Does Anyone Really Want Their MTV Anymore?

Posted Fri Sep 5, 2008 7:00am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Twenty-seven years ago MTV aired its first video, the Buggles' "Video Killed The Radio Star." It was an apt choice, even though radio continued to cruise for another 20 years, until XM Radio and the Internet finally stamped it dead. MTV was the last great musical revolution. It kept this high school kid home on many afternoons when I should have been in class. It was the last time I cut school or work for anything.

What a difference 27 years makes.

This Sunday MTV hosts its 25th annual Video Music Awards. It might as well be the 25th annual KMET Awards. Remember KMET? Of course you don't. It's an old Los Angeles classic-rock radio station. And it's dead. Dead just like radio. Dead just like MTV. The revolution is long over, and MTV is just another in a long line of corporate stooges trotting out corporate stooge bands trying to pass themselves off as something anti-establishment. It’s filled with a bunch of reality nothingness celebrating a life of consumerism. The "M" used to stand for "music." Now it stands for "meaningless." EmpTV. Empty. It's all one self-conscious, soulless bore.

Ah, but on August 1, 1981, it was magic. Nothing but '80s video goodness and the whole world in front of us. Big hair, padded shoulders, and lots of guitar hooks. Here are the first 10 videos played that day in order. Let the good times roll.

1. THE BUGGLES “Video Killed The Radio Star”

Ground zero for MTV. Co-founder Trevor Horn would go onto future MTV successes with the bands Yes and Art of Noise.

2. PAT BENATAR “You Better Run”

Born Patricia Mae Andrzejewski, Pat and her lead guitar player, Neil Giraldo, would marry in 1982. They're still together and they still rock.

3. ROD STEWART "She Won't Dance"

Rod the Mod was pushing 40 when MTV debuted in 1981. He was recycling his old band Faces on this tune, but who knew?

4. THE WHO "You Better You Bet"

Another veteran act that had an early '80s MTV makeover. Kenney Jones was on drums replacing the dearly departed Keith Moon. Coincidentally, Kenney was in Faces with Rod Stewart. Six degrees of Rod...

5. Ph.D "Little Suzi's On the Up"

Going for the cred factor, MTV aired a video from a one-hit wonder U.K. band consisting of two former members of the Jeff Beck Group. Tesla covered the tune in 1986.

6. CLIFF RICHARD "We Don't Talk Anymore"

This one rounded out the trio of videos from slowly aging rock dudes. Cliff Richard was the ripe age of 41 when he made his MTV debut. He was a major heartthrob in the U.K., but in the U.S? Not so much.

7. THE PRETENDERS "Brass In Pocket"

If you've read my Chrissie Hynde post, you know she was my first rock crush. She wrote the book for rock bad girls. This video was the best thing on MTV that first day. It’s still one of the best things the channel ever aired.

8. TODD RUNDGREN "Time Heals"

The former Utopia front man was pushing the limits of early music video production on Day One, with lots of pre-computer trickery that inspired a generation of Mac users.

9. REO SPEEDWAGON "Take It On the Run"

"Heard it from a friend who..."  What can I even say about this? What would the '80s be without REO?

10. STYX "Rockin' the Paradise"

What's the only thing better than a slammin' REO riff? Some Styx concept-album rock. It's no Tommy, but it's got that classic rock bombast. Only two years later, Styx would up the ante with 1983's "Mr. Roboto." YES!!!

I tend to not even channel-surf through any of MTV's channels, because they hardly ever have music on them now, and when they do, it's basically the same format, despite multiple channels. They need a rap channel, and put all the rap there. MTV Tres (latin) has a growing amount of non-latin music, verifying many viewers' suspicions that all MTV does is promote a new channel, claiming it will be music, like they did with VH1 back in the day, and corrupt it as soon as possible with reality tv, and/or stupid game shows, and/or yet another block of rap/R&B. I watch Fuse. If MTV ruins that for me, I will not watch music on television.

Ya, MTV sucks now! I love the Emptv line, classic!

63. CatK -
I'll never stop loving the fact that one of the first ten videos played on MTV was Todd Rundgren's "Time Heals." It was very cool to watch it again here.

