Bye-Bye, Bling: A Recessionary Note to Rappers Everywhere

Posted Tue Oct 28, 2008 6:00am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Yo, my hip-hop brothers, some words of wisdom: these are hard times. Don’t know if you heard, but we’re in a recession. People are losing their homes. Folks’ retirement funds are tanking. People are pawning their jewelry for gas money.

It’s time to reel in the bling. The days of ’90s excess are over and out. All the gold ropes and gold teeth have got to go. You need to trade them in for cash and then hold on to it. Stuff it in those high-tops until the banks are safe again. No more shopping sprees. No more Hummers. No more Cristal. Back to basics, folks. You are not immune. Your record label could go belly-up like Lehman Brothers did, and you may find yourself standing behind Joe the Plumber at the check-cashing joint.

Yes, you’ve all come a long way from the days of Mr. T-level bling, but you’ve got many more miles to go. Pull off the gold chains and bring on the humility. Get yourself a Prius. Carpool to the next VH1 Rap Honors show. Recycle those kicks instead of tossing them after the first scuff mark. Yes we can, my hip-hop brothers. Yes we can.

Here are five of the worst offenders. I’m calling these folks out so they can step up and lead the way for the rest of the hip-hop nation. Do the right thing.

SLICK RICK

Slick never got the memo that not only are the '90s over but so are the '80s. He's the embodiment of hip hop excess (and bad behavior; the dude spent five years in prison for attempted murder). He's become a reformed citizen since his jail time but Slick Rick is still Bling Offender Number One.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS

My man from the Neptunes likes to brag about his Ferrari Enzo and his Mercedes SLR McLaren. Sure, he’s got a trucker cap to give him working-class cred, but he wears chains so big they threaten to knock him over.

T-PAIN

T-Pain’s got a grill full of metal and a big ol’ chain that could buy him 10 vocoder machines.

BIG BOI

He’s got a closet full of big minks and bug chains that need to go to the consignment store. While he’s at it, maybe he can persuade André to join him back in the studio.

LIL JON

His teeth alone could feed a middle-class family of five for a year. Jon, cash in the mouth metal and get some old-fashioned enamel caps. Do it quick while you still have your insurance plan. You can use the money to buy some clothes for the half-naked ladies in your videos.

FLAVOR FLAV

The granddaddy of bling. Yeah, the clock probably doesn’t cost much, but think of the statement it would make if Flavor started wearing a Casio. Besides, the news is so bad lately, who wants to know what time it is anyway?

It's their money and they can spend it anyhow they want. Personally I think all that bling stuff is ugly, tasteless, juvenile and low-life.

It's some real haters posting. Most of the rappers on this list lived their whole lives in a recession until they came up and wasn't nobody telling Trump to stop building towers or telling Ted Turner to stop buying all the land in the country. Yall haters are some real special people. Now rappers supposed to stop shining? Man whatever tell that to AIG and the rest of them clowns. Tell them bailout boys to stop shining.

43. Giovonni -
You people really need to stop hating on rapper. What you need to complain about is how rich and powerful Donald Trump,Bill O'Reily, and George Bush. Now all the people I listed are very rich and powerful and they are not doing anything to help people in this "RECESSION". so shut up be quiet and let Hip Hop be already.

you know it seems that a lot of people here simply just ... hate .... we live in a new age where individuals are free to wear w.e they want and express themselves however they want. If rappers choose to wear "excessive bling" then that is their choosing, they obviously worked hard enough and or did something that most individuals aren't in order to get to the lavish style that they are in now. Yeah sometimes some rappers go beyond what is necessary, but then again so do Saudi royalty and Government officials ( behind closed doors or even publicly ). So stop hatin' on rappers etc and worry about yourself and getting your own money up. And btw, rappers aren't stupid, some are, just like people we see in our everyday life. They don't always want to put out what they do but are told to, its thier job, just like we have to do things to fulfill the position of our jobs... so do they ......

and thats real talk

okay so then why don't celebrities also turn in their BMW's and 18 motorcycles they have in their garages? why do they need a 10 bedroom house for only 3 people? why don't they stop takin their thousands of dollars vacations that they're on? that was a very very stupid article

46. Vida -
u are all ignorant, u get that $$ and tell me u wouldnt do the same.. fast money gets spent fast, it aint like they cant remake it..

who cares, u should be writing about something important, or at least important rappers slick rick and big boi are the only ones on that list with skill

I thought the day would never come. Thank god. I am soooo sick of these rapping self-centered immature braggarts. Rapping. Didnt these people get enough Dr.Suess as a kid?

Why should rappers (or anyone) have to put away what they have worked for or earned because we are in tough eceonmic times. I am no baller, but why should i hate on the next person because of what they do with their money. This whole article is based on haters . . . seriously come on now.

I don't spend my money on bling, but if Lil' John or LL or T.I. or anyone else wants to spend their money on whatever, how is that effecting you (author of this article and other commenters)? It's not . . . so stop hatin.

Hatin is a true sickness and that's exactly what this article is all about. Yahoo Music articles are some of the worst on yahoo serously.

Yes, bling is dumb, and yes, the money could be better spent, but it's their business what they spend their money on. I bet some of you put a lot of money into your facy computers, or clothes, or something you like. They just use their money in a really, really ugly way.

51. Misanthropic -
Gold and platinum are at all time highs. Dollar for dollar are worth more than cash. Bling is actually a good investment in this age of devalued global currency. Do research before you compose lame articles. Besides, rappers have bling as their status symbol. I dont hear you asking Hollywood actors to turn in their 20K Armani suits or actresses to stop spending 20K on Hermes bags...????

Besides, in every down economy the entertainment business has been recession proof.

52. lilshwayze -
i think that they should have to help out the world especially right now, but let em wear as much bling as they want. they make millions. if thats what they want to spend their money well so be it.

53. Digital Xpression -
No more guns!

its bout time

55. Yahoo! Music User -
It's their money, if Flavor Flava goes bankrupt no one will give a damn, he is not a bank just some weird guy that likes to know the time and viking hats...

56. Yahoo! Music User -
If it weren't for white kids that buy and listen to rap music, there would not be any bling bling.

57. Charidy -
lol too funny

58. Mrs. F. -
I personally could not care less if people want to go buy needless and wasteful things. It's their money, let them do whatever foolish things they want with it. When they spend it all and go broke, maybe then they will come to grips with true reality.

59. Ed Hochuli -
Buying gold and diamonds is actually a sound investment in sour economic times. Those rappers were making much better investments than the old white rich dudes investing in stocks that just took a big ol sht. At least bling IS something. Playing the stock market is like building a house of cards with the window open. First strong gust - all your money's gone - the house was an illusion.

60. Jesus808. -
Get off their dilsnick. I don't give a damn what they wear. That ish doesn't affect me nor is it going to put food on my table. What a waste of space. Move on to other topics writer and stop wasting your time on chains you can't afford. There's more important things happening than focusing on a rappers neck wear. WHO CARES.
