MP3s: Chilled Sounds For Quake Diving

Posted Sat Aug 2, 2008 4:35pm PDT by Ken Micallef in Better Living Through MP3

Our friends on the left coast inched a little closer to The Big One Tuesday, as an earthquake originating in Chino Hills, California sent shock waves to LA and its environs. In fact, the quake hit the Yahoo! offices just as a conference call with the music blogging staff was in session. Oh, the fear that went through the phone lines as Yahoo! shook and shimmied, while we bloggers prayed for a safe outcome. Luckily, the quake didn't drop the joint and the Yahoo! head honchos were able to complete the meeting.

So, seeing as our Yahoo! employers may still be a bit frazzled, here are some chilled out tunes designed to ease their spirits, soothe their minds, and generally calm the savage beasties!

Antenne's #3: Antenne is the nom de plume of Copenhagen's Kim G. Hansen, who formerly recorded as half of the Danish industrial duo Institute For The Criminally Insane. Hansen was also one of the founding members of Danish experimental noise-rock band Grind, who later became Amstrong--a project focused on trip-hop aesthetics. In 1999, Kim left Amstrong to form Antenne. Armstrong's vocalist, Marie-Louise Munck, also participates. Antenne is known for its minimalist, experimental trip-hop. #3 is their third full length release (duh).

Like robotic children playing with Etch'a'Sketch, Antenne's tunes combine rigid programming with youthful naïveté. Gentle acoustic guitars, waves lapping the shore, mesmerizing keyboard melodies, subliminal bass bombs meant to lull you to sleep, somnambulant vocals that float over the music like a mist, the songs of #3 will surely chill your soul and ease your weary mind.

Vladimir's Electrobohême: Combining pop vocal hooks with lithe dance grooves, this Spanish artist gives us the high five in sound. Sunny, upbeat and tuneful, Electroboheme is like a Saturday afternoon ride through treacherous mountains in a tricked out European sports car. Happiness and carefree vibes are in full force here.

Blue Tribe's Deep Buddha: And when the day is done, you slip into your blue silk robe, lift a snifter of Courvoisier to your gaping maw, and push the button that releases the soothing chants of Deep Buddha into the room. Dance like you've never danced before!
