The 2008 CMA Awards

Posted Wed Nov 12, 2008 9:19pm PST by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

With very little surprises as to the nominees, the CMA Awards generally serve as a feast for fashion commentary (see here for more on that) and/or a slate of commentary on presenters or performers. We'll cut to the chase. Here's our take on who won versus who should have won. (Sometimes the two coincide!) Read on, country music lovers.

The big ‘un: Entertainer of the year. Kenny Chesney won this one again, and we'll start out our commentary on a positive note. He should win this award. Yes, he keeps winning it, which is a bit boring...but realistically, Kenny runs circles around the competition in this category. Editorial note: Why is Sugarland nominated here and not Rascal Flatts? Why is Brad Paisley nominated but not Tim McGraw? For the umpteenth time, where are the chicks in this category, save Jennifer Nettles? Is it worth it to even ask these basic and oft-repeated questions?

Male Vocalist of the Year: Kenny Chesney is THE vocalist of the year, but Brad Paisley is a fair decision here. George Strait is awesome but has been dialing it in for a while now. Keith Urban is too Hollywood boy and his wife talks too much about him in hushed terms in Vogue magazine-type articles. Alan Jackson made a credible shot at things this year with a great album and some humor (see "Good Time" video), but Brad still can goofball it up over him and hang out with Kellie Pickler and Taylor Swift and Andy Griffith.

Female Vocalist of the Year: Carrie Underwood. Analysis needed? Alison Krauss has the power of Zep, but nobody reading In Style or People really wants to speculate on who she's dating or what she's wearing, or what color nailpolish she's got on. Taylor Swift has-well, had-the power of Camp Rock, but perhaps that worked against her. Miranda Lambert is saucy and hot and talented, but your Aunt Jane in Florida doesn't know who she is. Martina hangs in there year after year, and she's lovely, but, whatever. Result? Carrie. Fine choice. Where's Faith Hill? She looked GREAT on the cover of Shape, dang it.

New Artist of the Year: Everyone in this category is immensely talented and fun to look at and listen to, but Lady Antebellum stands out as...well...the actual newest in a category dedicated to new. We here at Y! Music have dedicated considerable time and love already to the talents of Jason Aldean, James Otto, Rodney Atkins, and godloveusofcourse Kellie Pickler. (To be fair, we have also championed Lady A. But just weighing things on a timely scale.)

Vocal Group: Rascal Flatts won, as they should-but, why the hell does this group keep getting shafted? They are so beyond "vocal group." They are in the Kenny territory, for crying out loud. And, they've won this Group award like 80 times in a row by now. Should be ready to graduate to a bigger league, no? And, in all fairness, this blogger is still annoyed that they were beat out for a Grammy by the fracking Dixie Chicks for that mediocre anti-Bush song that nobody gives a crap about anymore, which seems especially forgettable a statement now that Obama is president elect and everyone's in a good mood.

Vocal Duo: Sugarland. Shallow note: Jennifer Nettles sure had a beautiful dress on-outdoing even Keith Urbans's famously fashionable wife. But, oooh, is Brooks & Dunn rolling in their graves? Er, shaking in their shoes, that is? (In a cynical mood tonight, sorry.) What is this Wreckers nomination, while we are being cynical?

Single of the Year: George Strait. Mmmm, I was feeling the Kenny track a bit more, but I suppose since Ken won the big award that they had to spread the love a bit.

Album of the Year: George Strait again. No! Sorry. This one should have gone to Carrie Underwood, hook, line, and sinker. I won't even concede to George's legendary status here or the need to respect it. THE one country album that everyone, even country haters, was talking about (well, besides Jessica Simpson's) was Carrie's. This is a shaft.

Song of the Year: Well, I suppose this was a fairly evenly divided category. I felt both "Stay" and "Good Time" hit harder in terms of video, and the rest were an evenly divided match. So no real strong feelings on this particular category.

Musical event of the year: Alison Krauss and Robert Plant-okay, cool, fair enough. I prefer "Shiftwork," personally on a pure country-music basis, but recognize that Robert Plant doesn't just commit himself like this for nothing.