Whoever compiled this list needs a life almost as badly as I do.

Yep, I too remember when it used to be MUSIC TV. It's a low down dirty shame what it is now. Thank goodness for Sirius on DISH, all music, whatever I want and NO commercials. MTV...I miss ya!

66. __A_YAHOO_USER__ -
As soon as the rap and hip hop urban scum took over it killed MTV...it wasnt meant for that, and the idiots there lost a whole generation of rockers, which translates into lost ratings and yes...lost merchandising

I DONT EVEN WATCH MTV ANYMORE-MTV WAS MEANT TO SHOW MUSIC VIDEOS AND NOW ITS ALL BULL CRAP SHOWS THAT DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH VIDEO VIEWING-I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY QUIT THE ALL AROUND VIDEO SHOWING-WAKE UP MTV AND FORGET THE REALITY SHOWS - THERES TOO MANY OF THEM OUT ON OTHER CHANNELS - BRING BACK MUSIC VIDEOS - PEACE OUT

RTV - my bad - MTV sucks! I can't remember the last time I watched MTV. Actually, I can. It was the 2007 VMA's and that was the worst awards show that I have ever seen in my life. Although I do get a MTV channel called MTV Hits which does play videos 24 hours a day, it seems as if though 90% of the videos are hip hop & R&B. I like Fuse and VH1 classic so much better.

The only way to make MTV stand up and take notice is to hit them where it hurts. If everyone stopped watching the mindless crap they are showing then maybe they'd give us back our "Real" MTV! I say BOYCOTT!!!

70. Connie -
I also miss the old MTV

The closest thing to videos on MTV is like the other MTV channels with videos 24/7. Besides that its just reality shows

i wish i was around when they played all videos! i remember this one channel called the box that me and my sisters used to watch all the time that had mvids, but anywho;;i absolutely hate mtv the only time i'll watch it is in the morning and i usually don't even watch it then! i hate all the stupid reality shows, it should be called rtv aka reality television cause thats all it is now!

73. chad -
MTV should change their name to RTV (reality TV) Do they even show music videos anymore? Kind of useless to name your channel Music Television and not play any Music Videos. I enjoyed watching MTV before all the reality shows took over. THEY SUCK NOW and should be taken off the air already

some people have commented that vh1 is an alternative to old mtv. that might have been true once, but all they show anymore are old concerts. i have an idea that i really think would go over huge. i think mtv should offer "mtv:the early years channel" it would play videos from the conception of mtv, 1981-1994. that's the year music pretty much turned into the drivel it is now. if you like this idea, let mtv know.

I was there for the first video ever shown on Mtv. I watched videos for hours. Now i can't even watch a second of Mtv. What ever happened to the AWSOME Headbangers Ball on Sat nite? Now it's cribs and this persons house and that persons house. I don't care about what happens in somebody else's house!I don't want to see Brett Michaels, I want to see vids of Poison, Def Leppard, Ratt, Skid Row, Pantera, Metallica, AC DC, you get my point. Hell i would like to see something other than Rap on Mtv. There's other music out there. The whole world hasn't gone Ghetto. Bring back the MUSIC to music television.

Thanks piscesheat, im 16 and i completely agree with you. I hate when people act like rap is the only thing wrong with music it just shows how ignorant people can be. I remember Beavis and Butthead i loved that show. MTV sucks now and the only thing i watch on there is Making The Band.

78. rad -
this is not right! NY punk band Kruat was one of the early vids on MTV. Your list is wrong.

john m,
singling out rap and hip hop as being what killed MTV is a little thick headed don't you think? I can remember when MTV only played Grunge band and alternative types of music for most of the time. I'm not against that kind of music, its just not my preference of music to listen to. MTV use to be another way an artist can bring their music to their fans, or display new artists and new music. So saying rap and hip hop brought demise to MTV is a little shortsighted since there are alot of people who also listen to those types of music also. The popularity of MTV was brought down my themselves, MTV and their programs.

Mtv needs to play better music all they play now is rap! and im not a big fan well not really a fan at all of rap! They also need 2 play more music of course its called music television not reality show television!
