The 2008 CMA Awards

Posted Wed Nov 12, 2008 9:19pm PST by Wendy Geller in And The Winner Is...

With very little surprises as to the nominees, the CMA Awards generally serve as a feast for fashion commentary (see here for more on that) and/or a slate of commentary on presenters or performers. We'll cut to the chase. Here's our take on who won versus who should have won. (Sometimes the two coincide!) Read on, country music lovers.

The big ‘un: Entertainer of the year. Kenny Chesney won this one again, and we'll start out our commentary on a positive note. He should win this award. Yes, he keeps winning it, which is a bit boring...but realistically, Kenny runs circles around the competition in this category. Editorial note: Why is Sugarland nominated here and not Rascal Flatts? Why is Brad Paisley nominated but not Tim McGraw? For the umpteenth time, where are the chicks in this category, save Jennifer Nettles? Is it worth it to even ask these basic and oft-repeated questions?

Male Vocalist of the Year: Kenny Chesney is THE vocalist of the year, but Brad Paisley is a fair decision here. George Strait is awesome but has been dialing it in for a while now. Keith Urban is too Hollywood boy and his wife talks too much about him in hushed terms in Vogue magazine-type articles. Alan Jackson made a credible shot at things this year with a great album and some humor (see "Good Time" video), but Brad still can goofball it up over him and hang out with Kellie Pickler and Taylor Swift and Andy Griffith.

Female Vocalist of the Year: Carrie Underwood. Analysis needed? Alison Krauss has the power of Zep, but nobody reading In Style or People really wants to speculate on who she's dating or what she's wearing, or what color nailpolish she's got on. Taylor Swift has-well, had-the power of Camp Rock, but perhaps that worked against her. Miranda Lambert is saucy and hot and talented, but your Aunt Jane in Florida doesn't know who she is. Martina hangs in there year after year, and she's lovely, but, whatever. Result? Carrie. Fine choice. Where's Faith Hill? She looked GREAT on the cover of Shape, dang it.

New Artist of the Year: Everyone in this category is immensely talented and fun to look at and listen to, but Lady Antebellum stands out as...well...the actual newest in a category dedicated to new. We here at Y! Music have dedicated considerable time and love already to the talents of Jason Aldean, James Otto, Rodney Atkins, and godloveusofcourse Kellie Pickler. (To be fair, we have also championed Lady A. But just weighing things on a timely scale.)

Vocal Group: Rascal Flatts won, as they should-but, why the hell does this group keep getting shafted? They are so beyond "vocal group." They are in the Kenny territory, for crying out loud. And, they've won this Group award like 80 times in a row by now. Should be ready to graduate to a bigger league, no? And, in all fairness, this blogger is still annoyed that they were beat out for a Grammy by the fracking Dixie Chicks for that mediocre anti-Bush song that nobody gives a crap about anymore, which seems especially forgettable a statement now that Obama is president elect and everyone's in a good mood.

Vocal Duo: Sugarland. Shallow note: Jennifer Nettles sure had a beautiful dress on-outdoing even Keith Urbans's famously fashionable wife. But, oooh, is Brooks & Dunn rolling in their graves? Er, shaking in their shoes, that is? (In a cynical mood tonight, sorry.) What is this Wreckers nomination, while we are being cynical?

Single of the Year: George Strait. Mmmm, I was feeling the Kenny track a bit more, but I suppose since Ken won the big award that they had to spread the love a bit.

Album of the Year: George Strait again. No! Sorry. This one should have gone to Carrie Underwood, hook, line, and sinker. I won't even concede to George's legendary status here or the need to respect it. THE one country album that everyone, even country haters, was talking about (well, besides Jessica Simpson's) was Carrie's. This is a shaft.

Song of the Year: Well, I suppose this was a fairly evenly divided category. I felt both "Stay" and "Good Time" hit harder in terms of video, and the rest were an evenly divided match. So no real strong feelings on this particular category.

Musical event of the year: Alison Krauss and Robert Plant-okay, cool, fair enough. I prefer "Shiftwork," personally on a pure country-music basis, but recognize that Robert Plant doesn't just commit himself like this for nothing.