Music Video: Andy Griffith is a totally unfair advantage. But this was deserved. Even though Alan Jackson's line-dancing record actually did fool us into thinking it was, well, real! Fo' real. In fact, we even called his peeps to do some fact checking on whether the record was actually broken. (The coffeemaker was broken that day...okay?)

Until next year, signing off with a nod to Nashville and a tip of the hat. And, a prayer of thanks for being able to watch an event that hosts both Kid Rock AND Nicole Kidman.

I love Carrie Underwood. She is pure country and has never strayed.
So many of the new ones are not country.
It really must be a disapointment to the Great American country singers.Toby Keith should be up for some reward. He has a UNIQUE voice.Love Toby.Tim,Allen, and the rest of the crew!!!!

Since when do country singers wear earrings (Jason Aldean) you look like you should have been in the movie Brokeback Mountain.

83. Brenda -
LOVE LOVE THE EAGLES!!!!!!!! I like Miss Underwood to but you are right. Where was Faith and Tim? Where was Amy Grant her hubby was there. Where was Miss Lynn?
Where were all of the old timers? I love Trac's Song he sang. He is so cool and Tall! I wanna hug from him :-). Brooks & Dunn did not look happy nor did some of other guys sitting in the front row. When Jason Aldean "sang" I muted the TV. The new people coming into country really did try to hard and messed up really bad. I guess the party started 3 days ago that is wh the sound was off, the jokes were off, CMA was off. It is almost like being or watching the MTV awards and they suck.

to me i don't think kenny should have won entertainer of the year. i feel the first two times that he won it, he deserved it, but not now. i feel it should have gone to either brad or keith. rascal flatts should definitely have been in there, because sugarland sucks and i don't even think they were in the top 10 for country tours or in general...rascal flatts sure were and i believe they beat out kenny as well! i'm still upset that leann wolmack won album of the year in 2005 and not rascal flatts. her album wasn't even in the top 40 and rascal flatts i believe were in the top 3!

damn [profane]en politics!!!

so sick of carrie. i feel taylor swift had a bigger year and should have won. whatever, hopefully taylor can keep going and beat out carrie next year!

next year rascal flatts better be up for more than one award and win more than one.

Im not a country music fan but I know enough to realize that all of our music is being destroyed by corporate money grubbing radio stations/producers & hollywood likes. Nothing is true anymore, just a well thought out plan to make money & make untalented pretty people mega icons by shoving them down our throats on television. Its nice to see most of you see through this garbage. The rest of you--if they promoted"poop on a stick that makes you look hip"--all of you would be in line for it.SUCKERS

Today's country music is 70's pop

I just have to say from someone in the Country music business, you're way off doll. Obviously not a true country music fan...sadly the COUNTRY music is being taken over by a lot of Country POP crap. Most of what you saw last night is NOT real Country, if that were the case, Taylor Swift would not be allowed to call herself a Country music singer.

I have to disagree with you on a lot of points here. AND Kenny is way over-rated. He can entertain, but as far as the complete package, He is not. He has a few good songs, yes, but, Male Vocalist definatly needed to go to Brad. Better vocals, better writing, better playing. BAR NONE.

It's sad that all those incredible songs from legends who paved the way with what real Country music should be, are being replaced by Country-Pop. Such a shame!

I think that George Strait should have won hands down. And I do like carrie Undewood, I am so sick of Taylor Swift.GEORGE STRAIT RULES!!!!!!!!

89. Robert A -
I've been told by a couple artists that the sound is never good on a network live show. Many of them sounded off pitch just a hair and thats usually a monitor problem.

