Avril Lavigne, Framed

Posted Tue Jul 10, 2007 10:44am PDT by John Kordosh in Framed

Who's hotter than Avril Lavigne?  "Girlfriend" - the first single off her LP, The Best Damn Thing, was her first #1 single in the U.S. ... and the accompanying video has been just as hot.  The playful video features Avril in three key roles: as a red-haired, bespectacled "nice girl," as her saucy, dark-haired interloper, and as her blonde, rockin' self.  Some think she even plays the guy, but I'm not sure about that.

What's great about the whole thing is the unapologetic meanness of the song's story, in which the dark-haired girl mocks, pushes, demeans and laughs at the hapless librarian-type girl, swaggering off with the fought-over hottie by the end of the tale.  It's a swell message for Avril's many 'Tween fans - in fact, it's just plain uplifting: If you don't get what you want, go ahead and take it in an unfair and underhanded way.

To be fair to Avril, she does portray both the loser and the winner in this sketch.  And, what the hell, it is just an Avril Lavigne song.  So let's enjoy the video - or, since this is "Framed" - let's enjoy the greatest frames of the video, complete with Framed-type commentary.

1 - Location note: "Girlfriend" was filmed at Southern California's Golf N' Stuff.  Interested readers can find it right off the US-101 in Ventura, next to Crappy Music N' Stuff.

2 - Avril recorded the song in an astonishing 900 languages, including Canadian!

3 - The ill-conceived contraction craze now threatens life itself!

4 - But a magnet that attracted only hair had previously been a fanciful dream!

5 - Avril wrote "Girlfriend" while she was drunk!

6 - Um, maybe this guy doesn't really want a girlfriend...

7 - On the other hand, can we agree that this babe has absolutely unimpeachable girlfriend qualities?

8 - "12 + 13 + 16!  Get it??!"

9 - Avril wrote "Girlfriend" while she was drunk!

10 - You're probably wondering how, exactly, we do "Framed," and can think of other uses for our video-stopping powers.

11 - Hey!  Grrrlz can't play sprrrtz!

12 - A visit from Gummo, the Sentient Bubble, always delights!

13 - Jimmy's signal watch brings a speedy response!

14 - Dirty and thankless, sure, but - still - the koi must be herded.

15 - To her horror, the tornado had destroyed almost all of downtown Canada.

16 - It's the Rubinoos!  Run, Avril, run!!

Thank you for saving me the effort of having to watch these videos myself.

Who plays the koi?

Hey, mon -- criticizing music videos, making cheap jokes about Canadians, and lamenting (gasp!) "the ill-conceived contraction craze"! Whadda you think this is?!? CREEM Magazine in deepest 1986 or something?!? I laffed my briefs off at your signature reference to herding koi -- maybe the vid was shot right in your own front yard. Here in my neck of the woods, we actually have a "koi auto parts" chain -- the acronym stands for "kentucky, ohio, indiana," of course, nothing fishy about that. Too, too great to read your good words in public once again.

John,

Absolutely love what you're doing here! Great breakdown of the video; especially Avril's talents. Just as much as anyone else, I too, share the propenscity to stare at her...yet, more than most, I appreciate how multi-talented she is. I have no doubt whatsoever that unlike some of her alleged contempories, Avril will win an Oscar one day (if she wants too!).

The only thing that I don't like about her--and I do think it's an age thing--is sometimes she's a bit over the top with language.

Otherwise, blow off #7's comments! I can't tell if they're good or bad simply because the guy is functionally illerate.

Cheers mate!

this is pretty much the stupidest song i have ever heard and an equally stupid video...i have no doubt this was written in a drunken stupor...LAME.

There is enough of an epidemic of teen girls fighting as it is without Avril frankly capitalizing on the mean-spiritedness of certain middle and high school aged girls to promote this silly song to make it worse. It makes me sick that Walmart promotes this album al of the time, and yet they refuse certain other albums because they don't match their standards of decency. What is decent or moral about a girl being airlifted to a hospital because she received a skull fracture in a fight over a guy, as I've seen happen recently? Avril doesn't care; she's in it for the bucks.
The young people fighting now are more often girls than boys, and isn't this great for her career? By the way, she macked her sound from Alanis Morrisette 100%. Compare a couple of their songs. But Alanis has authenticity and a sense of kindness toward others. Avril is a horrible role model.

I think this is great. I have a comment though about the guy who said that certain girls don't deserve thier boyfriends how do you know that. I think it is really big headed of you to think you can determine what people do and do not deserve . anyways I think it is suppossed to be comical not away for girls to get a role model but from being picked on a lot in school I really didn't find the video tofunny . I think avril is a really great preformer though but I also think that she is kind of full of herself and a poser. this was awsome though .

If you think she's "punk" I'm sorry, but when you have your music on the soundtrack for "Spongebob Squarepants", you are NOT hardcore. LOL She's a little girl poser who's trying to be Miss Thang.
