What Really Happened: Nirvana/Guns N' Roses Clash At The 1992 VMAs

Posted Fri Nov 21, 2008 8:57pm PST by Blender Magazine in The Blender Burner

So you live in Seattle, you used to play bass in a world-changing rock band, but these days you've got some time on your hands. What to do? Well, if you're Krist Novoselic of Nirvana, or Duff McKagan formerly of Guns N' Roses/currently of Velvet Revolver, the answer is clear: You blog for the Seattle Weekly. This week, Novoselic celebrated his first year of blogging by recapping the epic tale of the Nirvana/Guns N' Roses clash at the 1992 Video Music Awards.

You may remember the story: Axl Rose gets teased by Courtney Love backstage, and in response Axl steps to Courtney's husband, Kurt Cobain, to tell him to keep his lady in line. Words are exchanged! Axl challenges Kurt to get in the ring! And like every other similar challenge, it never happens.

Here's what does: Nirvana go onstage and play "Lithium," and the whole thing explodes into anarchy. Stage divers? Check! Novoselic tossing his bass 20 feet into air, failing to catch it and getting conked on the head? Check! Cobain and drummer Dave Grohl attacking their instruments? Check! It's an awesome example of what never happens on MTV anymore--but happens at M.I.A. shows all the time.

In his blog post, Novoselic talks about meeting McKagan backstage in '92, long before they were friends and blog-leagues ("I think Duff was also under the influence. He must have heard something from Rose and had a terse word for me..."), and he reveals which '70s rock god was in the green room waiting with some chilled medicine for his injury.

This was a classic statement of the that period..It showed the decline of the 80's metal gods..all the glam and rock excess ushered in the rock revolution that Nirvana created.I was a fan of both bands at that time, but by far Nirvana had the greater musical impact.

Hm...hard to tell. I'd go for Nirvana, but GNR is freakin awesome too.

who cares about 1992 fights between two wired fools that don't have any social skills to say the least. I love GNR music but hate what they represent. The drug scene is so lame and getting wasted and blowing your head off and/or overdosing to death is totally uncool. That is a waste of time.

Who the hell ever said that getting wasted and blowing your head off was cool? Or excuse me TOTALLY cool. What a dumbass statement. Stick to what you know yankee, which obviously isn't to much.

Nirvana will live forever in our hearts and souls and as for guns and roses well the roses died out years ago and the guns are so rusted and can never be reloaded again!!!

Nirvana GNR

Nirvana GNR

although both are exceptional bands

Damn thing doesn't let you use "greater than" signs.

Nirvana is greater than GNR

Axl was and is bigger than Kurtis has ever been. Axl was about having a good time while Kurtis cried, complained, and brought us down. I never got Nirvanna's music. Something about a bunch of well off kids whining about how life sucks while a group(GnR) that has nothing creates masterpieces on how life is great and shows the beauty of it. Nirvanna are forgotten while Axl is creating some of the best stuff I heard in the last decade. Btw what is Kurtis up to? oh wait... my bad I forgot he couldn't handle it when his band's popularity was declining.

Grunge was freaking awesome!!!! that kind of anarchy is indeed something that you will never see again on the MTV's....Nirvana will give GNR a run for their money anytime!!!

Hm...this was when the VMAs and MTV were the best.

14. Patches O'Riley -
This was back when MTV was good; now it sucks with crap shows like the Hills and horrible music.

This guy talks a retard.

Hell, I grew up listening to both bands and I must say I still enjoy both of them. The music was and still is great. Who cares about a fight that happened 16 years ago? Listen to the music not the B.S.
