Do You REALLY Have to Comeback?

Posted Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:26am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Over the past couple of weeks, we've had the Jackson 5, Led Zeppelin, and Guns 'N Roses all threaten to return with new tours or albums. One of the oldest truisms of rock 'n' roll is this: every band on the way down is a band on the way up. Just as soon as your favorite artist becomes cliché, cheesy, and dated you can be sure they'll return to remind everyone why they mattered in the first place.

Or not.

Frankly, some bands don't ever need to come back (that means you, Asia). Some bands forget what a comeback means (hint: if you leave half the band at home it's not a comeback). The road is littered with bands looking for your comeback vote. It's often a desperate act by groups who should've stayed in the rehearsal hall rather than appearing on a stadium stage. Here's a list of the year's most ill-advised returns. While they're out touring, I'll be at home listening to their albums.

Led Zeppelin

Robert Plant got it right. He agreed to play one gig for the late, great Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records who signed Zep to the label. The gig was a success by all accounts, and Plant went on to tour with Alison Krauss in support of their insanely beautiful roots record, Raising Sand. Meanwhile, the rest of the Zep say they want to keep playing and that they'll find a new singer to fill in for Plant. WHAT? Has anyone told Jimmy and John Paul about that Journey reunion without Steve Perry?

Smashing Pumpkins
Billy Corgan invites the drummer, leaves everyone else at home, and calls it a reunion. Sorry, we call it self-indulgence.

Jackson 5
Does anyone need to see the Jackson sideshow on parade again? Not even Michael has the courage to go through with it.

The Cure
There should be a rule. Dudes over 25 can't wear mascara and lipstick. In the '80s the look was sensitive and cool. Now, it's just creepy.

Mötley Crüe
Their recent Saints of Los Angeles comes nowhere close to their late-'80s alcohol-induced heyday, but I give total props to Mick Mars. Battling a hip replacement and a degenerative spine disease, he's still able to play punishingly loud. That's gotta count for something.

New Kids on the Block
What's worse than a teenaged, bubblegum Boston boy band? A middle-aged, bubblegum Boston boy band. Life is hard enough without this sad display.

I just went to the New Kids concert last night and they were GREAT!! Who are you to decide if these bands come back or not? As long as they are making great albums, selling merchindise, and performing sold out concerts...whats the difference!!! Their new album was FANTASTIC!!! Its pretty RARE that a band who has come back after 15yrs make even a half way decent album!!! Why don't you stick to what you know and leave the musicians handle their business!
I will support them and go to their concerts as long as they are around!
Love you New Kids!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not a fan of NKOTB, but I have to point out that they've been getting really good reviews for their con Apparently they put on a good show and have it together.

I've stopped reading these yahoo forums because the writers are trying to troll bait.
Bet this person probably hasnt been to their new show.

144. Upset -
I saw NKOTB in Dallas and they put on a great show! I am glad they came back and their new album is really good.

Idiot... NKOTB is awesome. Always have been, and they still are. And The Cure made some of the best, most inspiring music ever, it would be a crime for them to NOT be touring. :-P~

I am 30 something years old. When I was in high school I remember going to a NKOTB concert. I would love to go to another one of their concerts. It brings back the good days. It keeps me feeling young!

OMG I AM SO GLAD THAT NEW KIDS CAME BACK. THEY HAVE SOLD OUT CONCERTS CONSTANTLY, ARE YOU PPL CRAZY WHO SAY THEY SHOULDNT HAVE CAME BACK.. YES THE SHOULD'VE.... ROCK ON NEW KIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

148. Teresa -
maybe you should go see some shows before you write something like this. NKOTB Rocked thier show! If they would have never been a boy band and just now came out, would you have as much of a problem with them? Probably not. They are great at what they do right now. And aged very well!!!

149. Lorraine -
Most of the bands on your list are better than ever. It also says something about how good NKTOB still is if current performers perform with them. Amos, you are an idiot

i really am happy to see NKOTB is back and still performing. I will keep listening to their music as long as they keep producing it!

152. Biz -
I just saw NKOTB and they still had it! Good looks, in shape, great dancers and sang really well!!! No one says that about Johny Maestro or the Duprees do they???? They still have it too!

I saw NKOTB in concert 2 weeks ago and they are better than they ever were before! They all look great, their dance moves are much improved, their new songs are way hotter than their songs from back in the day... unless you went to a show 15 years ago and have seen them in concert this time around I don't think you're qualified to determine that they shouldn't be doing a comeback tour.

155. Alison -
Speaking as a fan of NKOTB since I was seven, I think they have been able to to pretty well this year considering they are pushing 40. I am sure you are aging dear writer and I would like to see you out on stage singing and dancing the way they do. They have evolved quite well and I am proud to say that I have remained a fan through all these years.

First of all, Motley Crue never went anywhere so they haven't come back. More importantly, The New Kids on the Block are amazing performers. I will have you know that I watched them dance their middle aged butts off for 2 1/2 hours in Dallas last month. They've still got it!

mayb, you should re-write this article...

158. Timothy -
i love NKOTB and glad they came back! there CD was awesome as well as their concert. when you have talent you have talent, to perform, to sing and to dance. and even more after 15 years, and you still got it! of course! why not!

159. smokey -
if these groups sound good let them play.what about the old timers, there still singing.

160. BROOKE -
SOoo I was definitly one of the girls excited to go to the NKOTB concert in Boston !! I think the concert was better now than it was when I seen them as a kid ! Just like the first time an artist makes an appearance they are not liked by Everyone. Everyone has different tastes so apparently who ever wrote this had their head up their ass !!
