Does Anyone Really Want Their MTV Anymore?

Posted Fri Sep 5, 2008 7:00am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Twenty-seven years ago MTV aired its first video, the Buggles' "Video Killed The Radio Star." It was an apt choice, even though radio continued to cruise for another 20 years, until XM Radio and the Internet finally stamped it dead. MTV was the last great musical revolution. It kept this high school kid home on many afternoons when I should have been in class. It was the last time I cut school or work for anything.

What a difference 27 years makes.

This Sunday MTV hosts its 25th annual Video Music Awards. It might as well be the 25th annual KMET Awards. Remember KMET? Of course you don't. It's an old Los Angeles classic-rock radio station. And it's dead. Dead just like radio. Dead just like MTV. The revolution is long over, and MTV is just another in a long line of corporate stooges trotting out corporate stooge bands trying to pass themselves off as something anti-establishment. It’s filled with a bunch of reality nothingness celebrating a life of consumerism. The "M" used to stand for "music." Now it stands for "meaningless." EmpTV. Empty. It's all one self-conscious, soulless bore.

Ah, but on August 1, 1981, it was magic. Nothing but '80s video goodness and the whole world in front of us. Big hair, padded shoulders, and lots of guitar hooks. Here are the first 10 videos played that day in order. Let the good times roll.

1. THE BUGGLES “Video Killed The Radio Star”

Ground zero for MTV. Co-founder Trevor Horn would go onto future MTV successes with the bands Yes and Art of Noise.

2. PAT BENATAR “You Better Run”

Born Patricia Mae Andrzejewski, Pat and her lead guitar player, Neil Giraldo, would marry in 1982. They're still together and they still rock.

3. ROD STEWART "She Won't Dance"

Rod the Mod was pushing 40 when MTV debuted in 1981. He was recycling his old band Faces on this tune, but who knew?

4. THE WHO "You Better You Bet"

Another veteran act that had an early '80s MTV makeover. Kenney Jones was on drums replacing the dearly departed Keith Moon. Coincidentally, Kenney was in Faces with Rod Stewart. Six degrees of Rod...

5. Ph.D "Little Suzi's On the Up"

Going for the cred factor, MTV aired a video from a one-hit wonder U.K. band consisting of two former members of the Jeff Beck Group. Tesla covered the tune in 1986.

6. CLIFF RICHARD "We Don't Talk Anymore"

This one rounded out the trio of videos from slowly aging rock dudes. Cliff Richard was the ripe age of 41 when he made his MTV debut. He was a major heartthrob in the U.K., but in the U.S? Not so much.

7. THE PRETENDERS "Brass In Pocket"

If you've read my Chrissie Hynde post, you know she was my first rock crush. She wrote the book for rock bad girls. This video was the best thing on MTV that first day. It’s still one of the best things the channel ever aired.

8. TODD RUNDGREN "Time Heals"

The former Utopia front man was pushing the limits of early music video production on Day One, with lots of pre-computer trickery that inspired a generation of Mac users.

9. REO SPEEDWAGON "Take It On the Run"

"Heard it from a friend who..."  What can I even say about this? What would the '80s be without REO?

10. STYX "Rockin' the Paradise"

What's the only thing better than a slammin' REO riff? Some Styx concept-album rock. It's no Tommy, but it's got that classic rock bombast. Only two years later, Styx would up the ante with 1983's "Mr. Roboto." YES!!!

Ah, back in "the day" MTV used to be an emotion! You would tune in and hear the music and see the artists and there was no political agenda - it was Music TeleVision - and I could watch for hours - but that died long, long ago

162. Shelly -
thot i was the only one who felt so! You must check out MTV India. Its just Hindi movie songs all day n night. We dont need MTV for that. It was good like say 10 years back. But now its not even worth turning it on. n they started VH1..... n now its got more reality shows dan ane ntertainment channel!

The new MTV has destroyed an entire generation. Generation 'Y' is as useless as it comes and I blame MTV.

