Do You REALLY Have to Comeback?

Posted Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:26am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Over the past couple of weeks, we've had the Jackson 5, Led Zeppelin, and Guns 'N Roses all threaten to return with new tours or albums. One of the oldest truisms of rock 'n' roll is this: every band on the way down is a band on the way up. Just as soon as your favorite artist becomes cliché, cheesy, and dated you can be sure they'll return to remind everyone why they mattered in the first place.

Or not.

Frankly, some bands don't ever need to come back (that means you, Asia). Some bands forget what a comeback means (hint: if you leave half the band at home it's not a comeback). The road is littered with bands looking for your comeback vote. It's often a desperate act by groups who should've stayed in the rehearsal hall rather than appearing on a stadium stage. Here's a list of the year's most ill-advised returns. While they're out touring, I'll be at home listening to their albums.

Led Zeppelin

Robert Plant got it right. He agreed to play one gig for the late, great Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records who signed Zep to the label. The gig was a success by all accounts, and Plant went on to tour with Alison Krauss in support of their insanely beautiful roots record, Raising Sand. Meanwhile, the rest of the Zep say they want to keep playing and that they'll find a new singer to fill in for Plant. WHAT? Has anyone told Jimmy and John Paul about that Journey reunion without Steve Perry?

Smashing Pumpkins
Billy Corgan invites the drummer, leaves everyone else at home, and calls it a reunion. Sorry, we call it self-indulgence.

Jackson 5
Does anyone need to see the Jackson sideshow on parade again? Not even Michael has the courage to go through with it.

The Cure
There should be a rule. Dudes over 25 can't wear mascara and lipstick. In the '80s the look was sensitive and cool. Now, it's just creepy.

Mötley Crüe
Their recent Saints of Los Angeles comes nowhere close to their late-'80s alcohol-induced heyday, but I give total props to Mick Mars. Battling a hip replacement and a degenerative spine disease, he's still able to play punishingly loud. That's gotta count for something.

New Kids on the Block
What's worse than a teenaged, bubblegum Boston boy band? A middle-aged, bubblegum Boston boy band. Life is hard enough without this sad display.

Everyone on this list are lame.

NKOTB had the biggest crowd ever to come see a concert at the TODAY show to date, AND Ryan Seacrest's radio show said he's never seen people willing to fly half way across the world for any other band, but them. They have the biggest following and their concerts are still selling out. I thought they were has beens, but went to see a show in October and it was Fn awesome!

123. Joe -
Exactly!! What about Journey? They not only put on a great tour over the summer but their new album rocks the same way if not better than they did in the eighties!!

Well, I think that the New Kids on the Block are doing a great job. Their new CD was fantastic and they seem to put on a great concert. I don't think that it's bad that they're coming back. I think that it's great seeing what they can do now. It's amazing how well they are performing again and their millions of fans think so too. If you don't like the New Kids, then why not put Backstreet Boys too. They made a comeback this year too and you said nothing about them.

I just saw New Kids at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. They are even more smokin' hot than they were when they were younger. I think you don't know what you're talking about, guy.

nkotb is awesome...they can keep on touring.. obviously people want to see them..sold out means people are buying the tix.

I agree with 98% of your comments. . . BUT this is just YOUR opinion, and if the people want to re-live their. . . whatever it was, and they are willing to pay. . . cool.

ME. . . no. I was a HUGE Van Hagar fan. It was the definition of fun. You heard it in their music. . . the last tour w/Sammy, was sad, and bad. You could feel the tension. Here, Ed was SO against doing a "greatest hits album, because it meant that VH was giving up, and it pissed him off. . . Fast Forward, add "Cubic Zirconium Dave", back into the fray, and voila. . . greatest hits tour?. . . VH had WAY more commercial success with Sam, and the music showed the fun. . . Hypocrite?. . . you bet. Was the tour a sucess?. . . you be the judge.

I didnt go. . . and everyone I know that did. . . said. . . EHHHH!. . . it was alright. Not GREAT. . . but okay.

How can you say that the NKOTB comeback is sad??? Having been to there sold out concert at the Staples Center (where the screaming did not stop for 2 1/2 hrs)and seeing the reactions of women of all ages, this is definetly a comeback well recieved...Have you been to the concert????

129. Michelle N -
Get a clue, alot of these bands have had very successful comebacks, like Crue and NKOTB. Stop being jealous that even 20 years later they are still better then you will ever be.

I've never been a New Kids fan but I have to say that their new stuff is very nice.

Interesting that the Cure is on here. To have a comeback one has to go away. And since they just sold out arenas in May and have consistently released new material...I guess that makes the guy who wrote this kind of a dumbass.

132. Dainajc -
motley Crue was NOT disbanded for most of the 90s, Vince left for a while and they hired a new singer until his return. They kept going, Keep up! lol

133. Crystal -
Mr. Amos have you actually been to ever single on of these reunion shows? I went to the NKOTB show in Houston Texas and it was a great concert. They probably made in one night what you might make in a year.

134. Frank -
Greg you couldn't be more wrong about Motley Crue. They have never disbanded. They may have taken a few breaks but never disbanded. You try doing all that blow and herion you would need a break too.

135. Danie B -
I don't Led Zeppelin knows — or cares — about anything Journey does.

136. Anne -
NKOTB ROCK!

137. J B -
The Jackson Five are the Jacksons who performed well into adulthood, and became a well-oiled machine in the tradition of top R&B acts who have performed live shows for decades.

You're acting as if the the adult Jacksons didn't out-sell and out-perform groups like The Rolling Stones in the 80s and 90s.

You're wrong for that.

Terrorist attack feared after Jackson arrest

AP
Tue Dec 22, 2009 10:46pm PST

AP - Police concerns that media-hungry terrorists would attack Michael Jackson's trial as a "soft target" led to a request for federal help, according to FBI files kept on the late pop star. The documents also … More »
