Michael Jackson and Friends: From Pop Stars to Presidents

Posted Fri Jun 26, 2009 4:44am PDT by Amy & Nancy Harrington in GetBack

Michael Jackson was not just a talented musician, he was a true genius. And even though his legendary contribution to the music world has been overshadowed the last few years by accusations, trials, and changes in his physical appearance, he was never at a loss for friends. By all accounts, he was sweet, kind, and had a childlike outlook on life that was contagious. People just wanted to be with him — from pop stars to Presidents. So we take a look at the King of Pop and just SOME of the famous people who clamored to be by his side, from Elizabeth Taylor to Nelson Mandela.

Michael Jackson and Tatum O'Neal, circa 1978
In 1978 Michael Jackson took Tatum O'Neal on a once-in-a-lifetime date to a bank vault in Beverly Hills to celebrate Jackson's gold records.

Michael Jackson and Cher, 1983
Cher hosted Michael and his brothers (aka the Jackson Five) on network TV three times in the '70s – in '72 and '74 on "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour" and in '75 on the "Cher Show," where they sang a medley of their hits "I Want You Back," "I'll Be There," "Never Can Say Goodbye," "The Love You Save," and "Dancing Machine."

Olivia Newton-John and Michael Jackson, 1983
"Grease" co-stars Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta appeared in Jacko's star-studded 1989 music video for "Liberian Girl," along with everyone from Steven Spielberg and Sherman Hemsley to Don King and David Copperfield.

Emmanuel Lewis and Michael Jackson, 1983
You can keep your sparkly gloves and military epaulets; our favorite Michael Jackson accessory of the '80s was, without a doubt, the adorable Emmanuel Lewis.

Michael Jackson and Nancy Reagan, 1984
It's difficult to decide who was more fashionable when Michael Jackson visited with First Lady Nancy Reagan at the White House in 1984.

Michael Jackson with Brooke Shields, 1984
We're not really sure if what Brooke Shields and Michael Jackson were doing was a traditional form of dating, but they did hang out a lot in the early '80s, crossing into each other's worlds at events like the Oscars and American Music Awards.

Sean Lennon and Michael Jackson, 1986
Sean Lennon appeared in Michael Jackson's film "Moonwalker." Look for John's son in the scene where a group of children watch Michael leave a club and get attacked by a crowd of gangsters with machine guns.

Michael Jackson and Princess Diana, 1988
Michael Jackson and Princess Diana first met at his 1988 Wembley Stadium concert. But when the lively royal heard that Jackson planned to drop the groupie-themed song "Dirty Diana" from his set out of respect to her, she asked him to keep it in.

Slash and Michael Jackson, 1990
Michael Jackson and Guns 'N' Roses guitarist Slash were an odd but magical musical pairing on Jacko's 1991 album, "Dangerous," and on the 1995 release "HIStory." They made legendary appearances together at the 1992 and 1995 MTV Video Music Awards and on the "Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special."

Madonna and Michael Jackson, 1991
Madonna and Michael Jackson might not have ever cut a record together, but the Material Girl did take the King of Pop as her date to the 1991 Academy Awards.

Michael Jackson and Macaulay Culkin, 1991
When Macaulay Culkin rose to fame with the "Home Alone" movies, he was befriended by another legendary child star, Michael Jackson. Culkin can be seen cranking the amp up to the "Are you nuts!?!" level in Jackson's 1991 "Black or White" video.

Michael Jackson and Marcel Marceau, 1995
GetBack URL:
Michael Jackson's legendary moonwalk was inspired by world famous mime Marcel Marceau's skit, "Walking Against the Wind." Michael and Marcel planned an HBO concert together in 1995, but the event was cancelled when Jackson became ill.

Michael Jackson and Magic Johnson, 1995
Basketball great Magic Johnson made a cameo appearance in Michael Jackson's ancient Egyptian-themed video for 1992's "Remember the Time," along with Eddie Murphy and Iman.

In 1999, Michael Jackson met South African President Nelson Mandela when the pop star traveled to Cape Town to announce his charity concert project "Michael Jackson and Friends: The Adventure of Humanity" to benefit the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, the Red Cross, and UNESCO. The concerts raised over $3.3 million for the charities.

Britney Spears and Michael Jackson, 2002
At the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, Britney Spears brought Michael Jackson onstage to give him a birthday cake, but Jackson misunderstood and thought he was being presented with the Artist of the Millennium Award. We still think he should have been given the honor.

