Rock 'n Roll (and Tattoos) Never Forget

Posted Wed Oct 29, 2008 6:01am PDT by Shawn Amos in GetBack

There’s this Matt Groening Life In Hell cartoon from way back that shows two old dudes who look like prunes and are covered in tattoos. One says to the other (I'm paraphrasing), "Oh, I see you were an idiot in the '90s too."

Andre 3000 is a long way from the old folks’ home, but he told the press last week that, "I had six silly tattoos done when I was young, and I bitterly regret them."  He's thinking about having them removed but is wondering if the scars would look even sillier.

We're probably the most tattooed generation ever. More than 40 million people in America have at least one tattoo. Musicians rarely stop at one. That's too bad, because a whole bunch of those guys are eventually going to look really dumb playing bingo with their fellow senior citizens. The only thing worse than an old rocker is an old, tattooed rocker.

Here's my cautionary list of musicians who’ve made the biggest tattoo mistakes. Keep this blog post with you when you're drunk some Saturday night and headed for the studio to get inked.

JON BON JOVI - THE CORPORATE TATTOO
Jon reminds me of the Office Space-type dude who hides his Superman tattoo underneath his suit to remind him he's a rebel deep down inside. You know that guy. He listens to Bon Jovi records.

JOHN MAYER - PREP SCHOOL GUY TATTOO
One day John Mayer will wake up and remember that he's a middle class white guy from Connecticut whose mom was a teacher and dad was a high school principal. He'll look at his full-sleeve body art and wonder what made him pretend he was Henry Rollins’ half-brother.

OZZY OSBOURNE - SENILE OLD GUY TATTOO
No one wants to see their grandpa muttering to himself in the back yard, turning up his hearing aid, trying to rub the "O-Z-Z-Y" off his knuckles.

TOMMY LEE - "I USED TO BE RIPPED" TATTOO
"Mayhem" looks cool on your stomach when you’re in your '30s and cut. When 60 hits and you've got a big-ol’ beer belly? That just says, "Sad Old Man."

DAVE NAVARRO - "WHY DOES THAT WOMAN HAVE TATTOOS?" TATTOO
Here's the problem with Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro: He looks more like his ex Carmen Electra each year, which makes the body art seem even more out of place. Ten years from now, he'll look like one of the Gucci-wearing, Rodeo Drive trophy wives with ink all over. It won't go down well at the country club.

Tattoos are stupid. I don't know of anyone who does not eventually regret getting one. There is a reason why most people are drunk when they do this! They are free advertisement for how reckless and impulsive you are in your thinking and probably in your life in general. Get over it people!

62. FrankR -
Tattoos are trash and people that get them are trash. Fortunately, many of those people get Hepatitis C, and that lasts forever too. Have fun, scumbags.

tattoos tell two things about a person one they drink and two they make bad decisions when they drink!!!

this article sucks.. tats mean something to some people and they will never regret them, even when they're old. Who are you to judge someone with a tattoo anyway? i guess now we can start judging people according to the clothes they wear or how they style their hair..

LOL,

it shows the TRUE TRASH at its best, they have nothing else to show for.LOL, ghetto ASSS CRACKERS, its jsut so sad, what classless, cultureless, clueless, cracker jacks. i love it. its a trailer stamp trash, its for people that are dying for attention. these people are not gonna live that long to begin with, low IQ'd hillbillies, redneck republicans. peasants, look into your history or the lack of. do a little reading instead of saving your money and getting a tattoo, LOL.

LOSER society, it just define white trash and others that follow this style. I LOVE IT, thanks for the laughter, tralier trash (and the other races too).

Seriously People, This is still a free country, isn't it? The way you are going on, you are acting like you have a say in these other peoples lives. If I want to get tattoos, that is my decision. "I dont like the hat you are wearing, take it off." Then starts censorship,"I don't like that show you are watching, we can't let them air that", Then of course banning; "You have a different belief then me, you can worship that way." Don't you remember anything about history? When we start down this road about telling others ADULTS what they should or shouldn't do, we start to give up our freedoms. If you don't like it, don't do it. But don't judge others on their opinions and rights to live their own life.

Old people with tats are cool. Actually, judging people by the ink on their skin is just as bad as judging people based on the color of their skin. Shawn Amos you're a bigot!

Only idiots get tattoos.

73. J7 -
I bet the moron reporter that wrote this still lives with his mommy and she won`t let him get any...

74. Annoyed by jerks -
why does this story sound like an attack?
is the writer 80 years old? tats and rockers go together better than hot pie and ice cream.

this article is pretty lame. let people do what they want

someone said here that john mayers has been respected by the japanese to get the tattoos and that he lived 1 year in japan. i never heard anything more stupid. whomever said that is flat out lying. in japan tattoos are not part of the culture and do not inspire respect. the kid has some yakuza look alike tattoos that could of been done in japan but that has nothing to do with being respected by the japanese and to earn any respect it takes years and years(decades) not a year... seriously, your opinion and knowledge of japan, japanese and the culture needs improvement. btw, i lived in japan over 10 years.

77. Yahoo! Music User -
I agree this was stupid and a waste of time! As for OZZY.... he is a FREAKING NUT!

78. Yahoo! Music User -
TALK ABOUT A STUPID ARTICLE. TATS ARE TO EXPRESS YOURSELF OBVIOUSLY SOMEONE HASNT DONE THEIR HOMEWORK!

79. Robin -
y do you people even care?!? its their own body, let them do to it what they want.

Yey more pointless self rightous opinions that dont matter, There are nothing wrong with tattoos if you dont like them then dont get one dont hate people that have them. we all get old and ugly so it dosent matter what you have on you no one is going to want to look at you anyway, hell it may even be more intersting to try and figure out what they used to be as you shuffle around your wrinkled skin. If you dont understand something be openminded about it rather than shun it like most people seem to do.
