MP3s: Female Vocalists Friday
Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Anita O’Day and Peggy Lee are unparalleled vocalists in my experience. These women created the jazz vocalist template from which today’s new batch of winsome singers--think Erin Bode, Roberta Gambarini, Nnenna Freelon, Lisa Ekdahl, and Julie Hardy--honed their craft. And though jazz enjoys shrinking market share these days, young women espousing complex harmonies and sprightly rhythms are seemingly on the rise. Here’s a few of the new, a few of the best.
