Here's a list of Michael Jackson's top 40 songs in terms of total paid downloads. For the most part, the list coincides with a recap of Jackson's biggest hit singles. But there are some key differences.

Michael Jackson has three of the five best-selling albums for the second week in a row. Number Ones again leads the pack with sales of 339,000 copies. At this rate, it could end up as the #1 album of the year.

Michael Jackson is only the 13th artist to have the top-selling album in the U.S. posthumously. The list is sobering. Six of the 13 artists were in their 20s when they died. Five were shot to death.

If you like downloading individual songs, you have lots of company. If you like buying full albums, you're part of a shrinking club. Lady GaGa and Miley Cyrus scored big with both camps in the first half of 2009.

Michael Jackson always liked to set records. He sets quite a few of them this week. For starters, he has the three best-selling albums in the country.(So why isn't he #1 on The Billboard 200?)

Michael Jackson is hardly the first top male African American artist to die in his prime. Many of the top male soul stars of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s have been struck down in middle age (or even earlier).

I doubt there was ever a major artist who cared as much about pop music statistics as Michael Jackson did. It's not surprising he got hooked on the charts: He was a fixture on them most of his life.
