Michael Jackson and Friends: From Pop Stars to Presidents

Posted Fri Jun 26, 2009 4:44am PDT by Amy & Nancy Harrington in GetBack

Michael Jackson was not just a talented musician, he was a true genius. And even though his legendary contribution to the music world has been overshadowed the last few years by accusations, trials, and changes in his physical appearance, he was never at a loss for friends. By all accounts, he was sweet, kind, and had a childlike outlook on life that was contagious. People just wanted to be with him — from pop stars to Presidents. So we take a look at the King of Pop and just SOME of the famous people who clamored to be by his side, from Elizabeth Taylor to Nelson Mandela.

Michael Jackson and Tatum O'Neal, circa 1978
In 1978 Michael Jackson took Tatum O'Neal on a once-in-a-lifetime date to a bank vault in Beverly Hills to celebrate Jackson's gold records.

Michael Jackson and Cher, 1983
Cher hosted Michael and his brothers (aka the Jackson Five) on network TV three times in the '70s – in '72 and '74 on "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour" and in '75 on the "Cher Show," where they sang a medley of their hits "I Want You Back," "I'll Be There," "Never Can Say Goodbye," "The Love You Save," and "Dancing Machine."

Olivia Newton-John and Michael Jackson, 1983
"Grease" co-stars Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta appeared in Jacko's star-studded 1989 music video for "Liberian Girl," along with everyone from Steven Spielberg and Sherman Hemsley to Don King and David Copperfield.

Emmanuel Lewis and Michael Jackson, 1983
You can keep your sparkly gloves and military epaulets; our favorite Michael Jackson accessory of the '80s was, without a doubt, the adorable Emmanuel Lewis.

Michael Jackson and Nancy Reagan, 1984
It's difficult to decide who was more fashionable when Michael Jackson visited with First Lady Nancy Reagan at the White House in 1984.

Michael Jackson with Brooke Shields, 1984
We're not really sure if what Brooke Shields and Michael Jackson were doing was a traditional form of dating, but they did hang out a lot in the early '80s, crossing into each other's worlds at events like the Oscars and American Music Awards.

Sean Lennon and Michael Jackson, 1986
Sean Lennon appeared in Michael Jackson's film "Moonwalker." Look for John's son in the scene where a group of children watch Michael leave a club and get attacked by a crowd of gangsters with machine guns.

Michael Jackson and Princess Diana, 1988
Michael Jackson and Princess Diana first met at his 1988 Wembley Stadium concert. But when the lively royal heard that Jackson planned to drop the groupie-themed song "Dirty Diana" from his set out of respect to her, she asked him to keep it in.

Slash and Michael Jackson, 1990
Michael Jackson and Guns 'N' Roses guitarist Slash were an odd but magical musical pairing on Jacko's 1991 album, "Dangerous," and on the 1995 release "HIStory." They made legendary appearances together at the 1992 and 1995 MTV Video Music Awards and on the "Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special."

Madonna and Michael Jackson, 1991
Madonna and Michael Jackson might not have ever cut a record together, but the Material Girl did take the King of Pop as her date to the 1991 Academy Awards.

Michael Jackson and Macaulay Culkin, 1991
When Macaulay Culkin rose to fame with the "Home Alone" movies, he was befriended by another legendary child star, Michael Jackson. Culkin can be seen cranking the amp up to the "Are you nuts!?!" level in Jackson's 1991 "Black or White" video.

Michael Jackson and Marcel Marceau, 1995

Britney Spears and Michael Jackson, 2002
At the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, Britney Spears brought Michael Jackson onstage to give him a birthday cake, but Jackson misunderstood and thought he was being presented with the Artist of the Millennium Award. We still think he should have been given the honor.

Michael Jackson and activist Al Sharpton joined forces in 2002 to protest what they decried as unfairness and racism in the music business.

"I grieve for him; but I also grieve for the culture that created and destroyed him. That culture is ours' and it is a lethal and brutal one: with fame and celebrity as is core value, with money as its sole motive, it chewed this child up and spat him out. I hope he has the peace now he never had in his life. And I pray that such a genius will not be so abused again."-Andrew Sullivan on MJ.

In general, Michael Jackson had a VERY good heart. He was a great singer, entertainer, pop royalty. He was just awesome!
Why was his career ruined? The media ruined him as well as killed him. People like LongTimePhillyFan, ect... He spent a lot of his money on Neverland so he could do good for kids, and what happened? ALL THE BOY'S PARENTS TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET SOME MONEY. Now how evil is that? I don't think the boy's mother even had a job! A lady who didn't have money ruined his life. I tracked the whole case, and I never believed it. And whoever does believe it has the most dirty, hateful, and gullible mind I've ever seen. HE WAS RULED INNOCENT OF THE CHARGES, PEOPLE! He LOVED kids, and he would NEVER hurt them. We should be paying attention to the REAL sex offenders that are molesting kids every day and go to jail for less than a year, and get out of prison eary for GOOD BEHAVIOR, then go molest kids AGAIN, and stop insulting an innocent, good hearted, and talented man. How are you going to feel when the families who sued him are so overwheighted by guilt and admit Jackson's innocence in ten years?

He's dead, worry about yourself and stop hating. You have no right to judge! He's with God now.

Rest In Peace MJ! Your in Heaven now.

A part of my childhood has died. I admired MJ from a young age; I was infatuated with him. It comes by no surprise that he was the only entertainer that affected me so much to tears. I have always and will always have good memories of him. All of the allegations made against him mean nothing to me. I only wish, I only wish... that people and the media could have forgiven him as readily as they forgave the priests of the Catholic Church. If only only the Catholic Church received as much scrutiny as MJ did during his life. We should have been more forgiving and I am so sorry that he had to suffer as he did. He deserved so much better; besides he gave so much to so many.

TITO WAS THE BEST JACKSON

I watched all the videos you mentioned including the clips of the Cher and Sonny and Cher shows and loved them and cried. There is also at least one appearance, and I am pretty sure two, on the Carol Burnett Show, which are wonderful. These are the Jackson 5 of course, and they are all truly wonderful. But it was always Michael, wasn't it? You just couldn't take your eyes off of him. He was amazing. Thank you God for letting us have him for a little while. I wish he had known how much we loved him.

Michael Jackson was a brilliant singer and dancer who will be missed greatly. All the people saying bad things about him seem to forget he was found innocent of what he was accused of.

el rey del pop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! te queremos....

Michael Jackson will be misses by alot of people that grew up in his time and I was a big fan of Michael Jackson's. He is the reason that we have MTV he was the pioneer that broke that mold yes the video's of the 80's where cheesy but music will never be the same. I was living in Mainz, West Germany when thriller came out and that is one song that I love to listen to at Halloween. Michael was such a good dancer that the artist that we have today will never be able to dance like Michael did and he had alot of talent. All I ask is that everybody that has been saying negative comments about Michael please allow his family to morn the death of their child 4 he is the reason that the Jackson's are very well known. RIP MICHAEL JACKSON.