Music Video: Andy Griffith is a totally unfair advantage. But this was deserved. Even though Alan Jackson's line-dancing record actually did fool us into thinking it was, well, real! Fo' real. In fact, we even called his peeps to do some fact checking on whether the record was actually broken. (The coffeemaker was broken that day...okay?)

Until next year, signing off with a nod to Nashville and a tip of the hat. And, a prayer of thanks for being able to watch an event that hosts both Kid Rock AND Nicole Kidman.

Once again, the CMAs practice discrimination to an ugly degree. If George Strait, who has only been recording since the early 1980s, is presented as the token "elder statesman", then country is still the victim of myopia in blowing off its living legends. Artists like Bill Anderson, Merle Haggard (get well soon!), George Jones, Dolly Parton and Ray Price are still very much active and still cranking out vital records. Yet not a word about them. No nominations. Nothing. That is flat out and out age discrimination. I would have expected flavor of the month mentality out of other genres, but not this one. Pathetic.

I have watched the CMA awards every year this is the first time I have been bored, I agree with the rest of the people that lots of the country greats were not present, I was disappointed not seeing Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Toby Keith who is one of the best country singers, most of the ones on last night were wanabe's sorry but that's how I felt. And the dresses someof them wore looked like there were picked out at the Salvation Army, Carrie Underwood only wore a few that I thought looked classy, and Miley Cyrus you could put her back stage and leave her there with her Dad. Hope next year is way better and bring back Reba or Brooks & Dunn to present the awards!!!!!

Let me just say I really enjoyed the CMA's. Everyone that received an award did definitely deserve it. CARRIE UNDERWOOD is amazing and will always be. George, Brad, Rascal Flatts, etc.. they are all truly amazing singers. Whoever says there are not, are really not true fans of country music. I did miss some of the older country performers, but all in all it was great. If it wasn't for up and coming people, where would country music go next. BTW, nothing is wrong with changing your outfits. I think Carrie looked stunning and I loved seeing the changes! She was the host for crying out loud! N yes I do agree that Taylor Swifts performance was definitely not her best.

Thanks

The CMA's could have been called the RMA (rock music awards),come on now, we need a little more country..and, as beautiful as Carrie Underwood is, she should have had on maybe 2 outfits. In case she is unaware, the country is in a economic crisis, maybe some of the money for those dresses could have gone to a food bank, it would have fed alot of hungry children.

Just opinions, but here it goes...

Yes, the acoustics were off. They did not do the artists justice and somebody needs to up their career training.

No, Taylor Swift should not have won. Is she pretty? Sure. Is it cool that she writes her own stuff, which is a rarity in todays day and age? Sure. She is probably a really nice girl, but she needs to stick to songwriting and get off the stage.

Martina McBride has a fantastic voice, but she didn't do much this year, plain and simple.

Don't know if you've noticed folks, but there's alot of great artists who simply can't pull off live performances. I don't think MB sounded that great, even though she's a seasoned performer with a fantastic voice.

No, Tim McGraw shouldn't have won anything. He also hasn't done much this year.

I hate to tell you, but these shows are not written by the artists. The writers and producers tell them what to do it. Carrie is not the one who decided how many dresses to wear. She has had alot of success, but she doesn't have that kind of power in the industry quite yet.

No, country music is not the same. Yes, I enjoy when they revisit classic sounds. But country music is more than wangy twangy steel guitars with a few banjos thrown in. It has alot to do with the lyrics and the vocals.

Taylor Swift winning female vocalist over Carrie Underwood? Are you kidding? There is no comparison in their voices. Sure, Taylor sells records and gets airplay, but that's about it.

My biggest complaint is the CMA throwing nominees in there just to fill the bill. 3 of the five new artists weren't at all new. Some of the artists in other categories may have had like one hit this year, but that's it. They cannot be expected to be taken seriously when they do this.

Taylor Swift is a studio creation who has never been able to sing! She could not carry(underwood) a tune in a bucket. meanwhile Carry Not to (Taylor) swift, decides to trash American Idol for her career. Martina McBride sounds more like a howler monkey , she does not sing she screams to the top of her lungs,Why? Because she can, I would guess.
If Kenney Chesnay wins entertainer fo the year one more time I will puke !!!

When will Toby Keith get his chance ,He seems to be the Susan Lucci of the music world We love you Toby.

