The 2008 CMA Awards

Posted Wed Nov 12, 2008 9:19pm PST by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

With very little surprises as to the nominees, the CMA Awards generally serve as a feast for fashion commentary (see here for more on that) and/or a slate of commentary on presenters or performers. We'll cut to the chase. Here's our take on who won versus who should have won. (Sometimes the two coincide!) Read on, country music lovers.

The big ‘un: Entertainer of the year. Kenny Chesney won this one again, and we'll start out our commentary on a positive note. He should win this award. Yes, he keeps winning it, which is a bit boring...but realistically, Kenny runs circles around the competition in this category. Editorial note: Why is Sugarland nominated here and not Rascal Flatts? Why is Brad Paisley nominated but not Tim McGraw? For the umpteenth time, where are the chicks in this category, save Jennifer Nettles? Is it worth it to even ask these basic and oft-repeated questions?

Male Vocalist of the Year: Kenny Chesney is THE vocalist of the year, but Brad Paisley is a fair decision here. George Strait is awesome but has been dialing it in for a while now. Keith Urban is too Hollywood boy and his wife talks too much about him in hushed terms in Vogue magazine-type articles. Alan Jackson made a credible shot at things this year with a great album and some humor (see "Good Time" video), but Brad still can goofball it up over him and hang out with Kellie Pickler and Taylor Swift and Andy Griffith.

Female Vocalist of the Year: Carrie Underwood. Analysis needed? Alison Krauss has the power of Zep, but nobody reading In Style or People really wants to speculate on who she's dating or what she's wearing, or what color nailpolish she's got on. Taylor Swift has-well, had-the power of Camp Rock, but perhaps that worked against her. Miranda Lambert is saucy and hot and talented, but your Aunt Jane in Florida doesn't know who she is. Martina hangs in there year after year, and she's lovely, but, whatever. Result? Carrie. Fine choice. Where's Faith Hill? She looked GREAT on the cover of Shape, dang it.

New Artist of the Year: Everyone in this category is immensely talented and fun to look at and listen to, but Lady Antebellum stands out as...well...the actual newest in a category dedicated to new. We here at Y! Music have dedicated considerable time and love already to the talents of Jason Aldean, James Otto, Rodney Atkins, and godloveusofcourse Kellie Pickler. (To be fair, we have also championed Lady A. But just weighing things on a timely scale.)

Vocal Group: Rascal Flatts won, as they should-but, why the hell does this group keep getting shafted? They are so beyond "vocal group." They are in the Kenny territory, for crying out loud. And, they've won this Group award like 80 times in a row by now. Should be ready to graduate to a bigger league, no? And, in all fairness, this blogger is still annoyed that they were beat out for a Grammy by the fracking Dixie Chicks for that mediocre anti-Bush song that nobody gives a crap about anymore, which seems especially forgettable a statement now that Obama is president elect and everyone's in a good mood.

Vocal Duo: Sugarland. Shallow note: Jennifer Nettles sure had a beautiful dress on-outdoing even Keith Urbans's famously fashionable wife. But, oooh, is Brooks & Dunn rolling in their graves? Er, shaking in their shoes, that is? (In a cynical mood tonight, sorry.) What is this Wreckers nomination, while we are being cynical?

Single of the Year: George Strait. Mmmm, I was feeling the Kenny track a bit more, but I suppose since Ken won the big award that they had to spread the love a bit.

Album of the Year: George Strait again. No! Sorry. This one should have gone to Carrie Underwood, hook, line, and sinker. I won't even concede to George's legendary status here or the need to respect it. THE one country album that everyone, even country haters, was talking about (well, besides Jessica Simpson's) was Carrie's. This is a shaft.

Song of the Year: Well, I suppose this was a fairly evenly divided category. I felt both "Stay" and "Good Time" hit harder in terms of video, and the rest were an evenly divided match. So no real strong feelings on this particular category.

Musical event of the year: Alison Krauss and Robert Plant-okay, cool, fair enough. I prefer "Shiftwork," personally on a pure country-music basis, but recognize that Robert Plant doesn't just commit himself like this for nothing.

Music Video: Andy Griffith is a totally unfair advantage. But this was deserved. Even though Alan Jackson's line-dancing record actually did fool us into thinking it was, well, real! Fo' real. In fact, we even called his peeps to do some fact checking on whether the record was actually broken. (The coffeemaker was broken that day...okay?)

Until next year, signing off with a nod to Nashville and a tip of the hat. And, a prayer of thanks for being able to watch an event that hosts both Kid Rock AND Nicole Kidman.

Today's "country" music sounds alot like the 60's rock and roll. I'm sorry but Taylor Swift can't carry a tune in a bucket and sounded bad this year and last year. It's an insult for her to be nominating amongst people that can actually sing. 90% of the artists sound off-key anymore - that's because they can't actually sing either...it's all technology that helps them out. In the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's no one sounded bad at the CMA's...because they could actually sing....for the last 5 or 6 years it's been this way. Record companies are signing pretty, cute and sexy and buzzing up their voice on the recordings and when it's time to go live they suck.

