Do You REALLY Have to Comeback?

Posted Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:26am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Over the past couple of weeks, we've had the Jackson 5, Led Zeppelin, and Guns 'N Roses all threaten to return with new tours or albums. One of the oldest truisms of rock 'n' roll is this: every band on the way down is a band on the way up. Just as soon as your favorite artist becomes cliché, cheesy, and dated you can be sure they'll return to remind everyone why they mattered in the first place.

Or not.

Frankly, some bands don't ever need to come back (that means you, Asia). Some bands forget what a comeback means (hint: if you leave half the band at home it's not a comeback). The road is littered with bands looking for your comeback vote. It's often a desperate act by groups who should've stayed in the rehearsal hall rather than appearing on a stadium stage. Here's a list of the year's most ill-advised returns. While they're out touring, I'll be at home listening to their albums.

Led Zeppelin

Robert Plant got it right. He agreed to play one gig for the late, great Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records who signed Zep to the label. The gig was a success by all accounts, and Plant went on to tour with Alison Krauss in support of their insanely beautiful roots record, Raising Sand. Meanwhile, the rest of the Zep say they want to keep playing and that they'll find a new singer to fill in for Plant. WHAT? Has anyone told Jimmy and John Paul about that Journey reunion without Steve Perry?

Smashing Pumpkins
Billy Corgan invites the drummer, leaves everyone else at home, and calls it a reunion. Sorry, we call it self-indulgence.

Jackson 5
Does anyone need to see the Jackson sideshow on parade again? Not even Michael has the courage to go through with it.

The Cure
There should be a rule. Dudes over 25 can't wear mascara and lipstick. In the '80s the look was sensitive and cool. Now, it's just creepy.

Mötley Crüe
Their recent Saints of Los Angeles comes nowhere close to their late-'80s alcohol-induced heyday, but I give total props to Mick Mars. Battling a hip replacement and a degenerative spine disease, he's still able to play punishingly loud. That's gotta count for something.

New Kids on the Block
What's worse than a teenaged, bubblegum Boston boy band? A middle-aged, bubblegum Boston boy band. Life is hard enough without this sad display.

I could see it if most of these bands didn't do well. But the fact remains that most of these bands still play sold out shows. And not just fans from their generation, but new fans who most wern't born in some of these bands peek come to see them. So use better judgement when you say that these bands should not have made a comeback. Because the truth is they still inspire us.

NKOTB comeback is a pathetic attempt to reclaim their youth and the same goes for the fans. Its time to move on to the current decade please.

I was one of those people who said omigod when I heard the NKOTB were releasing another album. I thought it would be incredibly cheesey, and I never liked them back in the day anyway. But I can't stop listening to their new music! Surpisingly good, maybe slightly cheesey pop, but its awesome! And they all look pretty damn good too.

46. Jiwa -
i LOVE that NKOTB got back together. i didnt like them the first time around as i do now!! as nina said...they 've aged well.

47. AngelaR -
I went to NKOTB concert in which I paid $375 a ticket and they still have a huge fan base. Their reunion tour has been really sucessful and they put on an awesome show.

Hey, the Cure rocks! Back off about them!

Whom ever wrote this should not be allowed to write!! Ur crazy for thinking that Motley Crue is a bad that needs a comeback when they never really left!! They are awesome and as well as The New kids on the Block!! Ive seen them twice since they've been back and for u to say such things is completely ridiculous!! They are HOTT older men and they deserve to rock out just as much as the next one!!

50. Josh C -
Hey bonehead... The Cure never broke up, and if you are advocating that then you are IGNORANT!! I saw them at Sasquatch this year, and they absolutely killed.

I just saw NKOTB last night and I have to say they were amazing!

I think it's clear that you don't diss NKOTB. There are way more fans of theirs than there is the person who wrote this article.....who are you again?

53. Liz -
Leave New Kids on the Block alone! I'm glad they're back. I went to 2 "Sold Out" Concerts, and everyone around me were older than me (in their late 20's and 30's).

As a musician...I understand why these acts all want to get back out and do it again...but sometimes enough is enough! All of the aforementioned bands should haver hung it up a long time ago! I knew the end of the world was coming when Jimmy Page let P-Diddy or whatever the hell he calls himself now do a blasphemous version of the Zeppelin classic" Cashmere"...what a piece of crap that was!!! All in all once you've made it sit back and enjoy all that you worked so hard for...maybe an occasional show but touring and new albums generally prove to be a disaster!

D'arcy Wretzky and James Iha are hardly the soul of the Smashing Pumpkins. Meanwhile Wretzky has gotten into drug trouble in recent years and Iha split to join Perfect Circle. Billy and Jimmy were that band, not Wretzky's simple bass lines or Iha's backing guitar and on most of the albums....Billy recorded all of the guitars himself.

As for the Cure...they never left man. Wild Mood Swings was alright but 2000's Bloodflowers was vintage Cure. They still have it going on after all of these years. It's a real shame you lump them with reunited boy bands looking for a paycheck.

new kids on the block r amazing i just went to 2 of their concerts and would go to another one. And yessss we do need them they r better then ever

57. Melissa -
NKOTB is the best comeback I've ever experienced! I just saw them in concert on Monday and it was AWESOME!!! Don't hate.

58. Tammy -
Well I was there in NYC @ The Today Show for NKOTB's kick off performance in which they even had a bigger crowd turn out than Brittney Spears during her "It" days and I just recently attended one of their sold out concerts sooo I with that being said... Guess we needed some of that Bubblegum Boston Boy Band in our lives & Jordan even pushing 37/38 yrs old had abs you only wished you could achieve...

59. Mandy -
I went to the New Kids on The Block concert in Dallas, Texas (sold out, I might add). They really put on a great show and I love their new CD and I am over 30!! GREAT SHOW!!!

I don't think this list holds up well. The bands on this list were all great at their time and that's why they can come back and sell out arenas now. Fans will always be out there and coming back for more. You can't blame them for turning a buck on it too!
