Duran Duran, Framed

Posted Fri Aug 24, 2007 4:41pm PDT by John Kordosh in Framed

Here at "Framed" we have a lot of fun with music videos, but this week we'd like to return to a simpler time.  Perhaps a happier and more naïve time.

A time when Duran Duran was really popular.

It all happened back in the 1980s, when the artform of music video was nascent.  MTV had started up and they were feeding not only rock music, but rock imagery, to the world's youth.  This had never happened before, and it would change everything.  Except for, you know, death and such.  But a lot of stuff, nonetheless.

The darlings of MTV were a British quintet called Duran Duran, who were as photogenic as they were easy to take pictures of.  The Duranies' brand of danceable pop swept the world and their videos became the mainstays of MTV.  People talked about them everywhere, and their well-produced videos set a standard that exists today.

So this week we'll look at one of their greatest videos--the one for their 1982 hit tune "Rio"--and salute these pioneers of a type of art we completely adore.

And then we'll wash our hair.

1 - Gummo and his people, the Bubbles, often hung with D2 , and danced in their videos for fun.

2 - Jesus.  I so want to be in this video.

3 - Some surfaces are difficult to paint and should be sanded and primed first.

4 - "Try yi yi not to bruise it!"

5 - "My new fighting technique is unstoppable!"

6 - Life has been better since the invention of the Prettierometer!

7 - Aquaman proudly displayed the phone that linked to JLA headquarters!

8 - "Get me 2007 right now!  That's right... Y! Music... ‘Framed!'""

9 - "Wow.  ‘Don't ask, don't tell.'  What a concept."

10 - Hey!  Maybe Duran Duran can tell Jack where the Island is!

11 - Proof that the Duranies had a peel!

12 - Supersized Gummo is an angry Sentient Bubble!

13 - It was unexpected, yet somewhat thrilling, when the blog began to write itself.

14 - "I have no freaking idea where Aquaman is!"

15 - "Set sail for metaphor, boys!"

16 - "Nope, not the same team at all."

A simple narrative, reinforced by relevant visuals. A chorus that doesn't have to draw on the saccharine, catchy hooks so often found in pop music. Demure women and strapping he-men.

Simon and the boys must be back!

"Try yi yi not to bruise it" is classic.

Ah, the 80's.. when the Bubbles could dance freely and my musical tastes were squarely focused on Warrant's "Cherry Pie."

The World of Men has diminished now and the paltry offerings of Radiohead, Super Furry Animals and other "gag bands" can barely make me smile 1 mile wide, let alone ten.

Bubbles! Free us from this musical monotony!

psssh, what do you know about paint sir!
