The 2008 CMA Awards

Posted Wed Nov 12, 2008 9:19pm PST by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

With very little surprises as to the nominees, the CMA Awards generally serve as a feast for fashion commentary (see here for more on that) and/or a slate of commentary on presenters or performers. We'll cut to the chase. Here's our take on who won versus who should have won. (Sometimes the two coincide!) Read on, country music lovers.

The big ‘un: Entertainer of the year. Kenny Chesney won this one again, and we'll start out our commentary on a positive note. He should win this award. Yes, he keeps winning it, which is a bit boring...but realistically, Kenny runs circles around the competition in this category. Editorial note: Why is Sugarland nominated here and not Rascal Flatts? Why is Brad Paisley nominated but not Tim McGraw? For the umpteenth time, where are the chicks in this category, save Jennifer Nettles? Is it worth it to even ask these basic and oft-repeated questions?

Male Vocalist of the Year: Kenny Chesney is THE vocalist of the year, but Brad Paisley is a fair decision here. George Strait is awesome but has been dialing it in for a while now. Keith Urban is too Hollywood boy and his wife talks too much about him in hushed terms in Vogue magazine-type articles. Alan Jackson made a credible shot at things this year with a great album and some humor (see "Good Time" video), but Brad still can goofball it up over him and hang out with Kellie Pickler and Taylor Swift and Andy Griffith.

Female Vocalist of the Year: Carrie Underwood. Analysis needed? Alison Krauss has the power of Zep, but nobody reading In Style or People really wants to speculate on who she's dating or what she's wearing, or what color nailpolish she's got on. Taylor Swift has-well, had-the power of Camp Rock, but perhaps that worked against her. Miranda Lambert is saucy and hot and talented, but your Aunt Jane in Florida doesn't know who she is. Martina hangs in there year after year, and she's lovely, but, whatever. Result? Carrie. Fine choice. Where's Faith Hill? She looked GREAT on the cover of Shape, dang it.

New Artist of the Year: Everyone in this category is immensely talented and fun to look at and listen to, but Lady Antebellum stands out as...well...the actual newest in a category dedicated to new. We here at Y! Music have dedicated considerable time and love already to the talents of Jason Aldean, James Otto, Rodney Atkins, and godloveusofcourse Kellie Pickler. (To be fair, we have also championed Lady A. But just weighing things on a timely scale.)

Vocal Group: Rascal Flatts won, as they should-but, why the hell does this group keep getting shafted? They are so beyond "vocal group." They are in the Kenny territory, for crying out loud. And, they've won this Group award like 80 times in a row by now. Should be ready to graduate to a bigger league, no? And, in all fairness, this blogger is still annoyed that they were beat out for a Grammy by the fracking Dixie Chicks for that mediocre anti-Bush song that nobody gives a crap about anymore, which seems especially forgettable a statement now that Obama is president elect and everyone's in a good mood.

Vocal Duo: Sugarland. Shallow note: Jennifer Nettles sure had a beautiful dress on-outdoing even Keith Urbans's famously fashionable wife. But, oooh, is Brooks & Dunn rolling in their graves? Er, shaking in their shoes, that is? (In a cynical mood tonight, sorry.) What is this Wreckers nomination, while we are being cynical?

Single of the Year: George Strait. Mmmm, I was feeling the Kenny track a bit more, but I suppose since Ken won the big award that they had to spread the love a bit.

Album of the Year: George Strait again. No! Sorry. This one should have gone to Carrie Underwood, hook, line, and sinker. I won't even concede to George's legendary status here or the need to respect it. THE one country album that everyone, even country haters, was talking about (well, besides Jessica Simpson's) was Carrie's. This is a shaft.

Song of the Year: Well, I suppose this was a fairly evenly divided category. I felt both "Stay" and "Good Time" hit harder in terms of video, and the rest were an evenly divided match. So no real strong feelings on this particular category.

Musical event of the year: Alison Krauss and Robert Plant-okay, cool, fair enough. I prefer "Shiftwork," personally on a pure country-music basis, but recognize that Robert Plant doesn't just commit himself like this for nothing.

Music Video: Andy Griffith is a totally unfair advantage. But this was deserved. Even though Alan Jackson's line-dancing record actually did fool us into thinking it was, well, real! Fo' real. In fact, we even called his peeps to do some fact checking on whether the record was actually broken. (The coffeemaker was broken that day...okay?)

Until next year, signing off with a nod to Nashville and a tip of the hat. And, a prayer of thanks for being able to watch an event that hosts both Kid Rock AND Nicole Kidman.

Trace Adkins was the highlight for me.

I've heard Taylor Swift sing live before and she sucked big time. I don't think you can blame it on the sound. In concert, they probably "help" her or she sings along with her voice. But, every time I've heard her in a completely raw live setting she has sounded pitchy are horrible.

