Does Anyone Really Want Their MTV Anymore?

Posted Fri Sep 5, 2008 7:00am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Twenty-seven years ago MTV aired its first video, the Buggles' "Video Killed The Radio Star." It was an apt choice, even though radio continued to cruise for another 20 years, until XM Radio and the Internet finally stamped it dead. MTV was the last great musical revolution. It kept this high school kid home on many afternoons when I should have been in class. It was the last time I cut school or work for anything.

What a difference 27 years makes.

This Sunday MTV hosts its 25th annual Video Music Awards. It might as well be the 25th annual KMET Awards. Remember KMET? Of course you don't. It's an old Los Angeles classic-rock radio station. And it's dead. Dead just like radio. Dead just like MTV. The revolution is long over, and MTV is just another in a long line of corporate stooges trotting out corporate stooge bands trying to pass themselves off as something anti-establishment. It’s filled with a bunch of reality nothingness celebrating a life of consumerism. The "M" used to stand for "music." Now it stands for "meaningless." EmpTV. Empty. It's all one self-conscious, soulless bore.

Ah, but on August 1, 1981, it was magic. Nothing but '80s video goodness and the whole world in front of us. Big hair, padded shoulders, and lots of guitar hooks. Here are the first 10 videos played that day in order. Let the good times roll.

1. THE BUGGLES “Video Killed The Radio Star”

Ground zero for MTV. Co-founder Trevor Horn would go onto future MTV successes with the bands Yes and Art of Noise.

2. PAT BENATAR “You Better Run”

Born Patricia Mae Andrzejewski, Pat and her lead guitar player, Neil Giraldo, would marry in 1982. They're still together and they still rock.

3. ROD STEWART "She Won't Dance"

Rod the Mod was pushing 40 when MTV debuted in 1981. He was recycling his old band Faces on this tune, but who knew?

4. THE WHO "You Better You Bet"

Another veteran act that had an early '80s MTV makeover. Kenney Jones was on drums replacing the dearly departed Keith Moon. Coincidentally, Kenney was in Faces with Rod Stewart. Six degrees of Rod...

5. Ph.D "Little Suzi's On the Up"

Going for the cred factor, MTV aired a video from a one-hit wonder U.K. band consisting of two former members of the Jeff Beck Group. Tesla covered the tune in 1986.

6. CLIFF RICHARD "We Don't Talk Anymore"

This one rounded out the trio of videos from slowly aging rock dudes. Cliff Richard was the ripe age of 41 when he made his MTV debut. He was a major heartthrob in the U.K., but in the U.S? Not so much.

7. THE PRETENDERS "Brass In Pocket"

If you've read my Chrissie Hynde post, you know she was my first rock crush. She wrote the book for rock bad girls. This video was the best thing on MTV that first day. It’s still one of the best things the channel ever aired.

8. TODD RUNDGREN "Time Heals"

The former Utopia front man was pushing the limits of early music video production on Day One, with lots of pre-computer trickery that inspired a generation of Mac users.

9. REO SPEEDWAGON "Take It On the Run"

"Heard it from a friend who..."  What can I even say about this? What would the '80s be without REO?

10. STYX "Rockin' the Paradise"

What's the only thing better than a slammin' REO riff? Some Styx concept-album rock. It's no Tommy, but it's got that classic rock bombast. Only two years later, Styx would up the ante with 1983's "Mr. Roboto." YES!!!

MTV needs to get over themselves. The original generation of v-j's, producers, etc. didnt realize that they were creating a cultural reveloution. Today they expect that what they are doing is cool and hip and try to jam crap down our throats and it just doesn't work like that. Let the people decide what worth watching and whats not. Old school MTV worked that way. Hell..they used to have several shows where you could actually call in and vote songs off. Now I feel that if they show something and you dont like it well then there must be something wrong with you.

MTV sucks. MTV2 sucks. VH-1 sucks. VH-1 Classic sucks. Fuse sucks. Radio sucks. Television sucks.

Ah, the summer of 1984...Van Halen, The Cars, Madonna, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Ratt, ZZ Top, Tina Turner, and Chicago. I remember being glued to the tv watching these and others, over and over. And don't forget Head Bangers Ball on Saturday nights. Now this is when MTV was playing video's.

104. William -
I stopped watching that channel many years ago when they stopped playing music videos.

I want my MTV back! I stopped watching it over 10 years ago. Reality shows are crap. Get rid of all those teenie bopper shows, please! They need to start showing more music for a change. I started watching VH1 Classics a couple years back...they show all the best music videos from every decade.

