Do You REALLY Have to Comeback?

Posted Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:26am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Over the past couple of weeks, we've had the Jackson 5, Led Zeppelin, and Guns 'N Roses all threaten to return with new tours or albums. One of the oldest truisms of rock 'n' roll is this: every band on the way down is a band on the way up. Just as soon as your favorite artist becomes cliché, cheesy, and dated you can be sure they'll return to remind everyone why they mattered in the first place.

Or not.

Frankly, some bands don't ever need to come back (that means you, Asia). Some bands forget what a comeback means (hint: if you leave half the band at home it's not a comeback). The road is littered with bands looking for your comeback vote. It's often a desperate act by groups who should've stayed in the rehearsal hall rather than appearing on a stadium stage. Here's a list of the year's most ill-advised returns. While they're out touring, I'll be at home listening to their albums.

Led Zeppelin

Robert Plant got it right. He agreed to play one gig for the late, great Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records who signed Zep to the label. The gig was a success by all accounts, and Plant went on to tour with Alison Krauss in support of their insanely beautiful roots record, Raising Sand. Meanwhile, the rest of the Zep say they want to keep playing and that they'll find a new singer to fill in for Plant. WHAT? Has anyone told Jimmy and John Paul about that Journey reunion without Steve Perry?

Smashing Pumpkins
Billy Corgan invites the drummer, leaves everyone else at home, and calls it a reunion. Sorry, we call it self-indulgence.

Jackson 5
Does anyone need to see the Jackson sideshow on parade again? Not even Michael has the courage to go through with it.

The Cure
There should be a rule. Dudes over 25 can't wear mascara and lipstick. In the '80s the look was sensitive and cool. Now, it's just creepy.

Mötley Crüe
Their recent Saints of Los Angeles comes nowhere close to their late-'80s alcohol-induced heyday, but I give total props to Mick Mars. Battling a hip replacement and a degenerative spine disease, he's still able to play punishingly loud. That's gotta count for something.

New Kids on the Block
What's worse than a teenaged, bubblegum Boston boy band? A middle-aged, bubblegum Boston boy band. Life is hard enough without this sad display.

whoever wrote this missed the NKOTB concert. They put on a better show, and had more energy from the fans than just about any show I have seen in quite sometime. The sales of their new album are doing great, and they are selling out venues all over the world!!!!!! I have already been to one show and planning on going to atleast one more

Don't knock the block they are little boys anymore and the women still love them. I can only assume that the person that wrote this article is jealous of the bands no matter who they are coming back and actually doing weel. Get over yourself. Some of us wait for the comebacks of our favorite bands whether it is a smash or crap. We look forward to seeing if they have gotten better or if they have really lost the magic.

Whatever...New kids are awesome. If you had seen the show you would not be saying this. love everything about it! And i am still not over it!!!

I was skeptical about embracing NKOTB after 15+ years, but I went to their concert in Cleveland with my friends and LOVED IT! They are better than ever and I love their new CD.

I noticed the EAGLES are not on your list...those are some bad boys....old boys NOW!

I just went to the NKOTB concert in Detroit, and it was so much fun. They were really good. I would definitely go again. It brought back such good memories. Also, they were not all 'bubble gum pop' like it is made out to be. See for yourself :)

I just heard a few of the new songs from NKOTB.. to my amazement i thought they were fabulous!! If they can pull off coming in to the new times.. they will be a hit once again!

You obviously have not been to a recent concert of New Kids On The Block. The concert was great and all of us 30 somethings had a blast. These guys really do have The Right Stuff even after 15 yrs. Love Your San Antonio, Texas Fans!!! Hope they come back for a second tour.

I went to see the New Kids in Tampa, and they were awesome. They have aged, I will give them that, but they still know how to entertain a crowd. As my sister would say to those who doubt them...SUCK IT!!!

I don't care, I'd go see NKOTB again. It's nostalgia, and it was great to see them get back together again. Maybe they'll stay together awhile and maybe not, either way I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

I agree, you are a hater. All of the above mentioned bands defined the era they made it big in, and in their twenties. they went on to solo careers, acting, TV, writing books, or continue to rock. You on the other hand sit at your computer in the dark and write hater articles and wonder why the girls dont like you. When you grow up, you will wish you did with your life worth enjoying and sharing. Nobody is going to hold their breath and hope you make a comeback to writing hater articles 20 years later.

I waited over 20 years to see NKOTB in concert again! I love their new CD. Their concert was a great mix of old and new. From the article, it is obvious that the writer didn't take the time to research any of the bands listed.

All soooooooooooooo true

I saw NKOTB at American Airlines in Dallas and I will have to say they ROCK!!!!! They still have it and are very easy on the eyes. HOT HOT HOT!!!!

I am going to the NKOTB concert tonight and I am so pumped! There is nothing like reliving my 4th-grade dreams. There is a huge group of us girls going who haven't been excited about anything like this since our own weddings I think. I think it's great when bands make comebacks, no matter how cheesy they were in the first place.

Nope, sorry -- I disagree. I was thrilled when New Kids got back together to mark the 20th anniversary of the Hangin' Tough album release. Even now, as a succsssful woman in her 30's and a mother of 5, the mere mention of their names turns me into a squealing 12-year-old. I paid $400 to meet them and go to their show in San Antonio last month and it was worth every penny. These 30-somethings put alot of young entertainers to shame. A brilliantly produced album & tour are nothhing to scoff at.

NKOTB playing to sold out arenas again....sounds like a great comeback to me!!!
