5 Reasons Why...Devo Are the Coolest Nerd Band Ever

Some groups - like Weezer, Barenaked Ladies, and Flight Of The Conchords - like to play up their nerdiness while secretly harboring dreams of graduating from chicken-chested dorks to Slash-like tanned, muscle-bound, dreamy rock gods. And then there's Devo: true nerds' nerds. The Akron, Ohio, band - featuring brothers Bob and Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald and Bob Casale - never tried to overcome their four-eyed awkwardness. No, from their 1978 Brian Eno- produced debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, on they reveled in their mythologized world of geek touchstones, from their signature energy dome hats and biohazard suits to Island Of Dr. Moreau references, spasmodic beats, and a universe of outcast characters with names like Donut Rooter, Booji Boy, Mongo the Mongoloid, and Dr. Byrthfood.

1) Because their videos for songs like "Jocko Homo" were so far out there 30 years ago, we're still trying to figure them out.

2) Because they were fine with the subversive act of licensing "Whip It " to a Swiffer commercial, but they just sued McDonald's for ripping off their signature energy dome hats worn by the New Wave Nigel Funmeal doll.

3) Because for reasons no one will ever be able to explain, they once backed up Jermaine Jackson on a televised Halloween special on the song “Let Me Tickle Your Fancy.” Seriously.

4) Because they appeared on the geektastic 1980s sitcom Square Pegs playing Muffy Tepperman's bat mitzvah.

5) Because, in addition to writing music for everything from The Rugrats to The Sims to Wes Anderson movies (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou) and Liquid Television, Mark Mothersbaugh is totally teaching his fans' kids how to draw on Yo Gabba Gabba.

Jermaine + Devo = AWESOME TV

How did I not know about that?

5. Jeffrey -
Devo is probably one of the best examples of bands that could do covers and really make them their own...(see "Satisfaction") They had a great live show too.

6. Steve P -
What about Mark Mothersbaugh in a baby mask playing synth in a crib as the band backs Neil Young on Hey Hey My My?

7. Gregory -
Whip it was also used in a Duncan Yo-Yo Commercial of the mid 90's. They even played and sang it for that commercial :)

Select appropriate shoes: we suggest two.

A reason not mentioned is that they are members of the Church of the SubGenius and you can't get much nerdier than that.

10. Bobby Brill -
They were cool until they did Devo 2.0 for Disney and changed the lyrics of to "Girl You Want"- not so cool anymore

LOVE DEVO!!!! There was NOBODY like them and so not too many people got with them. For sure they have a cult following. Saw them at the Greek in L.A. a couple years ago and they totally owned the whole show!!!!
