The 2009 BET Awards: A Tribute To MJ

Posted Sun Jun 28, 2009 9:02pm PDT by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

It can't come as a surprise to anyone that the 2009 BET Awards will go down in history as being all about the legacy of one entertainer.

Guess which entertainer? Yes, you guessed correctly.

In what must have taken a monumental effort of teamwork, flexibility, and ingenuity—the annual awards program overhauled whatever original plans it had and hastily centered its entire focus on a tribute to the late Michael Jackson, who passed away unexpectedly last Thursday.

The telecast ran an extra 30 minutes in order to accommodate all of the tribute material.

The tone for the evening was set by a quote from Jackson's father, Joe, who called his son "the greatest star in the world" and told reporters outside the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, "I wish he could be here."

The pre-awards show, generally a fashion fest for stars to show off their latest designer finds, turned into a touching tribute of its own, with hosts Terrence J. and Rocsi asking everyone for their favorite Jackson moment or song.

The mega-stars of the evening seemed honored to take a backseat to Jackson's memory. Host Jamie Foxx opened the show with a request to "celebrate," providing the crowd with a shaky attempt at moonwalking and a re-enactment of Jackson's iconic "Beat It" choreography—complete with red jacket and glove.

Many of the performers of the evening incorporated homages to Jackson: Most notably, Ciara sang his "Heal The World," Best Male R&B winner Ne-Yo performed "Lady In My Life," and New Edition ran through a medley of Jackson 5 hits.

A chant of "Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson," ran through the auditorium as four-time nominee and Best New Artist winner Keri Hilson performed.

Winners of the awards thanked the late Jackson in their speeches, as well. Five-time-nominated Beyonce, who won for Best R&B Female Artist, called Jackson her "hero."

Legendary R&B band the O'Jays, whose classic music won the Lifetime Achievement award, even graciously shared their moment and paid their respects, as singer Eddie Levert touchingly noted how much he'd miss Jackson.

In a tremendous surprise, Jackson's sister Janet took the stage, making her first public appearance sincer her brother's death, and spoke on behalf of her entire family, thanking fans for their love and support. Following her appearance, Ne-Yo and Jamie Foxx took the stage to perform the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There."

When do the CET (Chinese Entertainment Television) awards come on?.....or the HET (Hispanic Entertainment Televsion) come on?....Why is there no IET (Indian Entertainment Television) ....
or JET (Japanese Entertainment Television).....Why do black people get their own special channel and awards show?....I don't get it?

I think he did a great job of breaking racial barries with his music and talent. And isn't it ironic that as a black man he may be tease for being "colored," yet he so easily become white cuz of the disease? It's like, now are u still going to be racist to him? He's the same color as u. :P
R.I.P. Hope the king of pop is living with the king of kings.

I missed it and I regret that. Michael was a cute little boy that never had a chance to be a kid. People misinterpreted him and his character because of the media maggots. Michael was a big part of my life when I was growing up in the 80's, he was everywhere whether he was dancing on stage, or with zombies, or on light up tiles, he was the hottest thing! A true legend that came out of nowhere. I wasn;t the biggest fan of him, but I knew his importance and I certainly didn't dislike the man. I hope Janet continues with the upbringing of his 3 beautiful little children here after, her and Michael was so close anyway. Janet, my heart really goes out to her, I know her pain. Tha Jacksons need to ignore the moronic comments left by some and cherish the ones that are uniquely heartfelt at this time or pain, loss, and sorrow in they're troubled lives, and may god be with them.

My warmest wishes to the Jacksons' family members. Trust the court will entrust the children to MJ's family as the whole family members are great artistes and will definitely train them to be great artistes as MJ & other Jacksons.
May the mighty LORD bless the Jacksons' family members.

All the world mourns. Yet - the children of the world are much safer today then they were last week.

It's about time to stop idolizing this guy - when he was alive he was an outcast because he was a pedophile, now all the sudden he's this great man? Why weren't all these people on the news talking about how great he was last month? last year? Because they are all hypocrites - now that he's dead they have to praise him - almost nobody wanted to be his friend or acknowlege they were when he was alive. Because they knew what he was.

No - he was a great singer, a great entertainer. But he was never a great man - he was a child molester. And for those that say you shouldn't speak ill of the dead - bullsh*t. We speak ill of many criminals and child molesters - why not him? Because he could sing and dance? Not a good enough reason.

I have been watching Bet all day and then fell asleep and missed the awards but I want to applaud the other artists for their tribute to MJ, as we are all deeply saddened by his passing. If only Michael knew how much he was truly loved. My heart goes out to Michael's family and they are in my prayers. For the sake of Michael's family please show some compassion for their loss and keep unkind words to yourself. Rest in peace Michael...we love you!
