MP3s: The CD Is Dead. Long Live The CD!

Posted Mon Oct 6, 2008 12:05pm PDT by Ken Micallef in Better Living Through MP3

Can you imagine? Pre the internet, before the iPod, when cordless phones were nonexistent and people actually drove American cars, listening to music was a completely different ballgame. During the last century, retail outlets like Tower Records, Peaches, Coconuts, and Sams Discount Auto kept a serious inventory of CDs, LPs, and (gasp) cassette tapes on hand. The idea being that punters would maybe see a movie or enjoy a live concert than perchance drift into the store to peruse the inventory.

I remember Tower Records on West 4th in Manhattan. Upstairs, 12" dance singles from Slick Rick to Bananarama to Madonna (yes, she is that old) could be had for like six bucks. Across the floor, jazz and classical titles bucked up against easy listening from grizzled veterans like Paula Abdul and Abbie Hoffman. You had to walk across the store like some marathon artist just to pick up some tunes. On the main floor, you had all yer rock stuff: Aerosmith, Metallica, Deep Purple, and even a sprinkling of, er, grunge and alternative. Downstairs, with the magazines, workers with pink hair and striped pants polished the cassette tapes.

Today, we don't have to bother with any of this mass merchandising hooey. We don't even need independent record stores, shoveling their college-oriented wares. The independent record store was a true evil. Little men with big dreams hoping to cash in on the sweat equity of your local rising rock star or independent label hussy. Oh well, they're all gone now.  Now we can look through millions of titles from every genre online! You gotta admit, surfing the net for sounds is a superior experience to driving to the record store, paying for parking (and 97 cent gas grandpa), looking for titles...it's enough to make me hyperventilate.

Here's something you could never get at Tower Records: free top ten downloads from every genre - spanning the globe!

I like that its easier now to obtain music. Music is the one thing that keeps everyone in the universe tied together. Lol plus I don't miss having to stop and rewind my cassette tape.

Too Bad they sound so awful !

So where are the free downloads??

Yeah, it's more convenient now but I miss the whole...viscerality of looking through bins of music, holding the product in your hands, reading the liner notes-more so with the late lamented LP record. The one thing wrong with virtual shopping is exactly that. It's VIRTUAL. No hands-on anything. Instant gratification through getting to hear music samples is fine and all but really...MP3s sound quality, c'mon?

Digital recording sucks!! You can take ANYBODY and turn them into a singer!!!! Recording on ANALOG tape and doing it OVER till you get it right is the only true way to record..most of these 'artists' today could never make it recording that way. They would blow out completely before they ever got it right, if they are even able to carry a tune to start with!! I KNOW what I am talking about, BTW...I am a session bassist and have done analog and digital...

CD'S ARE DEAD? I DON'T THINK SO...NOT JUST YET ANYWAY. SINCE RECORDS (LONG ABANDON DURING THE CD HEYDAY) ARE MAKING A COMEBACK AT LEAST IN J & R MUSIC WORLD. GRANTED ALOT CAN BE SAID FOR MP3'S. HOWEVER THERE IS STILL SOMETHING TO BE SAID FOR CD'S, I PERSONALLY LIKE TO RIP MUSIC FROM A CD RATHER THEN THE INTERNET. THE FACT THAT CERTAIN CATALOGS ARE STILL NOT AVAILABLE AS YET ON THE INTERNET, MAKES CDS STILL A VALUABLE COMMODITY.

I still listen to cassettes and records all the time. They make up most of my collection from when I was younger and can be found for a dollar or less at most second hand stores. They sound way better than mp3s and you can really get a good sense of the albums story by listening to the whole thing. I think knowing when to flip the side over makes one a more conscious and appreciative music lover. You also get to look at all the great artwork and follow along with the lyrics. (CD's are okay too:)

II rest my case...

CD's arent dead yet, but there is no question artists need to find other ways to get music out to the public cause it's so easy to get music for free. I also hate that most albums only have a couple good songs. So few artists actually spend the time to make a great record these days. it's sad!
