The 2008 CMA Awards

Posted Wed Nov 12, 2008 9:19pm PST by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

With very little surprises as to the nominees, the CMA Awards generally serve as a feast for fashion commentary (see here for more on that) and/or a slate of commentary on presenters or performers. We'll cut to the chase. Here's our take on who won versus who should have won. (Sometimes the two coincide!) Read on, country music lovers.

The big ‘un: Entertainer of the year. Kenny Chesney won this one again, and we'll start out our commentary on a positive note. He should win this award. Yes, he keeps winning it, which is a bit boring...but realistically, Kenny runs circles around the competition in this category. Editorial note: Why is Sugarland nominated here and not Rascal Flatts? Why is Brad Paisley nominated but not Tim McGraw? For the umpteenth time, where are the chicks in this category, save Jennifer Nettles? Is it worth it to even ask these basic and oft-repeated questions?

Male Vocalist of the Year: Kenny Chesney is THE vocalist of the year, but Brad Paisley is a fair decision here. George Strait is awesome but has been dialing it in for a while now. Keith Urban is too Hollywood boy and his wife talks too much about him in hushed terms in Vogue magazine-type articles. Alan Jackson made a credible shot at things this year with a great album and some humor (see "Good Time" video), but Brad still can goofball it up over him and hang out with Kellie Pickler and Taylor Swift and Andy Griffith.

Female Vocalist of the Year: Carrie Underwood. Analysis needed? Alison Krauss has the power of Zep, but nobody reading In Style or People really wants to speculate on who she's dating or what she's wearing, or what color nailpolish she's got on. Taylor Swift has-well, had-the power of Camp Rock, but perhaps that worked against her. Miranda Lambert is saucy and hot and talented, but your Aunt Jane in Florida doesn't know who she is. Martina hangs in there year after year, and she's lovely, but, whatever. Result? Carrie. Fine choice. Where's Faith Hill? She looked GREAT on the cover of Shape, dang it.

New Artist of the Year: Everyone in this category is immensely talented and fun to look at and listen to, but Lady Antebellum stands out as...well...the actual newest in a category dedicated to new. We here at Y! Music have dedicated considerable time and love already to the talents of Jason Aldean, James Otto, Rodney Atkins, and godloveusofcourse Kellie Pickler. (To be fair, we have also championed Lady A. But just weighing things on a timely scale.)

Vocal Group: Rascal Flatts won, as they should-but, why the hell does this group keep getting shafted? They are so beyond "vocal group." They are in the Kenny territory, for crying out loud. And, they've won this Group award like 80 times in a row by now. Should be ready to graduate to a bigger league, no? And, in all fairness, this blogger is still annoyed that they were beat out for a Grammy by the fracking Dixie Chicks for that mediocre anti-Bush song that nobody gives a crap about anymore, which seems especially forgettable a statement now that Obama is president elect and everyone's in a good mood.

Vocal Duo: Sugarland. Shallow note: Jennifer Nettles sure had a beautiful dress on-outdoing even Keith Urbans's famously fashionable wife. But, oooh, is Brooks & Dunn rolling in their graves? Er, shaking in their shoes, that is? (In a cynical mood tonight, sorry.) What is this Wreckers nomination, while we are being cynical?

Single of the Year: George Strait. Mmmm, I was feeling the Kenny track a bit more, but I suppose since Ken won the big award that they had to spread the love a bit.

Album of the Year: George Strait again. No! Sorry. This one should have gone to Carrie Underwood, hook, line, and sinker. I won't even concede to George's legendary status here or the need to respect it. THE one country album that everyone, even country haters, was talking about (well, besides Jessica Simpson's) was Carrie's. This is a shaft.

Song of the Year: Well, I suppose this was a fairly evenly divided category. I felt both "Stay" and "Good Time" hit harder in terms of video, and the rest were an evenly divided match. So no real strong feelings on this particular category.

Musical event of the year: Alison Krauss and Robert Plant-okay, cool, fair enough. I prefer "Shiftwork," personally on a pure country-music basis, but recognize that Robert Plant doesn't just commit himself like this for nothing.

Music Video: Andy Griffith is a totally unfair advantage. But this was deserved. Even though Alan Jackson's line-dancing record actually did fool us into thinking it was, well, real! Fo' real. In fact, we even called his peeps to do some fact checking on whether the record was actually broken. (The coffeemaker was broken that day...okay?)

Until next year, signing off with a nod to Nashville and a tip of the hat. And, a prayer of thanks for being able to watch an event that hosts both Kid Rock AND Nicole Kidman.

WOAH Danica, Don't dare diss the Eagles! Half of the music world branches off of their sound (not just country). You may not like it, but at least show some respect.

I agree with the fact that Carrie Underwood is forced down our throats..She is an awesome singer and I love her music but, I think it is time to hear someone else for a change..As far as Taylor Swift goes she is adorable but I do not think singing is her calling she is not very good to me although I know teenagers love her...Martina Mcbride is as i alway say the Celine Dion of country music..awesome voice....