I was watching live as MTV went on the air! Couldn't tear myself away from it for about a year or so...Today, it's just a blur on the way to VH1 classic or the (sometimes) great sunday night concerts on HDnet. Yea, MTV sucks now and has for a long time. HOWEVER, YOUTUBE is the place to go for all those great old R-n-R videos. Everything ya could possibly want is posted by people who know what they want...and they DON'T want their MTV!!!

165. Kelly -
MTV, are you listening??? Everyone wants to dump the reality shows and get back to basics - bring back the videos ASAP!!!!

166. Sergio -
YEAH. Where's the music? Its all about juvenile issues.
That's not music-television. I haven't watched MTV in years now.
And don't miss a thing about what I saw the last time I tried.

MTV SUCKS!!!!!I hate what the so called music television channel has become. A bunch of reality tv crap. Somebody please start a true MUSIC TELEVISION CHANNEL!!!!!!!

169. Pierre -
Does anyone remember how you used to stay up watching MTV until your favorite video played? And how VH1 was the Adult Contemporary channel? Those were the good old days, and sadly they will never come back.

If video killed the radio star than the internet killed MTV and all video stations. I'm in my mid thirties and we watched MTV growing up because it was the only channel playing videos. Even if you thought the bands they played sucked you watched them because they were the only game in town. Now there are a ton of web sites I can log onto and listen or watch only music and videos that I like in genres I like. The internet has taken away any draw for vidoes as who wants to watch videos that someone else chooses? Digital Cable also provides music and videos on demand. MTV sucks but it is just the start of TV becoming obsolete and us evolving into the digital age.

Mtv is for idiots.

Go to You Tube...put in "mtv sucks my balls" and watch the subsequent video delights!

All I can say is that it echos the sentiments of the frustration of the ever-present cheesy consumerism of this god-forsaken decade.

Long live YouTube!!!!

When me and my sister were in highschool... We would spend our entire evenings watching any and every station on TV that played music videos. We could not stand MTV for what it had and has become. I remember the first few so called "reality" shows... I wanted to barf. Leave that crap to showtime or OnDemand or something. We ALL know it's 90% stage... sometimes 110% staged.

Im sorry that all you guys are like 100 and don't know are care about getting with the times; but those old people jumping around in extremely ugly clothing talking about nothing means nothing now. Yes mtv plays to many crappy rap videos, but if you guys got out your houses and went anywhere were people have fun, thats what your going to hear. Also, those reality shows are better then every band thats listed up there, ozzy and narvanah are the only old bands that should be played.

175. Hail Mary -
They air shows like America's Next Top Model and a bunch of spoiled teenagers having birthday parties. Like what the hell does that have anything to do with music at all?!? We should physically boycott MTV or something.

176. Chinky Kim -
give me Great American Country and forget the rest mtv proved how sick it was with that idiot host on the vmas

I am 35 years old and I grew up with the original MTV as we knew it then. It was the channel to watch when you finally were able to get cable. My brothers and I were hooked. I believe that it was the perfect fit in terms of pop culture for the greatest era ever... the 80's. It just fit. Unfortunately... it has surcome to the ridiculous need to feed us with garbage reality and poorly scripted "wanna be" reality shows and it leaves a bad taste in our mouths. It just goes perfectly with the carbon copy type music you here on the radio today. What was once an iconic figure in cable television is now just another channel to skip by when flipping through with your remote. It want my MTV... BACK!!!

178. Chris -
"EmpTV" really says it all.
I haven't watched since Beavis and Butt-head went off. I remember the 80's. It was like radio for your eyes. Now it's crap, and not just because music sucks.

179. Angel -
I miss Beavis and Butthead, too. I remember them trying to play it again, on MTV2, along with the new Celebrity Deathmatch. Who are the kidding? Those died right when childhood and good ol' days died.

I wasn't even allowed to watch VH1 and MTV growing up, but I did anyway. I loved the music. Now, I'm sure my parents couldn't give a crap.

Thanks MTV, for making Reality a big ol' sham.
