The 2008 CMA Awards

Posted Wed Nov 12, 2008 9:19pm PST by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

With very little surprises as to the nominees, the CMA Awards generally serve as a feast for fashion commentary (see here for more on that) and/or a slate of commentary on presenters or performers. We'll cut to the chase. Here's our take on who won versus who should have won. (Sometimes the two coincide!) Read on, country music lovers.

The big ‘un: Entertainer of the year. Kenny Chesney won this one again, and we'll start out our commentary on a positive note. He should win this award. Yes, he keeps winning it, which is a bit boring...but realistically, Kenny runs circles around the competition in this category. Editorial note: Why is Sugarland nominated here and not Rascal Flatts? Why is Brad Paisley nominated but not Tim McGraw? For the umpteenth time, where are the chicks in this category, save Jennifer Nettles? Is it worth it to even ask these basic and oft-repeated questions?

Male Vocalist of the Year: Kenny Chesney is THE vocalist of the year, but Brad Paisley is a fair decision here. George Strait is awesome but has been dialing it in for a while now. Keith Urban is too Hollywood boy and his wife talks too much about him in hushed terms in Vogue magazine-type articles. Alan Jackson made a credible shot at things this year with a great album and some humor (see "Good Time" video), but Brad still can goofball it up over him and hang out with Kellie Pickler and Taylor Swift and Andy Griffith.

Female Vocalist of the Year: Carrie Underwood. Analysis needed? Alison Krauss has the power of Zep, but nobody reading In Style or People really wants to speculate on who she's dating or what she's wearing, or what color nailpolish she's got on. Taylor Swift has-well, had-the power of Camp Rock, but perhaps that worked against her. Miranda Lambert is saucy and hot and talented, but your Aunt Jane in Florida doesn't know who she is. Martina hangs in there year after year, and she's lovely, but, whatever. Result? Carrie. Fine choice. Where's Faith Hill? She looked GREAT on the cover of Shape, dang it.

New Artist of the Year: Everyone in this category is immensely talented and fun to look at and listen to, but Lady Antebellum stands out as...well...the actual newest in a category dedicated to new. We here at Y! Music have dedicated considerable time and love already to the talents of Jason Aldean, James Otto, Rodney Atkins, and godloveusofcourse Kellie Pickler. (To be fair, we have also championed Lady A. But just weighing things on a timely scale.)

Vocal Group: Rascal Flatts won, as they should-but, why the hell does this group keep getting shafted? They are so beyond "vocal group." They are in the Kenny territory, for crying out loud. And, they've won this Group award like 80 times in a row by now. Should be ready to graduate to a bigger league, no? And, in all fairness, this blogger is still annoyed that they were beat out for a Grammy by the fracking Dixie Chicks for that mediocre anti-Bush song that nobody gives a crap about anymore, which seems especially forgettable a statement now that Obama is president elect and everyone's in a good mood.

Vocal Duo: Sugarland. Shallow note: Jennifer Nettles sure had a beautiful dress on-outdoing even Keith Urbans's famously fashionable wife. But, oooh, is Brooks & Dunn rolling in their graves? Er, shaking in their shoes, that is? (In a cynical mood tonight, sorry.) What is this Wreckers nomination, while we are being cynical?

Single of the Year: George Strait. Mmmm, I was feeling the Kenny track a bit more, but I suppose since Ken won the big award that they had to spread the love a bit.

Album of the Year: George Strait again. No! Sorry. This one should have gone to Carrie Underwood, hook, line, and sinker. I won't even concede to George's legendary status here or the need to respect it. THE one country album that everyone, even country haters, was talking about (well, besides Jessica Simpson's) was Carrie's. This is a shaft.

Song of the Year: Well, I suppose this was a fairly evenly divided category. I felt both "Stay" and "Good Time" hit harder in terms of video, and the rest were an evenly divided match. So no real strong feelings on this particular category.

Musical event of the year: Alison Krauss and Robert Plant-okay, cool, fair enough. I prefer "Shiftwork," personally on a pure country-music basis, but recognize that Robert Plant doesn't just commit himself like this for nothing.

