Bee Gees, Framed

Posted Mon Dec 8, 2008 11:33am PST by John Kordosh in Framed

We've had a lot of great stars in Framed, but perhaps none greater than this week's guests, the Bee Gees. The 'Gees--brothers Maurice, Robin and Barry Gibb--are one of the best-selling bands in history, and true superstars. This week's video, "Stayin' Alive," one of their best known songs, is from the monstrous Saturday Night Fever album, which pretty much defined the disco era of the late '70s.

Readers have grown accustomed to our expert video analysis, and we'll pull no punches in saying that this video is uniformly dreadful. Despite the greatness of the 'Gees, no one had really over thought rock video back in 1977. The idea of having the brothers Gibb stroll through a bombed-out landscape--while certainly charming!--had absolutely nothing to do with the song itself. In fact, the set for "Stayin' Alive" was next door to the set where the 'Gees were filming the even-more-horrible Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band movie. To top it off, the primitive picture quality of the video reminds us why we rarely even use the company time machine anymore.

Still, the whole thing has a certain historical value, and the song remains pretty catchy--it ranks #46 on Billboard's list of the Top 100 songs of all time. So hunker down and dig what your parents thought of as entertainment, and take heart: next week, Britney Spears returns to Framed!

1-- Framed Fun Fact: Proper installation of your storm windows, as shown here, will conserve energy and lower your heating bills.

2 -- And coming up next on ABC: When Shirley buys her first car, a secret is revealed... Laverne is afraid to drive!

3 -- "Ironically, I haven't been stayin' alive for years now!"

4 -- "Hmm. How deep is... how deep is your... your conviction?... your recession?... your Marianas Trench? Well, something will come to mind."

5 -- "Why, yes... it's possible our images would be fuzzy  if, somehow, people from the future could look in on us."

6 -- "Well, boys, we've liberated Paris. But at what cost?"

7-- "Seriously. I can't tell by the way you use your walk that you're a woman's man. I just can't."

8-- "My dream? That someday an American television show will allow me to mentor singers who, though clearly talentless, have riveted the nation in an inane competition."

9 -- "Zeus! Your temple cannot stand against the might of mine own falsetto!"

10 -- "We must leave you now, Earth. And though our journey to the jungle worlds of Alpha Centauri promises to be harrowing, we shall return with even better disco! We promise!"

11 -- Maurice Gibb's back! And Barry Gibb's back! And Robin Gibb's back

12 -- "Maybe next we should star in a movie with Peter Frampton himself!"

My best friend and I grew up loving and idolizing the Bee Gees...We kept scrapbooks of over 300 pics, watched every televised special they were on, bought every movie, including soundtrack or appearances, (yes including and especially Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band),listened to every radio broadcast of their interviews in our area, bought every magazine on the shelves with them in it and purchased every record they ever had produced including the ones in Australia! I don't care what anyone says, they rock! I think that your number three on your list was pretty tacky considering Maurice passed away tho...shame on your journalism...but thanks for posting the pics of the guys!

As a child of the 70's I have always been a Bee-Gee's fan. Yeah, #3 was a bit tacky but I enjoyed the photos.

Granted, I find this band mostly irritating and worth making some jokes about, but #3 was very bad form.
