Do You REALLY Have to Comeback?

Posted Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:26am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Over the past couple of weeks, we've had the Jackson 5, Led Zeppelin, and Guns 'N Roses all threaten to return with new tours or albums. One of the oldest truisms of rock 'n' roll is this: every band on the way down is a band on the way up. Just as soon as your favorite artist becomes cliché, cheesy, and dated you can be sure they'll return to remind everyone why they mattered in the first place.

Or not.

Frankly, some bands don't ever need to come back (that means you, Asia). Some bands forget what a comeback means (hint: if you leave half the band at home it's not a comeback). The road is littered with bands looking for your comeback vote. It's often a desperate act by groups who should've stayed in the rehearsal hall rather than appearing on a stadium stage. Here's a list of the year's most ill-advised returns. While they're out touring, I'll be at home listening to their albums.

Led Zeppelin

Robert Plant got it right. He agreed to play one gig for the late, great Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records who signed Zep to the label. The gig was a success by all accounts, and Plant went on to tour with Alison Krauss in support of their insanely beautiful roots record, Raising Sand. Meanwhile, the rest of the Zep say they want to keep playing and that they'll find a new singer to fill in for Plant. WHAT? Has anyone told Jimmy and John Paul about that Journey reunion without Steve Perry?

Smashing Pumpkins
Billy Corgan invites the drummer, leaves everyone else at home, and calls it a reunion. Sorry, we call it self-indulgence.

Jackson 5
Does anyone need to see the Jackson sideshow on parade again? Not even Michael has the courage to go through with it.

The Cure
There should be a rule. Dudes over 25 can't wear mascara and lipstick. In the '80s the look was sensitive and cool. Now, it's just creepy.

Mötley Crüe
Their recent Saints of Los Angeles comes nowhere close to their late-'80s alcohol-induced heyday, but I give total props to Mick Mars. Battling a hip replacement and a degenerative spine disease, he's still able to play punishingly loud. That's gotta count for something.

New Kids on the Block
What's worse than a teenaged, bubblegum Boston boy band? A middle-aged, bubblegum Boston boy band. Life is hard enough without this sad display.

Um can we say hater. Don't hate that NKOTB has come back sexier than ever and is still getting the women (seen a lot of guys at concert, too). They are back and hopefully for a while.

why should age matter.look at hank williams jr.,garth brooks and etc. yeah the NEW KIDS are a little older.........but some young girls will like then just like we use to.I'm 29 ,so that was a long time ago.leave them alone and let them sing, who cares.this is what is wrong with this world today..........everybody has a ugly opinion.

I saw nkotb in the detroit area and thought it was awsome...had a really great time. I also really enjoy the new cd they came out with. I was a little nervous about seeing the concert after seeing them on the Today show but they impresssed me and my girlfriend that went with me became a fan all over again.

Do not agree Zep would still rock. I just saw The Who twice and they kicked ass like it was twenty years ago.

I just missed the nkotb years, but since it is all of them, I think it's cute that they are doing the reunion thing - as long as they don't keep trying to do it

Shawn Amos...who are you again???? All these bands at one point or another were great and still are great. It's the nostalgia and the great music that the people love. NKOTB is at the top of their game. They are physically hotter than ever, sound great and I welcome them back with open arms! Motley Crue...BAD A$$!!!! Grew up on NKOTB, Motley Crue and The Cure. Love Song will be played at my wedding, could be my wedding song. You're an idiot Shawn Amos!

Oh come one. That NKTOB "Boyfriend" song is hella funny. That line, "I'll be your boyfriend til this song goes off" is classic.

@least robert plant knows that they suck live and that it's a waste of time. go see heaven and hell, @least iommi will give you your money's worth, and leave you screaming for more

The NKOTB kick a** and by the way you obviously didn't go see any of these shows. The New Kids are back and better than ever. I saw their first US show in NJ and it was amazing. They still got it (the right stuff). Besides whoever wrote this article was probably in diapers when these bands were on top so what do they know... the music of your generation sucks!!!!!!!!

I think someone needs to check their facts. Some of these bands have never stopped touring or putting out albums. What is your definition of "comback?" It's obvious that mine is different than yours.

What about AC/DC's new album? That was an awesome albumt! Why can't we give everyone else a chance?

95. Christine C -
the new kids concert was unreal. they were phenonmoneal!

Don't think you chose many acts that people don't want to see return to the stage. Maybe focus on bands like the aforementioned Asia and you'll have a better story. Led Zeppelin, Smashing Pumpkins, NKOTB...I think they all will have successful comebacks. And Motley Crue as a "comeback band"? Where have you been?

97. chan -
hehehe.. amos must be sweating with anger behind his keyboard ryt now..

98. MaRiAsTYmE -
I am thrilled NKOTB came back out, they came back strong and on an adult level, no a boyband gone wrong, kick rocks dude!

99. Lisa G -
I also went to the NKOTB concert in Cleveland and it was the best concert I had ever been to! Not to mention they all look great! Don't hate on NKOTB for doin their thing.

It's better than all the getto beats and bad poetry that replays itself on the radio ever 2 hours - one local station plays the same song every 45 minutes. I'm in Canton, Ohio otherwise known as "hitler's asscrack" so Colbert says
