Do You REALLY Have to Comeback?

Posted Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:26am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Over the past couple of weeks, we've had the Jackson 5, Led Zeppelin, and Guns 'N Roses all threaten to return with new tours or albums. One of the oldest truisms of rock 'n' roll is this: every band on the way down is a band on the way up. Just as soon as your favorite artist becomes cliché, cheesy, and dated you can be sure they'll return to remind everyone why they mattered in the first place.

Or not.

Frankly, some bands don't ever need to come back (that means you, Asia). Some bands forget what a comeback means (hint: if you leave half the band at home it's not a comeback). The road is littered with bands looking for your comeback vote. It's often a desperate act by groups who should've stayed in the rehearsal hall rather than appearing on a stadium stage. Here's a list of the year's most ill-advised returns. While they're out touring, I'll be at home listening to their albums.

Led Zeppelin

Robert Plant got it right. He agreed to play one gig for the late, great Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records who signed Zep to the label. The gig was a success by all accounts, and Plant went on to tour with Alison Krauss in support of their insanely beautiful roots record, Raising Sand. Meanwhile, the rest of the Zep say they want to keep playing and that they'll find a new singer to fill in for Plant. WHAT? Has anyone told Jimmy and John Paul about that Journey reunion without Steve Perry?

Smashing Pumpkins
Billy Corgan invites the drummer, leaves everyone else at home, and calls it a reunion. Sorry, we call it self-indulgence.

Jackson 5
Does anyone need to see the Jackson sideshow on parade again? Not even Michael has the courage to go through with it.

The Cure
There should be a rule. Dudes over 25 can't wear mascara and lipstick. In the '80s the look was sensitive and cool. Now, it's just creepy.

Mötley Crüe
Their recent Saints of Los Angeles comes nowhere close to their late-'80s alcohol-induced heyday, but I give total props to Mick Mars. Battling a hip replacement and a degenerative spine disease, he's still able to play punishingly loud. That's gotta count for something.

New Kids on the Block
What's worse than a teenaged, bubblegum Boston boy band? A middle-aged, bubblegum Boston boy band. Life is hard enough without this sad display.

I saw NKOTB this year and they put on a wicked good show! I also really love their new CD.

62. Gary -
motley crue didnt go anywhere, they had some line up changes, but they still made music. it may not be the same as what made them famous, but they still get out there and make music. they didnt disappear like g n r, then make everyone think for years they are gonna put an album out, then allegedly finally it is coming out.

63. AliciaS -
I'm sorry but I think the NKOTB comeback is great!! I was a fan then and I'm a fan now, the good thing with them is that they retained there fans from then and got some new ones when they came back your a man that's why you picked out all the male bands where's the female bands making a come back at? I went to there concert and it was great and I took my 17 year old sisters and they loved them as well.

64. shaarda -
I LOVE THAT NKOTB CAME BACK. THEY ARE FANTASTIC AND HOT. AND YOU SHAWN AMOS IS A MORON WITH NO TALENT APPARENTLY. HMMM SOUR GRAPES MR AMOS

65. Yahoo! Music User -
So I went to 3 NKOTB show recently and they were all SOLD OUT. They killed it every night. I've seen them a total of 14 times and pray that they tour during the summer so I can make it to at least 17! People like you said they wouldn't last, but they're still kickin a$$! BTW, they're still HOT!

i loved nkotb when i was 12 and i still love them 20 years later.

and to shawn amos, you need to get a life or a job or a hobby so you'll have something better to do than sit around and write stupid, opinionated lists!

New Kids on the Block was hands down one of the best shows I've seen this year..and I go to allot. Don't knock it until you try it.

68. Ms. Wilke -
Ironically enough, I had the enormous pleasure of going to see the New Kids on the Block concert last night! It was fantastic! The boys were amazingly HOT, sang like I remember from years back and made touching tributes to people who have passed on in the years since they left the limelight. I for one am so happy to see them return! It was awesome!

69. Stacey S -
NKOTB concert rocked in Charlotte! Great Show!

70. Tiffany -
NKOTB Rocks and I went to the concert! All the concerts have sold out so obviously it has worked out well for them.

71. James -
Shawn, you dropped the ball on this article dude. I think most of these bands should do a comeback. I mean, what NEW band are you real excited about?

72. Vox -
YAHOO! needs to stop letting bitter, failed musicians write articles. Regardless on how you feel about any of these acts, they sell out any and every place they play.

73. Godsmack_Rulez -
Saints of Los Angeles was an amazing album. If that is considered as an un needed come back, then the same can be said for AC/DC's black ice. not true at all!

74. jaimee -
UMMMM Have you even listened to the New Kids on the Block new album???? I'm assuming not since you wrote this article. FYI it's amazing. Just because they are older doesn't mean they aren't hot. They are sexier then ever and news flash...their fans are older too! Most of the dates on their tour sold out in a matter of minutes. This comeback is huge for them and the fans. Someone needs to cut the jeolousy act.

75. Angela -
Wow! You certainly don't do your homework before you publish, do you? The NKOTB return is anything but sad. Perhaps it is not your favorite type of music, but their new album and current tour have received rave reviews. I was a fan as a teen and have been so excited for the chance to relieve the glory days with their new tour. I saw them in Vegas and they were truly amazing. I went expecting to feel all nostalic, but came away a new fan all over again. Let's face it, they could have put forth very little effort and still sold out shows, but they didn't. Big thanks to New Kids on the Block for amazing their old fans and attracting new ones with one of the best albums of the the year and a phenomenal tour!

76. Marlene R -
NKOTB is our PLEASURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

77. Jennifer -
Just saw Nkotb with my26 year old daughter in Milwaukee. It was great fun. She's going again with my other daughter in Broomfield, Colorado this week.
Great memories of long ago and great memories this fall!

78. -AsH- -
who cares. i love comebacks get over your self blogger

79. PP -
NKOTB rocked it in Milwaukee! It was one of the best concerts I have been to in a long time. The writer of this article obviously is just jealous that they won't have a COMEBACK article.

80. Michael -
I'm waiting to see Alice in Chains with their new singer. I loved that band in the 90's and I'm worried that I'm gonna be disappointed with their new stuff. I hope I'm wrong. They might be a band that should have stayed disbanded.
