Songs That Got Away

Posted Tue Mar 17, 2009 6:00am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

I was reading that Chris Martin is all bummed out. Not about Bono calling him a "wanker," but rather about giving away what he considers "the best Coldplay song of all time" to Natalie Imbruglia.

I guess he'd make more money if the song (called "Scar" and recorded for Imbruglia's upcoming release, "Come to Life") appeared on a Coldplay album. Or maybe he's afraid he's written all the good tunes he's going to write and won't be able to afford any more of those fake Sgt. Pepper's jackets.

Either way, Martin is not the first famous musician to regret hearing his song performed by another artist. Many celebrated singer-songwriters over the years have given away some of their very best tunes.

Here's my list of the Top 10 Songs That Got Away. These dudes are probably still kicking themselves, at least until they get the royalty checks every month. Hey, Chris Martin, wanna record one of my songs? I won't regret it, I promise.

"Lady"

Written by Lionel Richie for Kenny Rogers

"Crazy"

Written by Wilie Nelson. Recorded by Patsy Cline

"Fire"

Written by Bruce Springsteen. Recorded by the Pointer Sisters

"(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding"

Written by Nick Lowe for Elvis Costello

"Come and Get It"

Written by Paul McCartney for Badfinger

"I Feel For You"

Written by Prince for Chaka Khan

"All the Young Dudes"

Written by David Bowie for Mott the Hoople

"Manic Monday"

Written by Prince for the Bangles

"Me and Bobby McGee"

Written by Kris Kristofferson for Janis Joplin

"Nothing Compares 2 U"

Written by Prince for Sinead O'Connor

Well I'm guessing that Prince isn't kicking himself since he did it three times so he must have known what he was doing (at least by the third time). In any case, who's to say that if the songwriters had recorded the tunes themselves they would have been that successful? Wait a minute, some of them did.........

2. Gerry -
There's also Elvis Costello's "Girls Talk", which became a big hit for Dave Edmunds.

3. DUDE -
As carla s said..."Wait a minute,some of them did"....and guess what?...They weren't as good as the covers.

4. mikez34 -
Well, Willie recorded Crazy himself so probably not that much.

What the DUDE said.

How about that 'Bleeding Love' song that the little pop-diva mangled and would've sounded WONDERFUL in the original One Republic's tones?

...Some of those songs were better by the singers that got them though. Just not the one I mentioned.

Yeah, LADY did kinda get away........ from 6 digit pay checks. I'm pretty sure Lionel and Kenny made millions....

"Rockin' Into the Night" was originally written by the band Survivor(mostly known for the song "Eye of the Tiger"), but was made famous by .38 Special. Also, the song "Blinded by the Light" by Manfred Mann's Earth Band was originally written by Bruce Springsteen

This is LAME. Where is the research that the songwriters regretted this? I call BS on the premise of this article.

Most of these songs did well because the song was written well AND performed well.

The Mighty Quinn also was recoreded by Manfred Mann and written by Bob Dylan

What little people realize is that songwriters often make more from hits than the actual artist.

12. Keith -
Willie Nelson has written more #1 songs that he didn't perform than any songwriter in history...

Yep. I definitely agree with Carla S... Prince would not have made that mistake three times. And, I must say I like each of those songs better than if Prince had done them himself. His voice is different and maybe not right for the songs. He was smart enough to know that and get out of the way by having someone else record it. It really speaks highly of Prince's song writing ability and business sense. Funny, coming from a man with such a big ego!

I rather see Manic Monday sung by a hot chick.

All I can say is that nobody wanted to hear The BeeGee's in the 80's and did alot of this, and they didn't even make this list.

16. Too soon old, too late smart -
How bout Richie Havens & All Along the Watchtower, generously handed off to Bob Dylan. Richie does it best!

17. tb -
Prince got paid..He could care less!!

Oconnor is still singing this song? Christ..find a new one honey!

I always thought that most of Badfingers music sounded very Beatle-ish.
And maybe or maybe not,David Bowie regretted giving Iggy Pop,"China Girl".
Iggy did it better

I cant believe Smokey Robinson was left off this list. He wrote so many hits for other people. My girl by the Temptations was just one of many that he wrote.
