perform the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There."

Michael Jackson
They Don't Care About us Lyrics:
Skin head, dead head
Everybody gone bad
Situation, aggravation
Everybody allegation
In the suite, on the news
Everybody dog food
Bang bang, shot dead
Everybody's gone mad

All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us
All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us

Beat me, hate me
You can never break me
Will me, thrill me
You can never kill me
Jew me, Sue me
Everybody do me
Kick me, [profane] me
Don't you black or white me

All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us
All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us

Tell me what has become of my life
I have a wife and two
children who love me
I am the victim of
police brutality, now
I'm tired of bein' the victim of hate
You're rapin' me of my pride
Oh, for God's sake
I look to heaven to
fulfill its prophecy...
Set me free

Skin head, dead head
Everybody gone bad
trepidation, speculation
Everybody allegation
In the suite, on the news
Everybody dog food
black man, black mail
Throw your brother in jail

All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us
All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us

Tell me what has become of my rights
Am I invisible because you ignore me?
Your proclamation promised
me free liberty, now
I'm tired of bein' the victim of shame
They're throwing me in a
class with a bad name
I can't believe this is the
land from which I came
You know I do really hate to say it
The government don't wanna see
But if Roosevelt was livin'
He wouldn't let this be, no, no

Skin head, dead head
Everybody gone bad
Situation, speculation
Everybody litigation
Beat me, bash me
You can never trash me
Hit me, kick me
You can never get me

All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us
All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us

Some things in life they
just don't wanna see
But if Martin Luther was livin'
He wouldn't let this be

Skin head, dead head
Everybody gone bad
Situation, segregation
Everybody allegation
In the suite, on the news
Everybody dog food
Kick me, [profane] me
Don't you wrong or right me

All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us
All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us

All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us
All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us

All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us
All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us

Wow I almost cried. Janet tried so hard to hold back which is why she said she would keep the speech short but her voice started cracking toward the end and she was about to cry. It's gonna be so hard for her. She's the only Jackson left to carry on the Legacy. Love you Janet and will always support you no matter what. You lost a big brother who you were close to. Now Michael and the Jackson name lives only through you.

The world has lost a true legend, humanitarian, idol, superstar, & culture icon w/ Michael's passing, there will never be another like him in this lifetime. Myself, as I'm sure many others who grew up in the 80s & listened to MJ, looked up to him as a source of inspiration & dreams. He inspired my love for dance - especially modern dance (i.e. Britney, JT, Beyonce, Usher, etc.) & my aspirations of wanting to pursue a career in choreography. I may definitely take it up now w/ Michael now finally at peace.

"Thriller" was the first CD I ever owned when I was younger & MJ has remained my idol since that time, even here & now. For him no longer being with us, I felt as a large part of my childhood has been stripped away. But, just he would do & want all of those who loved him & his music to do, I'm moving on & thinking of the great times & the legacy he's left behind.

To all of his fans, his friends, his family, my deepest prayers & condolences are w/ all of you from now until the end...

To MJ, you were the best there was, the best there is, & the best there ever will be. You'll always be remembered & never forgotten. R.I.P. "The King Of Pop"

What makes the BET racist? Well, look at the name : Black Entertainment Television. There are black magazines, black television channels. Everyone knows that they could never get away with White Entertainment Television or a magazine with a name describing white people. Every black person in America would fight tooth and nail and cry "racist" and "prejudiced" but God forbid we say a word about BET or Ebony magazine because then every black person in America would again cry "racist" and "prejudice" so it is totally lose-lose for the white people that fought to create this country into what it is today. This is now a totally equal-race country so just deal with it.

71. Lee -
When is the White People awards going to happen?

72. Jessica -
I also understand what his family is going through but they are a strong family and they will stick together to get through this hard time

73. Joshua -
Loved the show LONG LIVE THE KING and everyone who is unsympathetic towards MJ's death, wait till you die hope you are treated the same way but holes.

74. captain punching bag -
Suddenly Michael Jackson is black. When he was alive, black people wouldn't claim him, but when he dies and there is publicity to be had for these people he is a black man. Two faced mfers.

75. Know A -
I feel so sad for MJ he never had a child hood i have to not think about the side my hart is broken for that young boy joe jackson is an [profane]

76. Martin -
holy crap billy may died

77. Yahoo! Music User -
Jamie Foxx is awesome. However, as an African American and everyone I know...We do NOT watch this channel.BET misrepresents the African American community as a whole. The young money performance was a prime example of why I can not support this type of crap. Young girls on stage dancing to the every girl song? A very explicit song that stereotypes what everybody already thinks black men represent: promiscuity and lack of anything intelligent to say. Stop trying to tell the world that black people are idiots. No intelligent person I know supports this television network. How unfortunate, when originally it had so much to offer.

ANYWHO, RIP MJ, KING OF POP
Some of the performances were a true delight! (Jamie and Neyo, Ojays, and others)

RAP MUSIC NEEDS TO BE STOPPED BEFORE IT GETS ANY WORSE.

78. Joe S -
Well, Mikey's death is the biggest thing since Princess Dianne's and this will go on for a while. Get used to it. Until Madonna or Paul Mcartney dies.

80. Justin -
i love michael jackson more than most people , i will miss him, the world is not the same without him in it, i can just picture the real michael jackson without all that plastic surgery and his real skin color, he must of really been a deep person to change his appearance that much, i love him for that, i think he will be in heaven, i truely think he was a good person
