Taylor Hicks, Framed

Posted Mon May 18, 2009 11:38am PDT by John Kordosh in Framed
If you're a fan of American Idol--and, really, who isn't?--this is an exciting time of the year! Once again, we're down to two finalists and an anxious nation finds itself unable to concentrate on things like work and family. Who will it be, Adam or that other guy?

We don't know, but we thought this would be a good week to look back on one of our favorite Idols, Taylor Hicks, to see how things have been going for him since his ascension back in season five. You'll recall that Taylor eked out a victory that year over Katharine McPhee, who has since actually vanished from the face of the Earth.

Post-Idol, Taylor's eponymous first album went platinum and hit #2 in the U.S. His second, The Distance, was released in March of this year and hasn't fared as well, peaking at #58. This week's video is "What's Right Is Right," off the second record, and it's fairly typical of Hicks' oeuvre. We see the soulful Hicks onstage mostly, and it's really not a bad song.

Faint praise? Perhaps. To be honest, we need the help of you, our estimable readers, to assess Taylor's place in the pantheon of Idols. Taylor Hicks: better than Adam Lambert, or only just as good?  Vote now!

1 -- "Boy! Who'd've thought the producers owned a part of Siberia to which they could actually banish lesser Idols?"

2 -- "Be not alarmed, Idol human. Gummo has chosen to study you, as he does he would an insignificant twig, or Tatiana."

3 -- "Sure, I like a l'il drinky nowadays. Wha's wrong wit' that? Huh, Mr. Simon Cowell? Huh??"

4 -- "Still lookin' fer that free drink, rummy?"

5 -- "I'm certain, honey. Cialis may cause dizziness, drowsiness, fainting, or blurred vision, but it can't make you appear in a failed music video."

6 -- "As you can see, fellow Bubbles, this being has absolutely no sense of graceful motion."

7 -- George Clooney was the worst Batman ever!

8 -- Giant-Sized Taylor occasionally appears onstage with Regular-Sized Taylor!

9 -- "Soul Patrol! Help! Against my will, I'm starting to actually move!"

10 -- She would go home to download Kelly Clarkson ringtones and, for a brief time, imagine.

11 -- "Lyndsey Parker? You're the one who lobbied for David Cook over Archie, right?"

12 -- "It will be amusing to empower the ant he has spied to actually move that rubber tree plant."

Damn straight I did, Taylor!

I don't like the 'Murph and the Mellow Tones, live at the Holliday Inn' arrangement. This song would be much better with a fatter, more rock and roll band sound. Electric guitar is sorely missing. I'm not talking about tempo, just sound.

I know talent when I see and hear it and Taylor is the TALENT!!
Sing it Taylor, I love you!!

Was this guy famous or something?....

Taylor Hicks is the WORST AI winner - BY FAR.
Adam Lambert will be the BEST AI winner - BY FAR.
They are opposite ends of the spectrum.

I love Taylor!! There is no comparison between Taylor and Adam Lambert - apples and oranges. Taylor is by far better than the runner up this year (Kris, is it??)

Taylor has excellent talent. I find too often that the popular music amounts to not much more than someone screaming into a microphone words that should never be said in private, let alone in public. It makes me wonder what is happening in our society as a whole when people start listening to crap and even worse offer it to our children. Maybe Taylor can start to bring back the true art of music and we can once again become a society of class instead of mindless beings being led by half naked women and filthy mouthed men.

John, I thought I would take a moment to tell you, I am sorry if I offended you in any way. I guess I just was not thinking when I posted some rude, insensitive comments. It will not happen again. Thanks.

I love Taylor!! I think this was a reallt good song and he sounds great. Would be awesome to have the man in my life sing it and mean it to me. lol As for this years Idol, I was 100% a Gokey supporter!! I am happy Kris won, I think he's great as well. Adam to me was a screamer and not at all my taste in music. I think he needs to be on broadway doing CATS or something!! lol He actually seems like a very likable guy just not my taste. For all the Adam fans you need not worry, he will do well. GO DANNY!! GO KRIS!! AND GO TAYLOR!!!! :)

Wow, apparently when you went to that seminar on humor, you missed the next class on writing funny captions.

I like Taylor Hicks, he just needs some good song writers..he is very handsome....

Taylor is terrific. He's is extremely handsome & talented. Love SMB. His best yet. The cover of "The Distance" makes me smile. He looks like a mob enforcer - a "goodfella" - a mafioso -- sexy, but malevolent. I believe he keeps his hair silver because he's attracted to older women (ten, fifteen or more years older) and wants them to be attracted to him.