M-TV what the h....
It seems I remember seeing the Stray Cats, and a few other cool videos on some station loooong ago... before it became... Drop-to the-flo-and-flop-like-a-ho TV.

I am so sick of reality shows I could scream!
Nobody with a brain in their head lives that way any way.

.... but music videos!.... it required thought! It required dance! It required coreography (did I splle that write?) ... it
cost money...

M-TV has crossed the border into the next corporate thang... it's boring, and a waste of perfectly good air waves....

xoxoxo

Ah yes, I do remember the Mighty Met! That's KMET to you non-LA peeps and zygotes.

But the question which begs to be asked is this:

HOW IS IT THAT THEY CAN HAVE A MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS SHOW WHEN THEY DON'T PLAY MUSIC VIDEOS ANYMORE???

MonotonyTV, MoronTV, call it what you will....it sucks. Yeah yeah, they aren't catering to my generation anymore...what a shame, just because I got older and wiser doesn't mean I wouldn't love to watch music videos.

Guess I will go ahead and give my money to Microsoft and just download them onto my Zune.

Sorry MTV. You snooze, you lose.

I'm 24, so I don't remember the 80's realm of MTV. But I do remember when they showed cool videos more often, and when they didn't, they showed awesome animation (i.e. - Beavis and Butthead, Daria, Liquid Television...) Now it's all reality crap with spoiled brats that all look the same, horrible reality shows, and corporate punks.

Where's the OLD MTV!?

I missed comment number 114....by JON... seems a perfectly reasonable deduction to me...

I May be the oldest one here (45) i was around when MTV was MTV.I remember i had to pay extra for it on my cable subscription.I Remember the old commercials and characters like,Randy of the Redwoods,Mojo Nixon and of course "rock blocks" hosted by "Downtown Julie Brown"and interviews by the VJ's.And later came YO! mtv raps,Remote Control, and of course HeadBangers Ball.Did you realize Neil Giraldo is the first guitarist to be on MTV? I I do miss the first few seasons of "The real world into the hawaii season.I guess i am an old school guy

Ahhh, yeah, I remember the 80's...well most of it anyway...MTV playing ALL THE TIME with me & my friends just hangin' out. I loved the 80's music. I haven't watched it in years, seemed like it went to the rap channel then reality tv junk. I guess some people watch that stuff and I'm probably out of touch, maybe there really is a market out there for that sort of junk or the channels would't be filled with it...sad. Videos used to be an art form, an expression or extension of the music. Maybe there is a smart exec out there that will bring it back to what it was?

About ten or twelve years ago there was a channel called The Box. People would call in and request a video by number. I thought it was great, since MTV didn't show videos anymore, but then MTV bought it out and ruined that channel as well.

Headbangers Ball (the original with curry and rachtman), YO mtv raps(with doctor dre and ed), singled out, beavis and butthead, real world, road rules, and of course Michael jackson...... thats the MTV I remember

I was there On the first day it was magic! That time is gone, but to the younger ones here it was so cool! It aired at such a perfect place in time I was like 16 than. Oh how I miss the MTV of that era. They need to go back to music all the time mayby some Bevis and ButT-Head even though I was not a fan it was clasic. I thought MTV2 was for the Rap music and R&B anyone who sings that style stuff but they got ofended and pulled the race card and to prevent law suits MTV plays them all the time. You know the RAP people have awards shows just for RAP R&B artists only no whites if we had a mostly white style awards show they pull out that card again! I think MTV should ballance all styles of music and from all over the world it should be for everyone! Come on MTV get a clue play all styles from all eras. No one was ment to be offended by this comment all music is good and should get equel time so it makes all happy that is what the MTV was supposed to be for music enjoyment for all.

Wow these video bring back memories! Thanks! I was only 13 when MTV premiered and I stayed up all night watching the same videos over and over. Now I'm on iTunes buying The Pretenders, The Who and Styx :)

119. Tracy -
Some of the early shows that MTV showed were pretty interestion "Liquid Television" ect but alas even at that point MTV was losing steam already and was playing more spring break game show stuff, what happened to the days when Headbangers Ball , Yo MTV Raps and real video's use to be played? No its like a teen magazine with all the shows and the type of bands (I use the word loosly) they market and force feed the public now

It was good till about late 97 early 98. After that it went downhill. I do remember going home sick and watching videos in 7th grade.
