The 2008 Dove Awards

Posted Thu Apr 24, 2008 2:01pm PDT by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...
So, you think Christian music is a snore, and/or has little impact on the music world at large? Think again, as you witness the 2008 Dove Awards' Artist of the Year, TobyMac. This guy not only ruled the Christian scene last night, but his latest genre-bending album (Portable Sounds) debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 album chart the week of its release.

Aside from Mr. Mac--whose album also won the Doves' rock/contemporary album award--last night's show offered up some pretty darn solid rock and pop material in general. Mark Hall, who leads up Casting Crowns, collected four awards as a solo entity and three as part of his band. Chris Tomlin, who was the undisputed heavyweight winner last year, still managed to add his third male vocalist win to his belt. Natalie Grant also won her third award for female vocalist.

The show was at the historic Grand Ole Opry stage, and in a nod to this Nashville landmark, country queen Wynnona performed a duet with Grant as part of the evening's entertainment. Additionally, Charlie Daniels closed the show with an energetic performance of "I'll Fly Away."

Wynonna also took time to pose with best new artist Brandon Heath:

In a nod to pop culture in general, three American Idol alumni--Phil Stacey, Chris Sligh, and Mandisa--performed with Christian's legendary Amy Grant in a tribute to another legend, Michael W. Smith. No snores here!

Nashville was a buzz this week as the 2008 GMA Dove Awards were handed out. I'm glad TobyMac won for artist of the year. Casting Crowns singer Mark Hall collected four Dove Awards and did you know they pray over every seat before that nights show. Simply amazing.. Congratulations to all those who were nominated, but as we all know there can only be one winner…

Wow, I have met Michael W. a couple of times and never knew he carried legendary status. I didn't know this because he doesn't think he is legendary, he just is a good guy that plays the music he feels like playing.

But why would you call him legendary, isn't that kind of idyllic and doesn't god frown upon that kind of thinking.

Just a thought.

yes you are right there are so many bands that no one thinks is christian and they are Switchfoot great band and skillet they are awesome and that goes to show you can rock out and still listen to christian music and God will bring us through everything

yeah seriously there are so many bands out there that are influenced by their religion. Anberlin, Thousand Foot Krutch, RED, The Devil Wears Prada, Mae. All of these bands are mainstream and still keep Christ in their life.

Praise Jesus. As most serious music buffs know, there is no such thing as Gospel Music, but Gospel Lyrics. Be nice to see Rez Band in the mix again, and who can forget Phil Keggy. Phil is no doubt one of the best axe players to ever walk the planet. Good to see that my brothers and sisters in Christ undersand using music as a vehicle to get the Good News across. We will see them all in Paradise restored.

That's right... Jesus, the Christ wins all of the time. It's very funny, if there would have been a different set of judges, the outcome would have been very different.

I hope everyone gets saved, and Christ is the only way to that salvation. However, Christian musicians are not putting out top notch music. Toby Mac debuting in the top ten happens because there are millions of Christians out there who will go out and buy based on promotion. If the album was in the top 10 a month later, then the group's music would be the reason for the sales.

I I just started listening to contemporary christian about a year ago, and I am hooked! Most of the words are understandable, and I love singing along! It lifts my spirit, and gets me in the mood to share peace and joy with others on my way to work!!. I love it!! Thank you Jesus!!

Congratulations Dove award winners.
I have a changing and uplifting idea that
worked for me. I set my alarm clock to music now after accidentally setting it there while I was trying to push snooze one morning ( I switched regular alarm to music),
so that when I woke up air1 would be playing.
Since then I wake up and God speaks through
the music and I have something to be thankful
for everyday. It leads me where I need to be and that is in Gods' courts. It helps God be shown as alive
as He is and not even ourselves get in the
way, suicide is destroyed in the presence of
The God of the Holy Bible. God bless you All
and may His heart be your only Abode. Amen.
