The 2009 BET Awards: A Tribute To MJ

Posted Sun Jun 28, 2009 9:02pm PDT by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

It can't come as a surprise to anyone that the 2009 BET Awards will go down in history as being all about the legacy of one entertainer.

Guess which entertainer? Yes, you guessed correctly.

In what must have taken a monumental effort of teamwork, flexibility, and ingenuity—the annual awards program overhauled whatever original plans it had and hastily centered its entire focus on a tribute to the late Michael Jackson, who passed away unexpectedly last Thursday.

The telecast ran an extra 30 minutes in order to accommodate all of the tribute material.

The tone for the evening was set by a quote from Jackson's father, Joe, who called his son "the greatest star in the world" and told reporters outside the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, "I wish he could be here."

The pre-awards show, generally a fashion fest for stars to show off their latest designer finds, turned into a touching tribute of its own, with hosts Terrence J. and Rocsi asking everyone for their favorite Jackson moment or song.

The mega-stars of the evening seemed honored to take a backseat to Jackson's memory. Host Jamie Foxx opened the show with a request to "celebrate," providing the crowd with a shaky attempt at moonwalking and a re-enactment of Jackson's iconic "Beat It" choreography—complete with red jacket and glove.

Many of the performers of the evening incorporated homages to Jackson: Most notably, Ciara sang his "Heal The World," Best Male R&B winner Ne-Yo performed "Lady In My Life," and New Edition ran through a medley of Jackson 5 hits.

A chant of "Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson," ran through the auditorium as four-time nominee and Best New Artist winner Keri Hilson performed.

Winners of the awards thanked the late Jackson in their speeches, as well. Five-time-nominated Beyonce, who won for Best R&B Female Artist, called Jackson her "hero."

Legendary R&B band the O'Jays, whose classic music won the Lifetime Achievement award, even graciously shared their moment and paid their respects, as singer Eddie Levert touchingly noted how much he'd miss Jackson.

In a tremendous surprise, Jackson's sister Janet took the stage, making her first public appearance sincer her brother's death, and spoke on behalf of her entire family, thanking fans for their love and support. Following her appearance, Ne-Yo and Jamie Foxx took the stage to perform the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There."

Amazing tribute to MJ!! Best was when Janet came out, I cried a river! I agree to bad Mariah wasn't there to sing I'll be there. On 6/25/09 yes there were two very Iconic people who passed away the difference is we were all prepared for Farrah Fawcett, We were NOT prepared for Michael Jackson to pass away! and people calling him a perv we will never know the truth he wasn't found guilty in my heart he is innocent and I am a victim myself, people want to point fingers at him but look at the catholic churches full of molesters...BUT people still go..sooo why shouldn't we feel sadness for MJ? Lets remember all he HAS done for the world...if you don't know then educate yourself!!! May he be at peace now...R.I.P Michael Jackson & Farrah Fawcett 6/25/09...great job BET!!

Long Live Jesus Christ!! Micheal was but a man we will all perish someday, we are not promised tomorrow, yes it is sad for his loss but he was just a person like you and me, not someone to be idolized. Long Live My God!

yea so michael touched sum boys and i totally agree that is wrong BUT yu cant just solely blame mike for that..whose dumb az parents decided to leave they child with him anyways...? As a parent, i would have NEVER left my child with him-and that's just common sense.

BET is not racist...the only reason bet was formed was because other channels wouldnt play african american artists and music. so if yu want to place the "racist" title on anyone...it is DEFINATELY not bet.

There will never be another performer in MJ's league. He was the best entertainer that ever lived. The entire world knew who he was. I grew up listening to MJ. He will be missed forever.

I leave my sympathies to the Jackson family. I know what it is like to loose a loved one. I grew up listening to MJ. He was part of my youth. With his death it suddenly made me feel all that much older. I can only imagine what it is like to loose a parent at such a young age. My thoughts are with his children.

The first two posters here have been reported to Yahoo by many people, day after day. Their comments are solicitations for business, and have nothing at all to do with the topic.

That said, as a white person, I though the BET awards were extremely well-done, considering the time constraints caused by having to change the entire show around to honor Michael Jackson. And to the poster who thinks the BET awards are "racist", duh...they're awards for African-American people, whether sports, music, etc., but plenty of white people appreciate the professionalism they showed tonight.

If Michael molested any children why was he not locked up?? Because he was innocent.

Just a thought...if he did molest any children and the parent's of the children took a payoff - then shame on those parents...if someone molested one of my children I would not want money I would want the person locked up. THANK YOU!

I liked some of his music, Thriller being the first to come to mind. Whether you love him or hate him, he made an impact that will be felt for some time to come. I wish him well in The Last Journey we will all make in the end.

How Is BLACK Entertainment Racist? This award had nothing to do with color, if that's the case MJ would have been honored on MTV.Always has to be one to mess up the Tempo.

I liked the earlier stuff MJ did...the later stuff not so much. But you have to admit he changed music and the world with his songs. What other person can go anywhere in the world and be treated like a god?(well at least in his hay-day) R.I.P MJ
