Metallica Discuss Rock Hall Of Fame Induction

Posted Fri Jan 16, 2009 5:00pm PST by Blender Magazine in The Blender Burner

There are few other things rock boys and girls love arguing about more than who should or shouldn't be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Even real live rock stars like Metallica have opinions about this. The venerated metal band will be part of the induction class of 2009 alongside other bold names like Run-DMC. We caught up with the guys and asked them how it feels to be inducted. We also asked them which artists they would nominate to join them in the Rock Hall. So who did the guys pick? Motorhead, Deep Purple...and Rush.

Oh, yah! Go Deep Purple!

Interesting, but I still think that the RARHOF sucks.

Metallica........the sole reason the HOF is a joke. The fact that they can list groups like Rush, Deep Purple, etc. who are not in the Hall makes Metallica a paper tiger.

Who Cares about this?

Until KISS is in, they won't get my $$$$.

5. maybe later -
Why can't Metallica just GO AWAY!

Posers complaining about MetallicA. They have more influence and good music than 90% of the rest of the artists. You cannot deny that.

The HOF has really turned into a joke. Like every other aspect of "popular" music, it has turned into a "payola" popularity contest. There is little to no regard paid toward what musicians have shaped rock music into what it is today. It's the ROCK AND ROLL hall of fame - not the POP hall of fame or the HIP HOP hall of fame. I have no problem giving Run DMC respect. They're pioneers in their feild and every hip hop artist who is successful today owes them an enormous debt but they are not a ROCK AND ROLL group, nor is Chic (inducted last year). The fact that artists like Deep Purple, Rush and Kiss are not members of the "HOF" is a perfect example of the fact that if your record company throws enough money at the HOF, they'll put you in and if they don't, you get ignored. I don't begrudge Metallica being inducted, they've had a pretty strong influence on modern rock, but before bands like Rush and Deep Purple? I"ll bet even Metallica think that's wrong - well maybe not Lars.....

Redlam,

A joke? Doesn't matter that they sold out in 1991, what they did for trash metal when Cliff was alive alone was good enough to make them legends.

HOF is a popularity contest, just like Rolling Stone, just look at that terrible top 100 guitarist list they put out.
Like Metallica or not, they've sold almost 100 million albums world wide and have been playing for 25 years, they earned it, life isn't fair, move on.

Redlam, Let's agree to agree on that one - I wouldn't use Rolling Stone to wipe my butt for fear of getting infected by all the liberal political garbage coming from that "music" magazine. Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying Metallica hasn't paid their dues. My beef is that the HOF has ignored legendary artists in favor of artists whose management greases their palms. I'm not lumping Metallica in with those, but there are plenty of other acts in the HOF that simply haven't earned the right. I visted the HOF very early on, as I grew up not far from Cleveland. We had eagerly waited for them to get the doors open and when I finally got to go there, I was a bit disappointed. That was many years ago, but I can't imagine that it's changed for the better. I'd rather wander through the NY City Hard Rock Cafe and pay $14 for a piece of Cheesecake. At least they've got some cool stuff on the walls. I've been a musician my entire life and it's all I can do to keep from launching my TV out the front door whenever I hear about the Grammy's or the AMA's or whatever other self gratifying hand-me-a-trophy-for-being-pretty awards show is on TV. Real music doesn't exist in the RaRHOF or the Hard Rock Cafe or on *gag* MTV. It exists is smokey bars and clubs in "Ourtown, USA" and in home studios and dirty, rented rehearsal halls. Real music exists within the musicians who create it and the fans who listen. I'm only half a musician is noone hears me play. We all need to remember what made us like music in the first place and maybe the "music business" might belong to US again one day. (sorry for ranting)

17. Ira -
Do the people who induct people into the rarhof even know what the hell rock and roll is?

18. Ira -
I am glad to Metallica is finally getting inducted it is long over due along with Deep Purple and Rush and Motorhead, but where are the Doors, and why is Run DMC going in? although they where great in their field which was not ROCK AND ROLL same with Michael Jackson, the Jackson 5, etc.. This is crazy where do they get their information for the rarhof? Again do they even know what ROCK AND ROLL is???

19. TrEaDbErRy5582 -
how can u rag on metallica??? they are amazing

20. JoelW -
KIS should never be in. it should not be just about record sales and popularity.

talent and the lack of should be deemed the main reason not to induct a group or person

Pinetop Perkins' 80-year career still going

AP
Fri Nov 27, 2009 4:03am PST

AP - Noisy crowds in smoky bars don't bother 96-year-old bluesman Pinetop Perkins. It's all part of his job. Most nights, after he snuffs out his menthol cigarette, Perkins slides onto the piano bench in some club and … More »