Music Video: Andy Griffith is a totally unfair advantage. But this was deserved. Even though Alan Jackson's line-dancing record actually did fool us into thinking it was, well, real! Fo' real. In fact, we even called his peeps to do some fact checking on whether the record was actually broken. (The coffeemaker was broken that day...okay?)

Until next year, signing off with a nod to Nashville and a tip of the hat. And, a prayer of thanks for being able to watch an event that hosts both Kid Rock AND Nicole Kidman.

George Strait deserves every award he got last night. Taylor Swift sounded horrible! Where the heck was Tim and Faith? Brad Paisley and Keith Urban put on a awesome performance at the beginnnig of the show. (Proably the best of the whole night) What the heck was Jennifer Nettiles (Sugarland) wearing when the did her performance? I cried through most of Carrie Underwood's song and left the room when Jason Aldean sung. (he is not country). The Eagles were awesome by the way. All in All pretty ok night for country music.

I love Carrie Underwood!! So glad she won!! I really like New Artist of the years Lady A. They rock.

43. Stephanie K -
The sound was terrible and I agree..what happened to country music? if this is the direction it is now taking, I'm done.

44. Todd -
These are the CMA awards, not the Island Music Awards. Kenny Chesney needs to come back to country music or go away. I personally do not think he deserves entertainer of the year. Give that award to a COUNTRY artist !

45. Dawn H -
Taylor Swift sounds terrible all the time it wasn't just last night. She was on Ellen the other day and sounded just as bad. She definitely needs some singing lessons.

What happened to country music? It looked like a rock and roll awards with the exception of George Strait. He should have won ALL the awards, he was the only one who performed country!!! He's the King.

Taylor Swift sounded like an amateur, as did a few others...I thought the show sucked. I want to hear from past Nashville Star winners such as Angela Hacker, who I thought was a great performer on the show! I am tired of seeing the same people win year after year, maybe it is political!

Kenny??? THE Vocalist???? There WERE NO vocalists in the male vocalist nominations. Where's Joe Nichols? Josh Turner? Seems everytime there's a good vocalist, they get pushed aside for whoever has the tightest jeans and strays the furthest from country music. As for the women, Allison is in a whole different league than anyone else...yet still winless. Vocal group was nothing more than Jennifer versus Ronnie...a well deserved win on Jennifers part. If it weren't for Kristian, it would've been an Allison/Jennifer showdown for female vocalist. The only other thing that was really disturbing is that "Big-n-Rich" and "Montgomery Gentry" are nominted for anything other than "biggest joke". Abesence of Tim & Faith was WAYYY overdue. I thought for a second that the CMA was coming to their senses...Tim never had talent and Faith stepped outta her league when she quit being a backup singer.

I just don't get it with Taylor Swift. Every time I've heard her, I think it sounds like a bad Karaoke night. As for the sound of real country music? You can only look at Alan Jackson and George Strait to get any idea of what country music SHOULD sound like instead of the bubblegum country of the teenybobbers. sigh... I really miss Vern Gosdin and Faron Young and Waylon Jennings and so many more. Thank God for XM radio!

King George !!!!!

1) Taylor Swift looked and sounded horrible in her performance. She is not on the scale to win anything yet.
2) Kellie Pickler look horrible. She is no longer cute like she used to be and looked trashy last night.
3) The song "stay" by Jennifer Nettles never should have. The song is alright, but the other competition was better.
4) Anyone who says Kenny Chesney shouldn't get entertainer of the year really needs to go to a concert of his. I love all the people nominated, but Kenny puts on an amazing concert everytime.
5) Miley Cyrus looked so stupid on stage and didn't present well get rid of her-yuck.
6) Carrie Underwood is amazing and very talented and pretty. Anyone who says Taylor Swift should win over her is just jealous and doesn't see talent when it's right in front of them.
7) Shania Twain did look amazing last night..good to see her back.
8) Kid Rock sucked. I am sorry, I love the song, but the whole performance was crap.
9) George Strait is an old star, but still doing wonderful. Album of the year I don't think so, but he is still going strong.
10) I think Brad Paisley is a wonderful artist and his wife just looked so cute last night.
11) I like Martina McBride but I think the outfit was a little to risque for the CMA's and well for her to be wearing. At her age she needs to wear something a little more appropriate.
12) I love alan Jackson and the Good Time performance.
13) Would have loved to see Dierks Bentley, hopefully next year.
14) and to end this I think Luke Bryan should have been the one to win best new artist...sexy and talented. Go seem him in concert you won't be disappointed.