90. Pat Y -
hey that was not cmt,,it was rock and bad at that,,,get back to the basic,,,lady who?,,,were is country in all this,,,thank god for alan and george,,,if the punks want to rock,,,get there on show,,,,,

I don't know who is responsable for the music being so loud. You couldn't hear the words of the songs. The bands were to loud. I am sure that these people have beautiful voices if you could just hear them. As for Carrie, I don't think she had full reign on the outfits she wore. I have seen others that have hosted and they, ladies of course, have had several dress changes. There is always someone who decides what is going to be done on the show.
As for the same ones getting the award, they two will have to take a back seat sometime as others come along. I do feel that Country Music has lost to a more rock flavor. I don't care for it as much as i used to.

WOW, Your clueless,

The King totally deserves his awards!!! and Kenny was given a gift for that song and Brad should of won the Entertainer award! It wasn't even close for female, Carrie deserves her awards also, hey if your not at her level then don't complain,, because she rocks!

93. Buster B -
The CMA is political, as everything else is. This is why you didn't see Toby, Tim, or Dierks. What about Montgomery-Gentry, also. If you write, sing, or believe in anything which is not politically correct, YOU'RE OUT! Taylor Swift cannot sing, although nice to look at. She must have great marketing people!! Shania was nice as well!!!

94. Yahoo! Music User -
You clearly don't know the first thing about REAL country music. The CMA stuck with the safest, most boring nominees they could think of. Carrie, Female Vocalist of the Year? Kenny, Entertainer of the Year? BORING. How about give it to someone deserving...aka Sugarland. They are true singer-songwriters and put out absolutely outstanding music. Rascal Flatts and Tayor Swift are an embarrassment to country music. They are talentless pop singers and have no place in the country industry.

"this blogger is still annoyed that they were beat out for a Grammy by the fracking Dixie Chicks for that mediocre anti-Bush song that nobody gives a crap about anymore..." Are you KIDDING me?!? The Dixie Chicks deserve every single grammy they have earned. To even imply that Rascal Flatts are more deserving or talented honestly makes me vomit.

Please stick to what you know, which obviously isn't country music.

95. Raymond -
I agree with most on here, Taylor Swift CANNOT sing and who ever told her that she could lied to the poor girl. George Strait is about the only county singer that I will pay money to go see and buy a CD. He deserves all the awards he can get. I am sick of Kenny and his Island music..we have Jimmy Buffet that is enough...

96. -
you wouild think for an awards show they would get the sound right!!, they obviously spent a bunch on stage props, maybe if they did it at the Ryman and made sure it wasn't a popularity contest but really a music show there would have been some different faces up there.Yay for the newcomers, but who built the house they,re livin' in. And why do the bands look like punk rockers in a COUNTRY SHOW
I love the music , but come on man!!! ps it's hard i mean hard to make the "Eagles" sound mediocre but they did it...... BCS

97. Nana -
Anyone who believes Kenny C. is a better entertainer than Keith Urban is just plain wrong and must not have ever seen them both in concerts (which is where their entertainment skills should be judged). Keith is not only an amazing singer, he's also an incredible guitarist, pianist and performer. Kenny may be able to get people stirred up in an alcohol-induced frenzy, but Keith truely connects with his audience and provides the most amazing experience for those who attend his shows.

98. RP -
I was disappointed that Trace or Brad didn't win for their nominated songs. I hated Kellie Pickler's dominatrix out fit and her song was definitely NOT COUNTRY, not even a good cross over.

99. Cindy -
George Strait is the best male vocalist and should win this award. He runs circles around Kenny "Can you sing about something other than the beach?" Chesney or anyone else for that matter. Give Kenny the Entertainer of the Year, but George is the best vocalist, bar none!

100. j -
I agree with last night being disapointing and where has the country sound gone. The singers always do sound off at these award shows and there are SO MANY other outstanding performers who do so much more work then Chesney and Underwood ANY GIVEN YEAR like TOBY KEITH who put out a movie he acted in, and produced he also put out the soundtrack for this movie another awesome album, a new video not to mention the shows he does around the country BUT MOST OF ALL his show he does yearly if not more for the soldiers fighting for our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. That is country and these are the people we should be aknowledgeing and paying tribute to in award shows. Last nights people have had there days next year let's award those who work THE HARDEST!!!!!!
