Do You REALLY Have to Comeback?

Posted Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:26am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Over the past couple of weeks, we've had the Jackson 5, Led Zeppelin, and Guns 'N Roses all threaten to return with new tours or albums. One of the oldest truisms of rock 'n' roll is this: every band on the way down is a band on the way up. Just as soon as your favorite artist becomes cliché, cheesy, and dated you can be sure they'll return to remind everyone why they mattered in the first place.

Or not.

Frankly, some bands don't ever need to come back (that means you, Asia). Some bands forget what a comeback means (hint: if you leave half the band at home it's not a comeback). The road is littered with bands looking for your comeback vote. It's often a desperate act by groups who should've stayed in the rehearsal hall rather than appearing on a stadium stage. Here's a list of the year's most ill-advised returns. While they're out touring, I'll be at home listening to their albums.

Led Zeppelin

Robert Plant got it right. He agreed to play one gig for the late, great Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records who signed Zep to the label. The gig was a success by all accounts, and Plant went on to tour with Alison Krauss in support of their insanely beautiful roots record, Raising Sand. Meanwhile, the rest of the Zep say they want to keep playing and that they'll find a new singer to fill in for Plant. WHAT? Has anyone told Jimmy and John Paul about that Journey reunion without Steve Perry?

Smashing Pumpkins
Billy Corgan invites the drummer, leaves everyone else at home, and calls it a reunion. Sorry, we call it self-indulgence.

Jackson 5
Does anyone need to see the Jackson sideshow on parade again? Not even Michael has the courage to go through with it.

The Cure
There should be a rule. Dudes over 25 can't wear mascara and lipstick. In the '80s the look was sensitive and cool. Now, it's just creepy.

Mötley Crüe
Their recent Saints of Los Angeles comes nowhere close to their late-'80s alcohol-induced heyday, but I give total props to Mick Mars. Battling a hip replacement and a degenerative spine disease, he's still able to play punishingly loud. That's gotta count for something.

New Kids on the Block
What's worse than a teenaged, bubblegum Boston boy band? A middle-aged, bubblegum Boston boy band. Life is hard enough without this sad display.

I saw NKOTB at the Verizon center in DC. It was a great show, even better than I thought!!! They looked amazing!!!!!!! Not to mention the fact that their concerts have been selling out left and right!!! So I'm not sure everyone would agree with you article.

Leave new kids on the block alone they are awesome and yes they needed to comback!!!!!!!!

Whoever wrote this clearly did not see the New Kids on the Block show and probably hasn't listened to their new album either. They are both awesome! They put on an amazing show and every single person in the entire arena was on their feet for 2 hours straight. This was not an educated article, because I have not seen anything resembling a "sad display". Maybe it's not everyone's type of music, but their comeback is HOT!!!

No way, I love NKOTB and MJ!! NKOTB are great! I love thier new song SINGLE! Plus, if you don't want to hear them, or hear about them then don't listen!!!

You see, Shawn Amos is a washed up ex-musician from old crappy Los Angeles bands who never made it anywhere. His underlying hostility of people who "made it" is obvious. If he was just another faceless internet buffoon with an opinion, it would be one thing, but considering his failed attempts at musicianship and stardom, it says a lot about his opinion and how flawed it is.

His dad?...he was famous...."Famous Amos" to be exact.
Shawn?...he's the "Not So Famous Amos", and he seems a bit jaded.
Theres nothing sadder than seeing an ex-musician who's hopes were dashed, to be passing judgement on people who made it HUGE in a profession he always aspired to.
Please, Shawn...find something else to do....you look pathetic.

I saw the New Kids 3 times and bought the VIP tix every time. They have gotten better with age. They are hot as HELL now.
And the shows were all packed.
So what the hell is this dude talking about? STFU.

The NTOKB concert was awesome! They still got it! They are all sexier now!

NKOTB sold 70 MILLION albums from 1984 to 1994, and their new album sold 100,000 copies in it's first week. How many albums have YOU sold, Mr. Amos? If you don't like it, don't buy it. Leave the CD's for those of us who've been waiting 15 years for them.

the nkotb is awesome . love there new cd ..

Ok, I was a NKOTB fan in Jr High and saw them in concert last month in Chicago. THEY were so energetic, the show didn't stop! It was the best money I have spent on a concert! Exceeded all my expectations! I truly enjoyed it and keep youtubing moments from it. Why can't it be enjoyable? Why do people like yourself have to publicize what really is only your opinion? LOVE YA NKOTB for life!

I'M SURE I'LL GET A LOT OF SLACK, BUT I WENT TO THE NKOTB CONCERT AND BOUGHT THEIR NEW CD. THEY ARE STILL AMAZING. I THINK THEY ARE BETTER THAN BEFORE. IT WAS DEF ONE OF THE BEST CONCERTS I'VE BEEN TO RECENTLY. JUST B/C THEY ARE "MIDDLE AGED" DOESN'T MEAN THEY SUCK AND DON'T DESERVE TO STILL MAKE MUSIC. THERE ARE TONS OF GROUPS/BANDS THAT ARE WELL OLDER THAN NKOTB AND STILL MAKING MUSIC.

You know, I'm glad that NKOTB came back.I felt like I was a kid again. It gave me a chance to go back in time and remember the days when I didn't have to worry about losing my retirement, my home, or my job.

Um, I saw KNOTB in concert for their comeback. It really wasn't that bad. Then I bought the CD for the hell of it and I was driving around with my sister, who is into the Jonas brothers now, and I noticed she and her friend were digging the songs saying, "omg who is this? This song is good." I waited for a few tracks to tell them it was NKOTB. They about crapped. How the heck did the Spice Girls miss this list when they weren't around that long not to mention they only had like 2 good, or what you consider good for the 90's, songs.

34. Kimberly -
NKOTB was good before but they are better now. I agree that you are just a hater. If they are such a bad comback then why are they doing so well?

35. Rueben L -
What are some of you talking about? Motley Crue was not broke up for most of the 90's in 89 they released Dr. feelgood, they had to tour right so they were together then they release decade after that then they briefly were without Vince for about 4 years then they reunited and did there greatest hits, this was all in the 90's they have been on their game since. the band has a book Tommy has a book, nikki has a book, a movie is in the making and SOLA is a amazing album! Their carnival concert was the best. They are not a reunion band.

36. Tiffany -
I am on my way to see New Kids on the Block and I can't wait!!!!

37. Luke L -
NKOTB sucks a bunch of losers trying to relive there youth....that includes the audience

38. janet g -
I agree some bands should never do comebacks, such as Loverboy, Asia and etc.. but NKOTB actually have a pretty good new cd and tour. They are not just redoing old songs they actually had new hits. Stop the hating.

AP - "So You Think You Can Dance" producer Nigel Lythgoe won't say which dancer will end up the winner on Wednesday's season finale. But he's confident predicting that guest star Adam Lambert is going to be wel… More »
