Kanye West Caught Lip-Synching?

Posted Fri Dec 19, 2008 3:35pm PST by Blender Magazine in The Blender Burner

Kanye West is well-known for two things: his awesome rapping and his arrogance. The guy's music is so intensely good it (almost) justifies his God complex. Every time the rapper gets onstage at some awards show and accepts one statue by claiming he should have won another one, we usually have to agree. West has encouraged us to expect such a superhuman level of perfection from him, it was inevitable he would one day not be able to meet it.

That day was last Saturday, when West performed on Saturday Night Live. Dude did not sound good. He was more American Idol blooper reel than Grammy-winning polished performer. So what was the problem? Well, it had something to do with the Auto-Tune feature--you know the part of "Love Lockdown" where he sings about a system overload and losing control? Well, he was living it! And it was also pretty clear that when he got to the high notes, he pulled away from the mic and let an offstage singer handle the tough stuff. The bottom line is that we saw behind the curtain of Kanye West's seemingly impenetrable awesomeness. So was it satisfying to witness the world's most egocentric rapper all exposed on national television? No, no it was not. People were outraged. How dare he...sound so bad!

The outrage was so intense that it morphed into a bizarre lip-synching accusation. Instead of blaming Kanye West for putting on a sub-par performance, people attacked him for revealing that all those robotic tweaks in his songs are not, you know, organically produced. (Um, guys, there's no Santa Claus, either).

We say the scandal is not that Kanye lip-synched through a live TV performance, but that he failed to lip-synch through a live TV performance. If he'd had all the right bells and whistles on board, we would have been all like, "Wow, this rules," rather than all like, "Wow, this hurts our ears." Just sayin'.

NEVER MAKE THE MISTAKE OF MAKING ANY OF THESE PEOPLE BIGGER THAN WHAT THEY ARE. HE'S NOT THE VOICE OF A GENERATION. HE DOES HOWEVER REPRESENT A DIFFERENT DYNAMIC THAT HIP HOP NEEDED. AND ALSO AS FOR SINGING KANYE CANT SING OBVIOUSLY WHICH MAKES THE NEW ALBUM MORE FOR IN CAR LISTENING AS OPPOSED TO LIVE SHOWS. ALL ON ALL THERE IS NOTHING SUPER HUMAN INVOLVED WE ARE ALL ON THE SAME LEVEL PALYING FIELD OF LIFE. VULNERABLE AT TIMES, EGOCENTRIC AT TIMES, DOWN RIGHT WROND AT TIMES BUT ALSO RIGHT AT TIMES. STOP PUTTING SO MUCH OF YOUR DREAM INTO THESE PEOPLE AND SEE THEM FOR WHO THEY ARE.

SIMPLY PUT ... HE JUST OUTRIGHT STINKS ... TO HIGH HEAVEN ... HE'S ALWAYS BEEN AND SHALL REMAIN UNLISTENABLE ... NOT TO MENTION AN IRRITATING, OBNOXIOUS CUSS ... IT'S A MYSTERY HOW HE'S GOTTEN THIS FAR WITH NARY A TRACE OF DISCERNABLE TALENT ... ANOTHER MISGUIDED RAPPER WHO THINK ATTITUDE TRUMPS REAL SKILL.

it just sounded like he had a female back-up singer step in for him on the high notes when he turned away from the mic. no biggie...i'd reather hear that coupled with a less than stellar live performance than fake-as-plastic lip-syncing.

I think the BIGGER uproar should be how lame and terrible this host is....!!!!! Who's with me on that one, kids?

"And it probably was SNL fault F**k."

Haterz,Haterz,Haterz 1)True Kanye is not a singer (and he never said he was) and neither is T-Pain,Lil'Wayne and any other rapper that use that(now very much over used)autotune machine and if u strip the auto tune from these rappers im sure you will get the same not so great performance believe me ive heard lil wayne live (not a good look)So stop hating on Kanye for a performance on SNL where no one sounds good when performing 2 words Mariah Carey......the high notes just dont work anymore.

Why does it even matter to anyone that has something bad to say? He is still making more money than all of you and doing what he wants to do.

1st of all, he didn't do HORRIBLY! Did you see the Brit clip? And until he hits the paparazzi with an umbrella, I won't think he's completely psycho. 2nd of all, to the person who ranted about the elder generation. I personally LOVE some of the music from that generation, but I also love some from this generation (such as Kanye.) I think you're problem is that you're not open minded enough, you're a stereotypical, burnt out oldy who likes to bash this generation. Whilst some of us don't, most of us have at least half a brain. YOU'RE the one who's ignorant enough to call US the insecure, not to mention egotistical. The celebs are, yes, and hell, some of them deserve to be. But to call the entire generation trash is where you're wrong. I think you should think about that before you go around saying stuff like that ever again...

kanye is the bomb!....but this juss goes to show these rappers need to stop singing same wit lil wayne

If you think He is so bad, do not buy his albums or lisen to him sing. Get a life and live in the real world. Let them live in theirs and you live in yours and yours will never be like theirs. Just be real to yourself. Life is too short.