The show was good for an awards show. Sound is never very good, and some people try to hard, like Kellie Pickler, what was up with her. The worst vocals and look of the night. As for Carrie, she is awsome, and when you look like her, why not wear 7 outfits. Martina sings so well, and the guys are all great. We all have things we like and things we don't, that's what makes it interesting.

WHEN YOU START TALKING COUNTRY AND LEAVING OUT HAGGARD AND JONES AND NELSON AND ALL THE SINGERS WHO HAVE PASSION AND TELL REAL STORIES INSTEAD OF THE PROCESSED CRAP ON RADIO - WELL - YOU ARE NOT TALKING COUNTTRY AND NONE OF THE PEOPLE YOU MENTION HOLD A CANDLE TO THE REAL COUNTRY SINGERS!!!

WHAT Country were these "awards" for ??? France....Denmark....Germany ??? SUCKED. Most voices were BAADD......look was hooker not country. I like Kid Rock...butt country, NO. I had to turn it off. Bad television. Bad "country"

I listen to all kinds of music, but when I listen to country, I want to hear country. Not island music by Kenny Chesney or soft rock from Kid Rock. I won't even mention Lil Wayne. And what in the world does Reese Witherspoon have to do with it?

Country music has gone funk, trashy and hard to listen to. Give me the good old standards and people who had a little class. CMT was travelling down the wrong road and fans everywhere should let them know it.

Taylor Swift is a teenage ho-look-a-like and sounded like she looks. She has sucked everytime I have heard her.Kids love her and that is the only reason she is still here. Underwood is awesome..Pickler is awsome but sounded bad last night. If you dont like George Straight, u dont like country music..even he sounded crappy last night. Chesney has good music, but Rascal Flatts should have won.

149. PORKCHOP -
The sound was AWFUL!! Music was drowning out the vocals and you could hear the mics hitting stuff!!! Wow.. poorly put together.

150. izzybear -
first of all i like country music, i liked the show except for Kid ROCK and sugarland. why are they even up.Rascal Flatts are a lot better then Sugarland. Kelly Pickler looked like a hooker

What ever happened to good ole country music,
WHERE A PERSON COULD UNDERSTAND THE WORDS, and the music had a pleasant rhythm.

THE ONLY THING WORSE THAN HAS BEEN COUNTRY SINGERS IS RAPPERS...WHY DO THEY USE RAP AND SING IN THE SAME BREATH..

153. Lisa H -
What was up with the stage performances? All the singers sounded awful! Whoever was doing the soundwork on this show should be fired.

I agree CMA sucked this year big time.Brad Paisley kissing his wifes belly was a tear jerker, but so was the song Carrie sang that the soldiers wife introduced. Best parts all night. I heard Toby Keith say he's done withthe CMA's cause they have screwed him out of awards. Wonder what they think now that he's released a new album and its taking off like crazy. They need to re-evaluate their ideas as far as requirements go that causes these awards to be given. And they need to hire professional sound people for such an awards show. No one that sang sounded good enough for me to run out and buy any new released albums. A wasted night as far a im concerned. Oh, Ill watch next year. But if it starts out as bad as it was this year, Ill be clickin off!!!

Carrie Underwood looked wonderful for all you haters out there. The Eagles looked horrible but sounded good. Brooks and Dunn with Reba was fantastic!!!! Kid Rock gave the show a lift it needed even if he is not country. Hootie sounded Great.I love George Strait as much as the next person, but come on, Give him something but that was too much.

Taylor Swift's voice is so heavily edited in the studio that it's unrecognizable from the real thing. I'm saying that after having been to one of her concerts. She is truly nothing more than a pretty face and will soon fade from the scene.

Sugarland keeps winning the Duo award? They are not even a Duo. Gotta admit Jennifer's voice is great, but that other guy doesn't even sing, let alone play an instrument that is vital to the song they are performing. Major diss to both Brooks and Dunn, and Montgomery Gentry...

158. Ann -
I absolutely agree about the acoustics! The music overpowered the artists. I really wanted to see Kenny & George on stage together with "Shift Work". OH well, maybe next year. OH! "Best New Artist"- Lady Antebellum is a group, if everyone noticed Artist is in singular form. JASON ALDEAN BABY ALL THE WAY!!!! There's your best new artist!ABC could/should have done a little better with the whole nine yards...

good for George Strait's awards- he's worthy of all he gets. Its time for Kenny to move on- good grief- he;s not the only entertainer to share his talent. The young girls up for awards have not pd their dues- the older entertainers have- where was Faith or Reba or
Trish ? why were they not in the running? BBrad P. STINKS!!!!AS A HOST AND SINGER!!!!

160. its me -
George Strait deserved every award he got to those who disagree you're no country!

Are you out of your mind. He has not wrote a single hit he buys them.
