Kelly Clarkson's Sweet Makeover

Posted Fri Jan 9, 2009 3:54pm PST by Blender Magazine in The Blender Burner

Remember Kelly Clarkson's last album, 2007's My December, when she tried to leave the whole American Idol pop thing behind for some dark and stormy rock 'n' roll? She told her record company to shove it, dressed up like a goth biker, and let the world know that sometimes it hurt to be her--actually, it hurt all the time, and it hurt a lot, and...wait a minute, world, where are you going? Come back! Kelly didn't mean to bum you out.

At least that's the way it looks and sounds judging by "My Life Would Suck Without You," the first single from her upcoming album, All I Ever Wanted. It's a total makeover! On the cover for the single, she's a sleek, shiny, lollipop-licking temptress, and if her new songs are anywhere near as glossy as that lollipop then we're going to be hearing them remixed by hipster DJs all year long.

Clarkson's strength has always been that she's got the voice of a rock chick but she sings songs painstakingly crafted by professionals to hit the pop music sweet-spot. This is a winning system, there's no need to mess with it. And so this time, it's back to basics, which means songs from the Swedish hit factory that turned out her mega-awesome 2005 hit, "Since U Been Gone." Sweden: land of ABBA, purveyor of pop you can't get out of your head, uniter of you and your mom, who will both likely be caught singing this Kelly Clarkson song in the supermarket by early June.

In the wake of the My December situation, Clarkson dumped her management team and was forced to downgrade the scope of her tour due to poor ticket sales. It's a whole new Kelly, though, as friendly as the old Kelly. If a team of Swedes and some hot pink lipstick can't save Clarkson's career, we don't know what can.

Ah, I can't wait. I loved Breakaway AND My December (despite the criticisms - I don't think it would've gotten most of them if the whole controversy hasn't been there - I thought it was an excellent album), and I adore Kelly. So this is awesome.

You can be someone's true fan and still not like a song or even a whole album for that matter. I am a true fan, but sometimes I don't like the things she does.

Anyone who goes on Idol is a sellout. It's not about the music. The whole thing is about fame, adoration, fan-love, and money. They are narcissists who just want the world to tell them they are pretty. Sure, they've got a good voice, but that doesn't make talent or good music.

Real musicians want to make music first. They join a band, do shows, and if they have something special, become popular. What matters is the music. People like Clarkson are the dregs of the musical society. All they care about is the fame and fortune.

It doesn't matter what kind of makeover her stylist's decide to give her, the music she make's will alway's be boring, predictable, manufactured pop music , that has nothing relevant to say or anything interesting to offer.

Sniff-Sniff: I smell 80's gothy synth pop wannabe too many dance remixes. I love her voice. I think she's talented. I think she has even written a couple good tracks in the past. If the rest of her album sounds like that 30 second clip I heard - What a piece of crap! I do find the cover amusing though. This really shows how bad the economy really is when entertainers tell us the truth and polish the knob for free so to speak.

People who post things like "WHO?" and "Why is this news" need to go do their homework. Or their parents need to limit their internet time because obviously they are bored (although I suspect their parents want the internet to babysit their kids). Grow up or at least click on things that are interesting to you.

um, how can you people not know about kelly clarkson?

I've loved everthing she's put out... I don't know why everyone had a fit over My December. I thought it was full of talent... and I'm no accept-everything-that-comes-my-way kind of girl. I sing, play guitar, write my own songs, and I've been told I'm a tough critic, so this isn't coming from someone who just loves eeeeverything.