Toby Keith anyone? Talk about getting the shaft year, after year, after year.

53. kristine -
Overall I thought the show was great. I agree with others that the sound was not very good. It was great to see Kenny win entertainer of the year again. I didn't like that Kelly girl nor the way she was dressed.

54. Mark H -
country music lovers actually still watch the CMA awards?

55. chicagoblonde -
I was so looking forward to the show and was mildly dissapointed. Carrie and Brad were not HOT at all as a combo. It was like he was deliberately trying NOT to stand close to her as to not piss off his prego wife. lol ..I agree that the acoustics sucked. I personally think Rodney Akins should have won best new-comer, Taylor Swift is 18 and acts and sings like it....should have started out on American Idol and grew up a little......Kelly Pickler tries TOO hard....Carrie was beautiful, but changed the whole CMA's......why do we have to have movie stars presenting? To bring in NON-country audiences? Nicole Kidman has the personality of a chair leg, but I guess she's entitled to be there because of Keith. Trace should have won song of the year with "youre gonna miss this" . Lot of omissions this year guys. Hope next years show is better.

I was glad to see George Strait win a couple of awards. He's a legend! And still very handsome. Alan Jackson is my absolute favorite. He looks better as he ages! Since he didn't win Male Vocalist, I was glad to see Brad Paisley win. Brad seemed so excited to win and very appreciative. Kenny Chesney is OK, but is a bit overrated in my opinion. I'm ready to see someone else win Entertainer of the Year. I agree that Rascal Flatts should definitely be a contender for Entertainer of the Year. Sugarland is great, but I hate their song, "Stay". Taylor Swift is cute, but she has yet to prove to me that she can really sing anything other than cutesy, juvenile songs. I'd like to hear how she does on a grown-up song with some vocal range (something like Martina would sing). And by the way, I heard Taylor had a problem with her throat last night and was worried about how she'd sound. Trace Adkins was good. Why wasn't he nominated for anything? I knew Carrie Underwood would win Female Vocalist. I think she deserved it, although Martina McBride has the best voice! Toby Keith is great, but he won't do the CMAs. Although I'm not a Kid Rock fan, I do like his song, "All Summer Long". I enjoyed seeing Reese Witherspoon as a presenter. I like Nicole Kidman better with curly hair instead of straight hair. Miranda Lambert is talented, but it's obvious she feels totally uncomfortable in a dress. I was glad to see Randy Travis in the audience. Randy's the whole reason why I became a country music fan. Was it just me or did it seem like there were more performances than awards given out? I cannot stress how much I love Alan Jackson!! He is -- hands down -- the best in country music!! Just my 2 cents worth ...

Something was wrong with the sound on the show. There seemed to be maybe a microphone that was not working right and different people got it all during the show. Could not really hear Kellie's song at all and then someone else would sound fine. Good show Bad sound system.

58. Flatstick -
Carrie Underwood can really sing (the only Idol winner worth anything). Taylor Swift gets a lot of props because she is so young and writes her own songs (a rarity these days). The sound on TV was bad - hard to hear vocals. Chesney is a great live performer but the reggea thing was pretty weird. Not impressed with Mr. Otto - his song or his voice (is that why no band wanted to be seen on stage with him?). One redeeming factor limited Brooks and Dunn coverage this year.

59. Yahoo! Music User -
Jeff Bates is the best country singer of all time; why doesn't he ever get on these shows?

60. Dolores -
Key word here is COUNTRY!!!!!! Not rock or rap but Country. I agree where are all the country greats over 30. Very disappointing except for a few. The song is right there has been Murder on Music Row.

AP
Tue Dec 29, 2009 6:45am PST

AP - Lil Wayne emerged as a top-selling musician known for his clever wordplay and risque lyrics, but like rappers before him, he's staring down a year behind bars at the peak of his career. The artist returned to his … More »