Reverand Al Sharpton and Michael Jackson, 2002
Michael Jackson and activist Al Sharpton joined forces in 2002 to protest what they decried as unfairness and racism in the music business.

My heart goes out to all his loved ones-and especially his three beautiful children (whether they were in fact his or not-he raised them and was always their Father). He will truly be missed. I grew up listening to MJ-and I enjoyed watching him sing/perform. He was absolutely amazing-and will never be forgotten!

RIP Michael, but I do not believe that just because of one great artist we have music today. He was a good artist and indeed inspired others, but people sing and rap and rock and roll because they love to do such music and record.....Then they become famous and we have another Michael Jackson. I respect his music, but not Michael as a person. He was charitable and I commned him for that, but he was also, a perv. For all you Michael fans - continue to grieve - you have a right to do so, but he was not PERFECT and made music what it is today......My condolences to his family.PEACE

We'll all miss you Michael Jackson!!!!! Rest In Peace!

I hope that Michael's children are all kept together. Separating them would be very bad for all of them. No matter what others think about Michael he was still thier father and that is all that is important. They do look like very happy kids when you see them in pictures. I hope that is true and his family seems to be stepping up to the plate to help them. My respect goes out to them for that.

47. Bertram -
p.s. to the family. we have lost a famous member in our family as well.our brother carter cornelius.member of yhe cornelius bro and sister rose. back in 1991.its going to be a hard long road, but just believe that god is encharge of everthing! it will make life easier to deal with, amen

I agree with you daphineb. I thought I was the only one who thought that the media was focussing on all the bad stuff and not spending enough time on how he affected music, and like yahoo!musicuser said there would be none of the great artist and dancers thats out there now had there been no Michael Jackson.... SO SHOW SOME RESPECT! peace and love MIchael you will be missed.

His music was great, but he was a sick pervert. I'm wondering if he molested his own children as well. He got off the first charge because he paid out 23 million dollars. Anybody else, would still be sitting in jail.

Jacqui,
Thank you so much for your kind words, well thought, elegant and literate response to Michael Jackson’s death. As a true and loyal fan of his music and his talent, it’s very nice to see other people who share the same sentiments as me. I have been a fan of MJ’s for a very long time and his music has had a tremendous impact on my life. Over the years, I’ve leaned to judge and accept Michael Jackson for what he had to give, not the lifestyle he lived. He has earned the honor “The Legendary Michael Jackson”
Thanks,
mj

I love MJ!! he is the greatest performer and rightly deserves to be called the King of Pop!!! His dancing, singing, his style just broke all sorts of barriers and he ended up giving us so many classics!!!

As a side, I think he was inherently a good man...Sure people with that much talent kind of fame and following, not to mention his lack of a childhood...and the papparazzi playing a major role...he ended up going crazy..and i think psychologically, he went for a toss, but if you look at his works, from We are the World, to songs like the Man in the Mirror, the Earth song, Black or White, they all tried to send a message...and make a difference for the good. In the end, i think we should remember that he was a good man and honestly tried to make a difference...and MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE! love always Michael!

May God Bless you and your family always. I,m 49-years old, and I grew up watching The Jackson 5 when they were coming on as the cartoon, and I dare not miss. I really loved Mr. Jermaine, who was handsome, but not cute as michael was. Smile; Just to let the family know, I'm praying for you all and I send my love to you. Just keep the Faith, and always stay together as a family no matter what any one say. we love you, Ilove you all, but God loves you first. from the N.O.504

57. laura -
and of course we all beleive he was not a child molester, all this people think he was,but let me tell you somenthig, you all can think like that, because you all are ignorant,go to schools and learn,ignorants....michael jackson will always be remember from all around the worldddddddddddddddd! you got that? have a nice day....go michael,go michael!!!! iorana...

Farrah a great reputation. Get your head out of the sand. She too had a mess of a life. Her past was filled with drugs. Should I go on? But we all have baggage. Concerning Michael, o.k. he was a great artist but he had some heavy duty problem. From a look at the photos above, his song said it all dosn't matter if your black or white. Who was this freak. A humanitarian? Was he even human?

59. Sanna -
i will always remember him
HE ROCKS

60. hank -
Yes he was very talented, but why are we so celebrity obsessed in this country?
