MP3s: Halloween? Cradle Of Filth Commands You Rot In Hell, Sin Eaters Everywhere!

Posted Wed Oct 29, 2008 3:43pm PDT by Ken Micallef in Better Living Through MP3

Notwithstanding Cradle of Filth's Godspeed On Devil's Thunder, which documents the life of serial child murderer, Satanist and Joan of Arc pal, Gilles de Rais, Halloween doesn't require subservience to a great demon, ghost, angelic being or black metal band. But what exactly is Halloween? Well, it's all wound up with the eating of "soul cakes," the absorbing of ancestral sins so that their souls can pass free and clear into the great beyond. Think I'm kidding?

WIKIPEDIA: "All Saints' Day (All Hallows Day) became fixed on November 1 in 835, and All Souls' Day on November 2, circa 998. On All Souls' Eve, families stayed up late, and little ‘soul cakes' were eaten by everyone. At the stroke of midnight there was solemn silence among households, which had candles burning in every room to guide the souls back to visit their earthly homes, and a glass of wine on the table to refresh them. The tradition continued in areas of northern England as late as the 1930s, with children going from door-to-door ‘souling' (i.e., singing songs) for cakes or money."

See, fool! By eating the sweet ‘soul cakes' you gobbled up the sin, the wretched past behavior of your ancestors, allowing them to enter Heaven free of baggage. But ahhh, this meant that your children must now eat your sins! Oh the humanity! It went like this:

The dead body lay on a marble slab, covered in delicacies (foie gras, cucumber sandwiches, Pop Tarts) and surrounded by bottles of blood red wine and Red Bull. The sin eater (aka "soul cake" imbiber) entered the dreadful mausoleum and began to wail and gnash his teeth. As he bellowed, he crammed the food down his throat, gorging himself on the nourishment and the sin! Come out! Like a vampire sucking blood, the sin eater drew strength from the feast, while his soul was damned to Hell.

So think about that when you're eating those Reese's Pieces, Snickers and Oreos. And play these tracks while your soul enters the gates of Hades!

Pinetop Perkins' 80-year career still going

AP

AP - Noisy crowds in smoky bars don't bother 96-year-old bluesman Pinetop Perkins. It's all part of his job. Most nights, after he snuffs out his menthol cigarette, Perkins slides onto the piano bench in some club and … More »
