Joaquin Phoenix: Actor, Rapper, Or Freakiest Man Alive?

Posted Fri Feb 13, 2009 5:29pm PST by Blender Magazine in The Blender Burner

When Joaquin Phoenix was on David Letterman's Late Show last week, he became the latest celeb to turn a Letterman appearance into a spectacularly awkward freak show, joining a list of greats that includes Madonna, Courtney Love, Paula Abdul, and Paris Hilton. Take a look at these infamous moments and more in the clips below on Burner to see who deserves the title of the all-time strangest.

As for Joaquin, only one thing is certain: The man can grow a good beard. A full, thick face bush that brings to mind Grizzly Adams in the wild, Jim Morrison in Paris, or Matisyahu on his way to temple. That's clear. What's less clear after his appearance on Letterman is what's going on under the beard.

Joaquin has been saying for the last few months that he's quitting acting for music, specifically for a career as a rapper. In January, he celebrated this news by getting on the mic in Las Vegas and promptly falling off the stage. On hand was Casey Affleck, who's been filming Joaquin for the past few months for a documentary.

The speculation that it's all a bit of performance art for Affleck's camera was only fueled by Joaquin's appearance on Letterman to promote what may or may not be his final movie, Two Lovers. He seemed out-of-it and generally unable to put a sentence together, causing many people to wonder if this isn't an Andy Kaufman-esque stunt. On the other hand, Two Lovers director James Gray told MTV News that Joaquin has built a bona fide studio at his house, and was working on music the last time Gray visited. So who knows?

No one will be surprised if this all turns out to be a joke. What would be really shocking is if Joaquin Phoenix is working on some sort of Johnny Cash-Wu Tang Clan mashup in his home studio. Walk The Line meets The 36 Chambers? Joaquin, you can do it!

T.I. has only one person to blame about his predicament.  Find out who on Blender.com.

4. Yahoo! Music User -
Talentless.

5. Yahoo! Music User -
why would he quit his bread and butter job to lose all of his money trying to rap. We all know what happens to rappers like him.

Phoenix needs someone to adjust his medication.

Publicity stunt. Hasn't he always been a little "out there" in the first place? Artistic expression gone a little mad.

8. Yahoo! Music User -
I like midgets

9. lynnie -
these pictures disturb me in how much he is reminding me of john belushi(a bit slimmer perhaps)

i hope his life will not end like his brothers or johns.

Number 10, they prefer to be referred to as little people.....and I like them also.

Is this some kind of Andy Kaufman/Tony Clifton type publicity stunt?

I mean but he has been known to be on drugs, etc... so wouldn't that be the first explanation for his strange behavior rather than simply attention-seeking?

Not when you are launching your new career.

First of all I can see most of the people on here are people who are afraid of taking chances in life and when they see some doing so just judge them on preconceptive ignorant views that stem from your own lack of confidence to try something new. If he wants to become a rapper respect the man for what he wants to do and have admiration because of his ability not to care what people think. In my opinion that is why freaking economy is going down: people not thinking outside the box and are just conformed the norm and to the unknown.

I think he is serious-seriously wasted and following in his little brothers footsteps-sad!

16. vikingsfan3 -
I think he's on some kind of drugs, there is no way that this is a publicity stunt.

Another reason to "Just Say No to Drugs". Point blank...

18. Go Adam Lambert!! -
who is he!!!!

19. Megan A -
I think he is probably on drugs, I mean why else would he be wearing sunglasses? He obviously needs some serious direction in life and he seems pretty lost and out there! He is sort of scary!

20. mo jo man -
is this guy related to cousin IT on the ADDAMS FAMILY or is it IT in person !!!!!!!!!!!!

Pinetop Perkins' 80-year career still going

AP
Fri Nov 27, 2009 4:03am PST

AP - Noisy crowds in smoky bars don't bother 96-year-old bluesman Pinetop Perkins. It's all part of his job. Most nights, after he snuffs out his menthol cigarette, Perkins slides onto the piano bench in some club and … More »
