Six Degrees of Michael Jackson

Posted Thu Jun 25, 2009 4:22pm PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

I never met Michael Jackson, but it seems like I was always just a few degrees away from him. In 2001, I ran a foundation for Quincy Jones, the producer of "Off the Wall, "Thriller," and "Bad." Quincy shared endless stories about Michael and his genius. His affection for him was palpable. Anthony Marinelli, the producer of my 2005 album, "Thank You, Shirle-e May," programmed the synthesizers on "Thriller." We used the same Moog that he used on "Billie Jean."

When I was growing up in L.A. in the late '70s and early '80s, Michael Jackson's was the first face on TV that looked like mine.  At Flippers Roller Rink, I rose my fist in solidarity when "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" was blasted on the P.A. system. It was 1979, and I was at my sixth grade graduation party. I was the only black kid in my class. After hearing Michael, my 'fro stood a little taller, and I swear some of the girls skated a little closer.

Despite the sometimes sordid turns his life took, Michael Jackson always held my fascination, like he did for most of us. Just as his rise in a pre-Obama world was evidence that even a black kid from Gary, Indiana, could make it, his strange, slow descent into chronic oddness was a constant warning that any of us is one step away from the edge.

Now that he's gone, I pray that Jackson's music speaks louder than anything else. His music clearly was his life. And in the end, his music added to our lives more than any of the rest of the sideshow events.

Excuse me now, while I play my "Off the Wall" vinyl, recall the 'fro Michael and I once shared, and have a good cry. It's a bitch saying good-bye.

Well, it came as a shock, it did. Alas, Mr. Jackson was one of the few artits in the dubious category that pop is that had talent and managed to not be embarrasing to bring up. Everyone can just dance to "Thriller" and not feel too embarrassed.

Sad business it is...

I remember my brother and I jumping up and down when Thriller won 8 Grammys in 1984. We practically grew up listening to Michael Jackson. His Thriller album was the first album I ever bought finally after saving up enough money to buy it. I loved him then, I love him now and I'll always love him forever.
May his soul rest in peace.

I also grew up listening to and singing to and dancing to Michael since the age of 4. He may have had troubles in his short life, but his gift is so hard to describe in words. Looking over the range of content in song and movement and his influence in the music and especially the pop world, thats truly a huge talent and I feel his music and messages deep in me. Hope the love spreads.
God bless you Michael. salaam dear brother.

The Jackson Family has my greatest simpathy! I listened to Michael since I was in preschool and that was the early 70s.All of his music touched my heart! There wasn't a song that I didn't relate to. However! Michael will always be loved. From my generation, children and grandchildren because his music will always be played in my household! I will be one of his fanes that will continue to play his music and I'm sitting here right now listening to all of his oldies.I remember a time when Michael was coming to Richmong California, however he didn't show but Latoya and Randy showed and of course I got there artigraphs.

It's so sad to hear and know that the king of pop has left us at such a early age. I feel sad knowing all his music including his amazing videos will be with us to always remember, but knowing he will not be here with us anymore. Michael is performing for all the legends from up above including the most famous legend of them all "Jesus Christ"!

A fan for life here in Honolulu,Hi