Horrible show, horrible outfits, just freaking horrible all around.

How many of you make your living entertaining? Easy to be a critic then to do the work............

They need to stop focusing on the "hot looks" of artists. Performers should be rewarded for their talent not what they wear. Unfortunately, this is happening in all genre of music. The more a female performer can look like a tramp, the better chance they have of winning. The better looking a male performer can get, the better chance of winning. All the young bubble gum singers need to get out of country and back into the pop scene where they belong. Award shows are overated, boring and are nothing more then a fashion show.

What happened this year? The sound was horrible. I was very disappointed in this years show. KID ROCK country? What has the country music turned into to!

27. Brian -
Rascal Flatts keeps getting shafted in country music awards because they aren't a country band. But I guess if we were basing this on real country music, the awards last night would have went a lot differently...

Too Hollywood? Who cares ab/ Nicole, I think Keith is so hot and he is very good and talented. He deserves to win. Why is it a popularity thing why the same people winning over & over? That makes the show so boring.

i totally agree with most of you. I think Carrie Underwood is overrated. What has happened to country? There are so many talented people out there. The loss of Johnny Cash changed country.

I'm not sure how you can call Carrie Underwood country and say she should win the album of the year. You say on a pure-country basis, Alison Kraus and Robert Plant should not have won and that George and Kenny should. Then you want to hand the COUNTRY album of the year to one of the biggest pop stars in the world right now. That doesn't make sense, the voters got it right, on the album. They did miss on the vocal event and entertainer awards though, and especially the new artist one, wow!

I would "do" George Strait for man over 50 he still has it.

Taylor Swift is just plain bad even for the bubble gum crowd. What has happened to country, this is it.Who listens to this stuff let alone buys it.

People here is the thing: The CMA'S are wonderful and they need a little tweaking. For Example, the Hall of Fame why don't people have the Legends perform before they get their award. The Stater Brothers haven't sang in years, but people would love to hear them again.I would have also like to seen Andy last night on "Waiting on a Woman".One more thing all the awards should be on there not part of them.

I miss 'Waylon and Willie and the boys'

It's become the most predictable awards show of the year. LIL WAYNE pretneding to play guitar wit hKid Rock, are you serious, priceless.

95% of the country music singers are such a disgrace to Country Music, where did our good ol COUNTRY MUSIC go and our artist that dressed like country singers and what the heck is kid rock on the CMA's What a disgrace!!!!! And yes George Strait deserves every award he wins.

Country is not what it used to be.. Whats with Nicole Kidman,,geez just cause she is married to Keith Urban doesn't mean she has to grace country music..She isn't a very good actress to begin with...Cmon lets get country again not everything else..Brad Paisley was about the only country guy there thats younger..ITS COUNTRY NOT THE EMMYS

38. BLUE EYES -
WELL WHY HATE ON CARRIE UNDERWOOD. YES SHE IS POPULAR AND PRETTY BUT ITS NOT ALL ABOUT LOOKS EITHER. JUST LIKE TAYLOR SWIFT, MIRANDA LAMBERT COME ON PPL GET OVER IT. THEY ALL DO GREAT IN THE ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS BUT I HAVE TO ADMIT KENNY CHESNEY SHOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN ENTERTAINER OF THE YR AWARD. THAT'S A NO BRAINER THERE. BUT OH WELL. STOP HATING ON CARRIE UNDERWOOD. I LOVE HER FOR THAT FACT!

First off who is the idiot who is posting sexually explicit items on here. WE DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR WEB PAGE!!!! Secondly if I was Miley Cirus I would have been embarressed by my dad to. Billy Ray cannot sing an he is riding his daughters coat tails. I also think that Martina McBride should have one female vocalist of the year. She rocks!! And do we really know if Carrie Underwood will be here in 10 years Martina has a solid country career Carrie hasn't and as for Rascall Flatts they should get more acknowledgement from the country community.

I will be honest. I got a little bored with all the performances....but what was with Rascal Flatts not performing?! I am beyond happy that Rascal won Vocal Group of the Year, but I do agree with you that they are in, if not past Kenny territory! When IS Rascal going to be nominated for Entertainer of the year?! I ADORED Taylor's performance last night! It was beautiful, and I love how she had on the beautiful purple gown and it changed to the white one! I also think that Taylor sounded marvelous! I was shocked and stoked to see Shania be the presenter for the big award! It was awesome seeing her on a country awards show since this whole divorce thing. Carrie Underwood is a great artist, and I say within a year, Taylor is going to reach Carrie's status! Next year, Rascal needs to be nominated for more than just one award! When is Shania coming back?! I'd love to hear from her again!
