We Will, We Will Not Rock You
Dreamstates needed...: Ever since Bebel Gilberto set hearts afire with her 2000 debut album Tanto Tempo, female-led electronica gurgles have found a home with audiences enamored of cool vibes, hazy atmospheres and blissful beats. Of course, the style has its precedent in the oh-so-cool bossa nova of Astrud Gilberto and her 1963 smash, "The Girl From Ipanema," but don't tell that to the 30 somethings who think ambient-tronica began with Lamb's Louise Rhodes, Hooverphonic, Ceu, or even Portishead's Beth Gibbons.
The new paradigm, exemplified in the music of Bitter:Sweet, is entirely different from the late '90s model. Back then the sounds were mad, the music twisted, the vocals lush and sometimes foreboding (remember those drum'n'bass-addled TV commercials?). Today's electro-swilling chanteuse is a multi-tiered marketing man's dream. She must look hot, sing ably enough yet not overwhelm the "tune," and most importantly, present a flexible digital persona ready to be sliced, diced and sampled to serve shoppers at Pottery Barn, Gap, and other trendy venues where even trendier "lifestyle" CDs are sold.
Los Angeles duo Bitter:Sweet fulfill the needs of both listeners and capitalists alike. Vocalist Shana Halligan and producer (and founding member of Supreme Beings Of Leisure) Kiran Shahani are typical of LA musicians operating in multiple scenes, all searching fame and fortune. When the pair repeatedly stumbled upon each other in area recording studios, they realized kismet had brought them together. He was a known quantity composing music for film and television and racking up remixes for such artists as Marilyn Manson, she'd also had the luck to see her tracks placed on film and TV; she even landed a walk-on role in Boston Legal. Their debut, The Mating Game, arrived in 2006.
The Mating Game was nearly perfect. You could almost hear the music without hearing it. You could picture it: soothing soundscapes, lush vocals, high flying beats that put you in the mood to hang glide, drink mojitos, and walk in the surf. The duo looks to keep hope alive with The Remix Game. The usual suspects line up with their bag of tricks to extend Bitter:Sweet's material to even greater dance floor heights. Thievery Corporation, AtJazz, Skeewiff, Nicola Conte, Fort Knox Five, Blackbeard, Marsmobil, Yes King and Roy Dubb lend their skills. Yes King adds near grime beats to "The Mating Game," adding to its 007 style. It's a dub drenching for Fort Knox Five's take on "Salty Air." And AtJazz goes entirely old school for "Moving Forward," using big synth pads and fat beats taken from mid 90s drum and bass.
All in all, it's a wonderfully cool ride, Halligan's voice soaring above the electronic din like a hummingbird hot for mating season.

Yogi-Roni: Where do you call home? What helps you to relax? Yogi Berra or Yoga? Some call baseball America's greatest pastime, implying that its relaxing summer swing is just the ticket to decrease stress. Others swear by the ancient practice of Yoga, ya know, bending your body around to release toxins, aid in healing and generally get flexible. Yoga One founders Amy and Michael Caldwell operate San Diego's interdisciplinary Hatha yoga studio, where music and muscle flexing soothe the savage beast, the angry housewife, the overworked salary man, and perhaps a few exotic dancers. The Caldwells enlisted the help of Quango Music to compile Yoga One, your one stop shop for soothing Yoga ready sounds. So roll out the mat, drink the hibiscus tea, and keep your eyes focused on that far point on the horizon...
Bliss, DJ Phil Mison, Bitter:Sweet, Thievery Corporation, Zeb, Christophe Goze, MIDIval PunditZ, Zero 7, Sophie Barker, and Tosca are all here to help you achieve your goals.
