The 2009 BET Awards: A Tribute To MJ

Posted Sun Jun 28, 2009 9:02pm PDT by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

It can't come as a surprise to anyone that the 2009 BET Awards will go down in history as being all about the legacy of one entertainer.

Guess which entertainer? Yes, you guessed correctly.

In what must have taken a monumental effort of teamwork, flexibility, and ingenuity—the annual awards program overhauled whatever original plans it had and hastily centered its entire focus on a tribute to the late Michael Jackson, who passed away unexpectedly last Thursday.

The telecast ran an extra 30 minutes in order to accommodate all of the tribute material.

The tone for the evening was set by a quote from Jackson's father, Joe, who called his son "the greatest star in the world" and told reporters outside the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, "I wish he could be here."

The pre-awards show, generally a fashion fest for stars to show off their latest designer finds, turned into a touching tribute of its own, with hosts Terrence J. and Rocsi asking everyone for their favorite Jackson moment or song.

The mega-stars of the evening seemed honored to take a backseat to Jackson's memory. Host Jamie Foxx opened the show with a request to "celebrate," providing the crowd with a shaky attempt at moonwalking and a re-enactment of Jackson's iconic "Beat It" choreography—complete with red jacket and glove.

Many of the performers of the evening incorporated homages to Jackson: Most notably, Ciara sang his "Heal The World," Best Male R&B winner Ne-Yo performed "Lady In My Life," and New Edition ran through a medley of Jackson 5 hits.

A chant of "Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson," ran through the auditorium as four-time nominee and Best New Artist winner Keri Hilson performed.

Winners of the awards thanked the late Jackson in their speeches, as well. Five-time-nominated Beyonce, who won for Best R&B Female Artist, called Jackson her "hero."

Legendary R&B band the O'Jays, whose classic music won the Lifetime Achievement award, even graciously shared their moment and paid their respects, as singer Eddie Levert touchingly noted how much he'd miss Jackson.

In a tremendous surprise, Jackson's sister Janet took the stage, making her first public appearance sincer her brother's death, and spoke on behalf of her entire family, thanking fans for their love and support. Following her appearance, Ne-Yo and Jamie Foxx took the stage to perform the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There."

Ya what about Farrah Fawcett?? WHO CARES. My condolences go out to her family BUT she never accomplished what MJ did...She never gave 50 million dollars to charities...She never started USA for Africa Fund...She was in Charlie's Angels TV show and had 1 famous poster...whoooooptydoooooo! RIP to the both Farrah & Michael..But don't get upset why MJ has the spotlight right now.

I like how individuals are making speculations about if there was a WET Awards. The fact of the matter is that, for the longest time, there was a WET. However, it was known as the Grammy's. Had award shows like the Grammys been integrated from the very beginning, award shows like the one presented tonight by BET would never have had a reason to come into existence. Now, even though integration has come into play, these award show are a tradition and are respected as such.

HI all

So where were all his fans when he was alive and could have used all this support. Did he all of a sudden become the King of Pop once again because he died ? How come it is that someone has to die to be recognized for all the good they have done in life. It seems people thrive on making such a big deal of someone's mistakes instead ? It's so sad that all his fans couldn't be behind him like this during his life. Remember ! if any of you are so perfect & can honestly say you have never done anything you regret and you actually think your perfect you deserve that seat on the right hand side of GOD ! Jackson was human like the rest of us except for one small thing, he actually contributed something great to our history, unlike most of us.

Geez can others let those that want to grieve, grieve and those that want to celebrate his life celebrate and keep all of their uninformed hate to themselves? Funny how people will say things on a blog they would never have the guts to say to the person's face. Go deal with your cowardice and leave others at peace.

It was a good show, I could have done without a lot of the gangsta rap performances as that is not my thing, but I understand it was for an audience different than me and can accept it.

For those that asked the show was on BET. If you can get On Demand on your cable box (normally channel 1) you can rewatch it again for free.

Having lost a sibling, my heart goes out to the family and I think Janet showed great grace in addressing the public. She didn't have to do it, but probably thought about how much Michael adored his fans and wanted to do it for that reason. It took a lot of strength and courage.

As far as Joe Jackson goes, he is what he is. MJ struggled with whom his father was but found some way to accept it because he had to if he wanted a relationship with the rest of his family. I think JJ loves his children but he is an old man from a different time and just doesn't understand the norms of today's world. Like him or hate him, at the end of the day without JJ there would have been no MJ, even MJ realized that much.

I think they missed the mark on the BET Awards they should of done the we r the world type thing for the final song. Great performance Jamie but why werent all the performers on the stage as a tribute to "The King of Pop". God bless the Jackson Family, much love..

Yes the BET awards are racist, I agree! You see them honoring any white people lately?

FARAH FAWCETT DESERVES SOME ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AS WELL. SHE WAS THE BEST ANGEL!

The world have really mourned MJ and shown great friendship to him. I wish he did not die. I wish he could come back to life. But he is gone. He had made a mark and left an indellible impression in the physical world he left behind. Yes. But I wish above all things that his close friends had done much to keep him alive. I believe that Jackson did not look frail because of health condition. But because he felt hurt by the very litigations brought against him by the same people he thought he had done much for. At this time of withdrawal and hurt, the right friends were not there for him. Let his death remind us that there are many other people like him who need our good friendship in order to escape such a tragic death. May his soul rest in peace.

condelensce to the jackson family. to cuddlebunny2003 who cares about farrah facet, you mourn for her. and to jerry j, nobody complained about the coverage princess diana got or anyone else that was white who died and the media decided to pay their respects or tributes. But let Michael or anyone else of color die and its "this whole thing is going to far". Hey turn your tv and your radio off then if you dont like it.

175. Karen -
neither janet jackson nor her father cried one tear for michael, what a cold family

176. Brian -
let the man rest in peace.

177. mabo_83 -
I wonder. It would be considerate racist to have a ceremony only for white people?

178. kenisha -
Thomas C, MJ may not have responded to you this way...but I'm not nearly as timid..YOU are a piece of $#@!

179. Joel -

I don't get it, Every other celebrity made jokes about him and the molestation stuff and joked on his nose and turning white, but as soon as he passes they want to be all sad and talk about how much he means to them, WHAT A JOKE. and the BET awards was so damn boring worst ever to me
