Kanye West Caught Lip-Synching?

Posted Fri Dec 19, 2008 3:35pm PST by Blender Magazine in The Blender Burner

Kanye West is well-known for two things: his awesome rapping and his arrogance. The guy's music is so intensely good it (almost) justifies his God complex. Every time the rapper gets onstage at some awards show and accepts one statue by claiming he should have won another one, we usually have to agree. West has encouraged us to expect such a superhuman level of perfection from him, it was inevitable he would one day not be able to meet it.

That day was last Saturday, when West performed on Saturday Night Live. Dude did not sound good. He was more American Idol blooper reel than Grammy-winning polished performer. So what was the problem? Well, it had something to do with the Auto-Tune feature--you know the part of "Love Lockdown" where he sings about a system overload and losing control? Well, he was living it! And it was also pretty clear that when he got to the high notes, he pulled away from the mic and let an offstage singer handle the tough stuff. The bottom line is that we saw behind the curtain of Kanye West's seemingly impenetrable awesomeness. So was it satisfying to witness the world's most egocentric rapper all exposed on national television? No, no it was not. People were outraged. How dare he...sound so bad!

The outrage was so intense that it morphed into a bizarre lip-synching accusation. Instead of blaming Kanye West for putting on a sub-par performance, people attacked him for revealing that all those robotic tweaks in his songs are not, you know, organically produced. (Um, guys, there's no Santa Claus, either).

We say the scandal is not that Kanye lip-synched through a live TV performance, but that he failed to lip-synch through a live TV performance. If he'd had all the right bells and whistles on board, we would have been all like, "Wow, this rules," rather than all like, "Wow, this hurts our ears." Just sayin'.

i liked his early stuff, it was genuinly good. but this new stuff is just terrible, the SNL performance was a total disaster! From the terrible singing (which he shouldnt be doing) to the new look (yikes). And for the record who cares how much money he makes or has? That has nothing to do with sounding and looking bad, if he keeps this up he not going to be making any money at all and he'll end up washed up and out filing bankruptcy!

I don't know why everybody is being so harsh on Kanye's latest album. 1st of all before the album was released he said that he did this for himself. 2nd anyone who listened to the album knew kanye had a crutch. 3rd If you actually listened to the album you realized the genius in the lyrics not him himself. finally, do you people listen to an artist because of how he appears in the press or because you like that artist? So WTF does his ego have to do with anyting?

he makes really good music, but his arrogance is unbearable...

Can you say Milli Vanilli. Even when his music starts playing on the radio I change the station.

I can't believe people really take him that seriously. Most entertainers need a "shtick", something to set themselves apart. Unfortunately, for rappers, it's how many times they got shot or how much money they blow. For Kanye he uses arrogance. Just like Diddy. Still, you can't deny his talent. Also, how in the world can anyone say he was lip synching on snl? Those computer generated sounds through his mouthpiece makes his voice sounds like a robot. That has been around for a long time (Roger Troutman)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YALL STOP HATING ON THE MAN. IT TAKES ALOT OF GUTS TO GO OUT THERE AND SING LIVE TO PEOPLE. AT LEAST SANG THE SONG INSTEAD OF LIP SYNCHING THE THING. KANYE IS THE MAN!!

I don't think he sounded that bad. I liked his performance. It was entertaining.

Kanye West has NEVER been a good rapper. He's been a good producer who's manufactured an image of himself as a good rapper. ANY good producer can make themselves sound OK with enough time at a Pro Tools rig. REAL rappers could lay down great rhymes with nothing but a beatbox - Kanye NEEDS all the production and auto-tuning and over-produced beats. His rhymes are tired and lame without the spectacle.

Kanye isn't the only entertainer that lack's substance... the majority of artists in the hip-hop/rap community lack it... they love to rely and hide behind a lot of synthesized "music" to boost their presence. This isn't to say that he has no talent... he does have skill... but not as much as he's hyped up to have. He'll never have the skills of a Tupac, or any one of the WuTang Clan, Slick RIck, Nine, Busta Rhymes... etc.

you guys, give him a break. seriously. i bet half of you guys couldn't sing/rap half as well as he does. i know i don't. if he needs someone to help him out on high pitches, then i say go for it.

34. julz -
it also sounded like he had a cold

JUST DON'T GO ON IF YOU CAN'T PERFORM.

Kanye can go to the dog pound for all I care. Please he can't sing, and his ego is way above the cloud he floats on...Taylor Swift is so hyped, every song is about some shattered fairy tell, I mean please. And she squints here eyes all the time, or they are upside down. And I don't buy all that disney hype about her and the Jonas boy, can you say publicist...This is a big fabricated pop star

39. JasmineS -
I will admitt Kanye is good but come on if you mess up you mess up no is to good mot to make a mistake .

I will admitt kanye is good . but come on now if you mess up you mess up . Even if something as tragic as losing your mother shouldn't take away from you performance( not to sound harsh). How many months has it been and he is still trippin'? It is not the end of the world if you mess up one performance. let this be a lesson to all the rappers out there who want to sing on their tracks : If you can't sing with out a audio-tune feature , you shouldn't be singing at all.
