Broken Vows of Rock 'n' Roll Celibacy

Posted Tue Jul 21, 2009 8:37am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Kevin Jonas can finally get laid. The oldest Jonas brother is engaged, which means he'll soon be having sex. Maybe. You never know when the purity
ring goes into full hibernation.

The Jo Bros may have brought the chaste lifestyle to the Hot Topic crowd, but they're not the first to try it. Though not as popular as weed, there are a few musicians who have experimented with being celibate. Here some tales of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll without the sex. As you may have guessed, most of these vows of celibacy don't last very long. Rock 'n' roll without sex is like... well... rock 'n' roll and drugs. And the drugs always lead to sex. Really, you need to quit the drugs first. But then without the drugs, what else can you do to pass the time? It all leads back to sex. Damn you, Jonas Brothers and your purity rings of fire!

Katy Perry
The Grammy-nominated singer started 2009 with a bold statement. In January, she told TV Guide that she wouldn't be kissing any girls or anyone else for the while year. Was it because her mother, an Evangelical, finally persuaded her to change her promiscuous ways? Was it due to her heartache over her breakup with Travis McCoy a month earlier? Whatever is was, it didn't last long. The next day, Katy posted on her blog, "Please, celibacy for the whole year? I'd rather die." Her and McCoy were back together in April '09.

Lenny Kravitz
Since his 1993 divorce from Lisa Bonet (due to rumored infidelity), Lenny Kravitz has been romantically linked to hot women the world over, including Brazilian model Adriana Lima and Australian actress Nicole Kidman. All of the global bed-hopping must have taken its toll, because in 2005 Kravitz went celibate saying, "I'm going to do it with my wife and not everybody else." In '09 he says he's still (not) going strong, but it's getting difficult. He says, "I love being around women, but if you're seeing someone, you've got to explain..."

Jessica Simpson
Jessica Simpson's romantic life is a celibacy cautionary tale. At 22, she married 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey and told the world she was a virgin on her wedding night. They filed for divorce three years later, and ever since Simpson has been making up for lost time. She's dated John Mayer and Dallas Cowboy Tony Romo... whose team wished he'd stayed celibate. He was so whipped he blew the season. Cowboy fans gave Simpson the nickname "Yoko Romo." The two have since split.

Rivers Cuomo
The Weezer mastermind took a two-year vow of celibacy before his 2006 marriage to Kyoto Ito. Rivers Cuomo was characteristically blunt about the experience, confessing, "I tossed and turned in bed all night. I hung on for too long when girlfriends hugged me hello or good-bye (they had to pry me off). I spent extra time in the shower, soaping and scrubbing, wistfully. I even had my very first night-time accident..." He and Ito had a daughter in '07, so we know he's had at least one night of glory.

Morrissey
During the Smiths' '80s heyday, Moz was always purposefully contradictory about his sexuality but stuck to a repeated line that he was "dramatically, supernaturally, non-sexual." His song titles like "Hand in Glove" and "Girlfriend in a Coma" only helped to fuel the asexual fire. However, in 2006, Morrissey told NME magazine that his celibate days were over. Although, he didn't settle the debate as to whether he shares his bed with a man or a woman.

Sandy 'Pepa' Denton
Sandy "Pepa" Denton married fellow hip-hop artist Treach (of the group Naughty by Nature) in 1999. They had a daughter and divorced in 2001. Denton has lived a celibate lifestyle since (no word on exactly how long). Now, it seems, she's ready to take off the purity ring. She's enlisted in a new VH1 reality show with Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas from TLC in which they both look for romance. We hear two of the Jonas Brothers are available.

the jonas brothers suck...they should go back to promotional appearences at "justice" and "hollister"

2. Kuroma Essen... -
How unfortunate that people still make the mistake of saying "rock and roll" and then mention nothing but pop artists (except Lenny Kravitz of course).

3. D33PPURPLE -
Kuroma, Weezer and Morrisey fit into rock and roll.

Anyway, Amos, witty commentary. I'm still waiting for my "night of glory"...wait...

Don't the Jonas Brothers know that you should test drive before you buy?
