The 2008 CMA Awards

Posted Wed Nov 12, 2008 9:19pm PST by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

With very little surprises as to the nominees, the CMA Awards generally serve as a feast for fashion commentary (see here for more on that) and/or a slate of commentary on presenters or performers. We'll cut to the chase. Here's our take on who won versus who should have won. (Sometimes the two coincide!) Read on, country music lovers.

The big ‘un: Entertainer of the year. Kenny Chesney won this one again, and we'll start out our commentary on a positive note. He should win this award. Yes, he keeps winning it, which is a bit boring...but realistically, Kenny runs circles around the competition in this category. Editorial note: Why is Sugarland nominated here and not Rascal Flatts? Why is Brad Paisley nominated but not Tim McGraw? For the umpteenth time, where are the chicks in this category, save Jennifer Nettles? Is it worth it to even ask these basic and oft-repeated questions?

Male Vocalist of the Year: Kenny Chesney is THE vocalist of the year, but Brad Paisley is a fair decision here. George Strait is awesome but has been dialing it in for a while now. Keith Urban is too Hollywood boy and his wife talks too much about him in hushed terms in Vogue magazine-type articles. Alan Jackson made a credible shot at things this year with a great album and some humor (see "Good Time" video), but Brad still can goofball it up over him and hang out with Kellie Pickler and Taylor Swift and Andy Griffith.

Female Vocalist of the Year: Carrie Underwood. Analysis needed? Alison Krauss has the power of Zep, but nobody reading In Style or People really wants to speculate on who she's dating or what she's wearing, or what color nailpolish she's got on. Taylor Swift has-well, had-the power of Camp Rock, but perhaps that worked against her. Miranda Lambert is saucy and hot and talented, but your Aunt Jane in Florida doesn't know who she is. Martina hangs in there year after year, and she's lovely, but, whatever. Result? Carrie. Fine choice. Where's Faith Hill? She looked GREAT on the cover of Shape, dang it.

New Artist of the Year: Everyone in this category is immensely talented and fun to look at and listen to, but Lady Antebellum stands out as...well...the actual newest in a category dedicated to new. We here at Y! Music have dedicated considerable time and love already to the talents of Jason Aldean, James Otto, Rodney Atkins, and godloveusofcourse Kellie Pickler. (To be fair, we have also championed Lady A. But just weighing things on a timely scale.)

Vocal Group: Rascal Flatts won, as they should-but, why the hell does this group keep getting shafted? They are so beyond "vocal group." They are in the Kenny territory, for crying out loud. And, they've won this Group award like 80 times in a row by now. Should be ready to graduate to a bigger league, no? And, in all fairness, this blogger is still annoyed that they were beat out for a Grammy by the fracking Dixie Chicks for that mediocre anti-Bush song that nobody gives a crap about anymore, which seems especially forgettable a statement now that Obama is president elect and everyone's in a good mood.

Vocal Duo: Sugarland. Shallow note: Jennifer Nettles sure had a beautiful dress on-outdoing even Keith Urbans's famously fashionable wife. But, oooh, is Brooks & Dunn rolling in their graves? Er, shaking in their shoes, that is? (In a cynical mood tonight, sorry.) What is this Wreckers nomination, while we are being cynical?

Single of the Year: George Strait. Mmmm, I was feeling the Kenny track a bit more, but I suppose since Ken won the big award that they had to spread the love a bit.

Album of the Year: George Strait again. No! Sorry. This one should have gone to Carrie Underwood, hook, line, and sinker. I won't even concede to George's legendary status here or the need to respect it. THE one country album that everyone, even country haters, was talking about (well, besides Jessica Simpson's) was Carrie's. This is a shaft.

Song of the Year: Well, I suppose this was a fairly evenly divided category. I felt both "Stay" and "Good Time" hit harder in terms of video, and the rest were an evenly divided match. So no real strong feelings on this particular category.

Musical event of the year: Alison Krauss and Robert Plant-okay, cool, fair enough. I prefer "Shiftwork," personally on a pure country-music basis, but recognize that Robert Plant doesn't just commit himself like this for nothing.

Music Video: Andy Griffith is a totally unfair advantage. But this was deserved. Even though Alan Jackson's line-dancing record actually did fool us into thinking it was, well, real! Fo' real. In fact, we even called his peeps to do some fact checking on whether the record was actually broken. (The coffeemaker was broken that day...okay?)

Until next year, signing off with a nod to Nashville and a tip of the hat. And, a prayer of thanks for being able to watch an event that hosts both Kid Rock AND Nicole Kidman.

The acoustics were not what they could have been on the CMA awards, the music overpowered the voices. There was too much rock sounding music, what has happened to country?