167. na -
WE need the old singers back like Garth Brooks and them. TIM MCGRAW ROCKS!!!!! What happened to Shania Twain and ppl like her we need to stop getting all these new ppl and get the older singers back!!!!!!!

Overall, the CMA's were good. However, I have a "thing" about Rascal Flatts. What's the big draw with them? I cant stand anymore of Gary's screeching voice and he's the lead singer!! OMG, and they are from my town too.
I love Carrie and she deserves all the accolades she gets. Kellie as well. they are so deserving but Taylor Swift - how in this world has she gone this far in such a short time. She cant sing and her hand-written songs stinks but maybe she will grow up some day. She needs to be given a few lessons in acting. There ARE more gestures other than "OMG and hands over mouth."
Sugarland is great but Jennifer could easily go it alone and do just as well. She has a great voice so why not "solo?" Christian adds nothing but some guitar swinging and strumming.
Of course, the best is always last and happy for Kenny and great to see Shania. NOW, wouldnt they make an unsurmountable item except for Faith & Tim tho? They're #1.

I personally thought the show was kinda long and boring. It does seem to be more about the fashion and pop music and less about the country, heart, soul, etc... I didnt mind Carrie and Brad winning, thought Carrie shouldve won more, shes huge!! The sound sucked, doubt it was the singers fault - - all in all, a pretty unsatisfying experience.

170. BB -
I cry everytime I see my beloved Eagles back together again. They are timeless and fit into any genre of music. And on the subject of some of this music being too rock, where do these songs fit in? Everyone loves the 70's style of southern rock but there isn't that classification anymore or the radio stations to play it. They have to lean towards the country audience and fans. In my opinion, it is fine with me because we still have the old style mixed in with the George Straits and Reba's.

171. izzybear -
im happy that we dont have to watch the DIXIE TWITS ANYMORE

I totally enjoyed the CMA's, but I missed seeing Toby Keith and some of the newer male talents performing. Carrie had me in tears. Just because she never disappoints and is loaded with talent, don't hate on her. Compare some of the younger country music stars to their peers in hip/hop or alternative music. We need to support and encourage country and its artists as much as possible! I don't care for Tim McGraw much...he seems so arrogant. Martina rocks, and where was Gretchen Wilson's performance? She's got heart and guts. Love it.

173. Yahoo! Music User -
Who cares????

174. Bill -
Paisley is entered because it's entertainer of the year not who sells more albums or tickets. So far Reba has probably been the best bet for Ent of the year, maybe you can look to Swift or Underwood for the next shot, otherwise it's male dominated. The sound was horrible, couldn't hear half the acts over the bands.

175. -
First of all the CMA's are nominated and voted by the Big Music Labels(BML). A few years ago Toby Keith got fed up with the BML's and started his own label. Like anything in business, if you don't do it their way, they get someone else. The CMA's has nothing to do with fan popularity or the charts. The CMA's is just a night so the BML's can pat themselves on their own backs.

176. Tammy -
Oh and Kelly Picklers outfit? I think she must think that sexiness will sell more than voice. WRONG! She was actually much better being herself and being that small town country girl. THAT SOLD! This new skinny in black leather screamin aint gonna get her no where but the unemployment line in 5 years!

177. Tex -
I agree with almost all. Where has the "country" gone? Kellie Pickler turned from a true-American underdog story of success, into a hooker look- alike.., in that black leather. Who dresses these people?
I dont watch the CMA's to get sexually aroused. I want my kids to watch it, too.
Let someone who knows country- Not Hollywood, Produce the CMA's . Good Lord!!

178. Yahoo! Music User -
The CMA award--- what a joke-- The same ole crap. When I saw the blonde in black eye makeup, I had to change the tv, How in the hell is that country?????

179. Kiss my Grits -
AND where was Dolly Parton??? But I do love Carrie Underwood and applaud her success, but three dress changes WOULD have been enough...she is beautiful, however, and looked fab in them all. I did not get the whole Cinderella number...kind of goofy. Bring Dolly back next year.

180. Snide -
How about some straight facts here without all
of your opinions... Just name the winners and be done with it.

Review: Keys' newest flows well, but still average

AP - Alicia Keys, "The Element of Freedom" (J Records) On Alicia Keys' previous CDs, the gifted singer-songwriter-pianist presented songs that were epic and impeccable — moreso than her actual albums. Tunes like "… More »