I thought it was somewhat disrespectful that the 2008 inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame were given nothing more than a lightening-fast mention. In my opinion, all four inductees deserve more praise than the vast majority of acts featured on this year's CMA's.

the cma "awards" show has become just a performance by country stars
and hollywood types, with big production numbers, all form no substance.
when someone is inducted into the country music hall of fame they deserve more than a 2 second still pic; formerly they were treated with the respect they deserve. And as for song of the year, dear blogger, you are clueless in this category since it has NOTHING at all to do with videos! Geesh. Its about the song dummy, i.e., words & music, nothing more. This category gets short shrift these days as well since each song used to be performed. country music is changing and not for the better

I thought either "Gun Powder and Lead" or "Stay" should have won Song of the Year and Miranda should have won Female Vocalist. I've seen both Kenny and Brad in concert and Brad could have easily brought home Entertainer of the Year. He's a hoot and a lot of fun to watch!

What the hell do you know? George Strait is the king and should have won. Where does Yahoo get the dumb a%%*% that writes these columns? Hey Yahoo, fire these writers!

I was excited to watch this year. My local radio station was nominated for best morning show, and we are in KC not Nashville. I thought the show was an awards show. Everybody puts on their nice clothes and plays nice for a little while. I LOVED seeing Shania Twain at the end. Why is nobody talking about her? She was classy, beautiful, and absolutely radiant. She wears divorce well. That is what country is about, very diverse with a sound or look for everyone!!!

Several folks asked whatever happened to real country music. What happened is that many of the current "stars" are wannabe 'rock stars' with the long haired, pierced, ripped up jeans wearing men & platform stilletto wearing women.
That is why so many are so selective in what country we listen to today.

Reece Witherspoon should have hosted the show. She was the only one who actually looked normal while talking on stage.

I enjoyed the show. I thought Carrie was the best. I am so sick of Kenny I could spit. I have never thought much of him and somehow he keeps winning. Most of the girls dressed like trash and sure didn't look country. Keith and his wife are all hollywood not country. Good job to Brad at least his songs have a little redneck country in them. Alan looked hot as always..

HALF OF THOSE PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE ONE OUNCE OF THE TALENT THE EAGLES HAVE...THEY HAVE BEEN ON TOP FOR OVER 30 YEARS

Personally, I loved Carries 10,000 dresses ! She is a beauty. I think she deserved album of the year. Martina still has a great voice, but her outfit was not appropriate for her age! Taylor Swift needs to stick to writing songs not singing. on second thought the song she wrote for Kellie Pickler wasn't very good. And I have seen Kellie look much better. She looked like trash and I was afraid that at any minute we were going to see right up her dress!

GEORGE STRAIT Keep on singing and doing those great shows. He is a mans man. boy would I love to have him hug me and then some....................Blushing......

134. OneVoice -
And another thing......where do they get off putting Kid Rock and Lil Wayne ANYWHERE into country music!! Puh-lease!

Jennifer Nettles is awesome and I feel she is so much more than alot of the female artists these days. I love Martina but when was the last time she had a song out??? Why would she even be nominated? Same goes for the Wreckers?? They arent even together anymore from what I hear. Maybe I am wrong on that.
Brooks and Dunn will always rule but I do bbelieve it was time someone else won duo of tthe year. Way to go... Sugarland!

Taylor Swift can't sing a lick, and surprisingly as shown in the fantastic opening number neither can Keith Urban. But hey--they're cute, and that's all that matters these days in Cm. What CM really needs is more blonde babes that can't sing

I missed the show, but can't say I'm surprised by the discussion. "Country" has become the catch-all for pop, southern rock, even caribbean-influenced pop thanks to Kenny Chesney. I honestly don't mind the influences, but if we are honestly looking at country music as a genre, much of what received awards was not truly country. I do agree that many artists are way too influenced by how they look for the media, instead of how they sound to their fans, but there are still some real talented artists out there. Taylor Swift has writing talent, and thought she obviously gets help with her sound in the studio, the potential is there. People put her down because of her appeal to a younger crowd, but I respect her for being a decent role model for them. (Yes, I have young daughters!) Unfortunately, many great songs and artists missed recognition: Trace Adkins, Jason Aldean, Trent Wilmon, Blake Shelton....I could go on, but you get the point. I wish the CMAs would quit trying to "glam up" like Hollywood and go back to representing country America!

"Obama is president elect and everyone's in a good mood." Speak for yourself.. I was interested in the article until I got to that line...

Why do the males all wear those cowboy hats while performing?. They never wear spurs or chaps like authentic cowboys were known for. Perhaps they should wear real country folks outfits..... denim overalls, straw hats, red bandanas and the like??!!

139. Eldridge -
I was a little upset with the quality of the performances last night. I'm not a big fan of the "Start a Band" song. The mics didn't seem to be working right and the sound was horrible. I usually only watch the CMAs to watch them sing. This year didn't have very many good songs. And I don't care what everybody else thinks, Kenny Chesney is alright, but not awesome.
Plus, some of those outfits the girls wore were horrible choices.

I was very disappointed with Taylor Swifts' performance. Did she hear herself? That was just awful. Country has taken such a turn that is really shouldn't be classified as "country music" anymore. More like Poptry music or something. I loved the performance by Brooks & Dunn with Reba. THEY are country music. Brad did great as always, but I agree with everyone else as Carrie is a bit washed up. I hope next years awards actually award prizes to people who have earned them and not because they are the thing at the moment.