2. Mule -
Taylor Swift's performance greatly disappointed me. I would have figured someone with a recording contract wouldn't sound like a karaoke singer in a bar somewhere. Perhaps it was her looks that got her the contract, or maybe she just had an off night. Whatever the reason, I sure hope her concerts aren't as plain sounding as her live performance last night was.

some of the great county music musicians were missing from the night....toby keith, dierks bentley, tim mcgraw. that was a huge disappointment!!!! hope they get it right next year.

4. Jeff -
Martina McBride is THE Female Vocalists of EVERY year! I'm tired of the 'new kid on the block' winning everything. Martina sings circles around the rest of them. JMO

What has happened to country music???The girls were dressed like street walkers, the music anything but country, sorry but what ever happened to real country songs where you could understand the words and artists stood center stage and sang songs from their heart. We turned it off after the guy with the hat and big sunshades, he was just dreadful. Johnny Cash probably turned over in his grave.

for a non-country bumkin who enjoyed the show and would like to follow-up on winners and losers, the fact that you gave few last names seems kinda dumb...

A real YAWNER indeed this year. Did practically every artist pick their worst song to play. Martina how old are you with that outfit on and sorry MB lovers but her songs will not be today's hits. Did we need to see Carrie's 100 outfits as if we're watching a fashion show. The acoustics were awful and yes it sounds like Taylor needs some singing lessons. And COME ON PEOPLE album of the year to George S. Who are they kidding.

I am so sick of Carrie Underwood! Granted, she is talented and all that stuff, but she is crammed down our throats at every turn. She must have the world's best marketing people. Taylor Swift is a cutie and has a great personality, but the girl sounds awful! Give me the honesty and heart of Miranda Lambert any time!

9. Horse Up!! -
I can not believe Carrie Underwood won female voc. of the year! Taylor Swift should of won! I too am sick of C.U. she is way way over-rated! Taylor is awesome!

10. Unhappy -
Toby Keith won't do the CMA, he has never won and he is tired of the disappointment. You will never see him there. I am tired of Kenny I don’t think he is entertainer of the year and I think Taylor Swift should have won an award.

11. Sue -
Taylor Swift sounds great in concert. The sound no the show last night was horrible!

12. BJ -
I agree, where are ALL the other great artists in country music at????? Have they all been forgotten in the shadows of Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley??? I saw the same artists over and over again last night... such a disappiontment! I want to see the legends of country music... All the new artists have gotten caught up with this new style of country and rock maybe even a little rap (Carrie Underwood) all mixed together! Come on, let's keep it country like Miranda Lambert!!! And let's get all the other taleneted if not more talented artists out there in the spot light!

13. Yahoo! Music User -
Where was Dierks and why did it sound so bad?

14. BJ -
Last night was awful... samo people... where is the COUNTRY at? Where are the LEGENDS? AND George Strait deserved every award he got to those who disagree you're no country!

15. Melanie W -
i enjoyed watching the show. i thought that someone other than carrie should have won for female vocalist. as where was tim mcgraw? kenny accepted entertainer of the year with grace. he should win this.
also, in today's economy, carrie should have stuck with 2 dresses and not the 6 or 7 she wore. shame on you carrie. have a little respect for what is going on.

16. Pearl -
What happened?I thought that was suppose to be Country Music Awards? With Kelley and her hooker outfit, and Kid Rock??C mon maybe i'm getting old but where is the talent like George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings? Even Travis Tritt where has he gone. The songs sounded terrible I don't know whats up with that even Martina with that beautiful voice was off. A very disappointing show-- One last note-Kelly Pickler-she's cute but a singer)i don't think so)

17. Melanie W -
oh and p.s. what in the world did kellie pickler have on during her performance? she needs to remember that there are young girls watchig her. besides, this is country music, not "hoochie" music!

18. Lindsay -
to me--taylor swift is talentless and unattractive

19. Yahoo! Music User -
Im with you Cranky Yankee! Taylor Swift sucks! She always sounds bad. I think it is her looks that got her in this business!

20. Brenda -
The CMA's were to me a total let down. What was the deal with the sound guys? Half of the time you couldn't hear Reba's mic or Taylor's words. What gives with everyone "eatting the MIC"? You could not understand any body songs when they sang no matter who they were. SugarLand Don't Even get me started on them.... Martina McBride what was the deal with her? All she did was yell and not sing and those pants she wore come on they sucked. The whole night was a bust except for when Brad Kissed his wife and unborn baby and when The "King" George sang and won. That was some of the good part. R.Flat was FLAT they suck.
Carrie was great to.
The whole show was lacking in all areas. But I am so sick of the singers who just get by on their looks and not on the sound of their voice. Where are all the reall COUNTRY SINGERS? Not the ones who sing by way of their nose. but that really sing.

Pinetop Perkins' 80-year career still going

AP
Fri Nov 27, 2009 4:03am PST

AP - Noisy crowds in smoky bars don't bother 96-year-old bluesman Pinetop Perkins. It's all part of his job. Most nights, after he snuffs out his menthol cigarette, Perkins slides onto the piano bench in some club and … More »
